Six decades later, Star Trek may still be the only franchise based on the ideas that diversity is strength, justice is the measure of civilization, bounty is to be shared, peace is worth the price, and all these things can be achieved. We need more shows that look ahead and find goodness.

I actually do take delight in differences & always have. I only discovered I neurodivergent after my children were diagnosed, but I think the gift of being neurodivergent is the appreciation of differences.

Bud we have just crashed the entire nation face first into the paradox of tolerance by normalizing and insufficiently punishing people for the views that the government is about to wholeheartedly embrace come the next administration. I think humanism needs more nuance than "celebrate differences."

Lots of stories have these themes - I think the difference is Star Trek pictures a *society* that embraces them, whereas most have protagonists with these values but who run 'against the current', so to speak.

And I think the only one which didn’t have sounds of explosions in space since sound can’t travel in a vacuum. But I don’t think that the science side of it was the point you were trying to make. 😝

We'll start getting them again once shit starts going to shit and people lose hope. Kinda already a bit of the way there, but its gonna get so much worse in a crazy short amount of time. Dark times tends to produce some amazing escapism art.

it succeeded bc the writers were mature, nuanced, and could weave small messages into stories professionally. also, there was little social pressure to make a woke point in every fucking scene today's writers are scared of online mobs and activist kooks, lack experience, and are ham-fisted buffoons.

Babylon 5 had deep pholosophy but also had ethics of chaos versus order, credit to the sci fi that came before, show continuity, not all aliens are one-dimensional plots, and change is inevitable.

Especially those good values in Star Trek when, sadly, our future & current circumstances seem to use sci-fi dystopian works as training manuals: George Orwell's 1984, The Handmaids' Tale (idk author, sorry) & others to create gut wrenching reality.

The fact that Star Trek is set in the future and in space has always struck me as Gene Roddenberry’s most ingenious subterfuge for addressing all these themes in the zeitgeist of his time.

This just makes me more sad. For me it’s like hearing “the first black [insert]” for anything nowadays. What you mean the first black in the 20th century?

It is showing its age now, with some really awkward casual sexism in the earlier series, but yes on the whole it was ahead of its time and about as forward-looking as liberalism is capable of achieving. More shows with a similar spirit would be welcome.

Star Trek and other space-based TV shows and movies gave us a reason to imagine a future. It’s almost like we are lost without them. They gave us hope, dreams, and inspiration, fostered creativity, taught values and morality, and made us think beyond ourselves.

Star Trek has always given me great hope of a future worth working towards, that humanity will collectively seek betterment and in a Bill and Ted fashion we'll be excellent to each other! It seems that it's a tree I'll never see the shade of and our collective efforts enrich billionaires instead.

Its simple beauty was (and is) celebration of diversity as strength & division as weakness. Simple as a ring. Profound beyond pabulum peddled today as sustenance. This is why no spin-off thus far could do the original justice; same for Twilight Zone. Remove the soul & you get empty cgi.

Check out The Orville if you haven't already. ST:TNG with dick jokes. Critics were harsh but, when it released, it felt more Trek to me than Discovery did. I'm massively immature though so a heavy monologue about morality with a knob gag chaser tickled me immensely 😂

Now we just need a network- studio- producers to buy, produce, present content that promotes trek values…. (*that sound you don’t hear? *crickets*) Until then, this indie writer will keep making content that attempts to hold the torch for Uncle Gene and sharing where I can with like minded folks 📚🪐

There were so many lessons in Star Trek. I loved the one where the one guy had white on the left and black on the right side of his face and the other just the opposite. There was still one claiming superiority.

I wish someone would make a movie based on Kim Stanley Robinson’s “The Minister of the Future”. The end - and its depictions of global cooperation to address climate change - made me cry with hope.

But in the Startrek movies it's usually just about "Good guys" versus "Bad Guys". And the triumph of violence. The good guys win via punch ups and laser battles. Gene Roddenberry (and Lucille Ball) must be rolling in his grave when these flatulent atrocities come round every few years.

All four seasons of Babylon 5 had this aspiration, and it is sad the show never had any spinoffs or sequels. Though B5 took it a bit further, and argued there are some prices that are *too* high to pay for peace.

It’s ironic that in a show with aliens, space travel, laser weapons, and strange planets…the least believable part is the idea that humanity would be so enlightened.

I recently watched DS9 for the first time and even the Bell Riot episode is depressingly optimistic - the police find a Black man and Brown man who don't have ID and seem confused, and give them directions to a centre instead of shooting them on the spot.

Saw a dude on YouTube doing music reaction videos, he's definitely right leaning he played the song America by Niel Diamond and thought it was woke. He's in his 40's. That's where we are today in America.

The Good Place has a lot of these elements, and the penultimate episode was a big part of my healing after being in a hospital as my friend passed, along with his wife and my husband.

I am with both of you there, Picard was a wound to my soul, how they twisted a lot of those characters and how they made a misery of their lives which I always imagined golden and happy after the ending of their own series. And episodic Tv was so much better and you got to know the characters.

That is silly DEI talk. Why on earth would we want that? Just being sarcastic. Will Smith once said “diversity is our superpower”. We lost our way.

It is good escapism from the realities of so much of human society, and commendable. We have many such aspirational models, and yet society remains unbending in many ways. I applaud the aspirations is represents, but I know that we'll never be that.

I think this is exactly it. Science fiction relies on progress in philosophy, arts, economics, and other humanities. We haven't been dreaming of alternatives since the failed experiment of communism... we need an education system that doesn't assume neoliberalism is the best and only way

The "utopia/heaven is boring" criticism exists for good reason. I think IPs like Animal Crossing show it's not necessarily true with some creativity!

My headcanon with every Star Trek culture that's a "planet of hats" is that that's just the image they want to project to outsiders, and the reality of living in their society is more complex and full of compromises.

Why would that be, with more than 2000 years of written history that this declaration “diversity is strength” suddenly become in vogue now rather than any time in the past? Perhaps you could shed some light on why previous civilizations did not say this.

And equally important is the hard cold fact that TV’s first “DEI” of Lucille Ball funded the first series after it was rejected by all the studios and networks 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Just so you know, your local probate court, you can fully have your birth certificate updated to the gender you wish before Trump makes it so you can only be identified by the gender in your BC. Fight back.

Which is a silly thing to do, For instance, if I invented a character, il, call it a humorless spinster catlady and teased them in fiction, it wouldn’t be funny until humorless spinster cat ladies came into being

"The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one." Has been abandoned as a concept of justice in our society. I think all the rest remain our ideals even if we don't practice it well. But that last one is juts fully dropped in favor of throwing the many under the bus for the few.

Well said, Mark! Art isn’t optional—it’s essential. It reflects who we are, challenges what we believe, and inspires who we can become. A society without art is a society without a soul.

We should also start calling Generation X "Generation Star Trek". They were the first to be raised on syndicated episodes of Star Trek, and it impacted the mindset of that whole generation. The fact that they had so little in common with Boomers is why they were given the name 'X' meaning "mystery".

Abrahms turned Star Trek into warhawk, capitalist garbage..he ruined Star Trek..only thing he got right were Kirk ,Spock, Bones, Scottie, and Chekhov. Uhura..I love that she is portrayed strong and intelligent but dating Spock? And not GETTING him? umm why?Spock doesnt "date". He ruined Klingons too.

I'm more star wars but yes, Star Trek is definitely a more inclusive and positive franchise though an argument can be made that the Star Wars universe is just a reflection of our world's diverse relationships warts and all. But I agree it would be better to see a more positive possibility.

Always fascinated by the perfectly integrated community. The Prime Directive was constantly being violated. If the Klingons are helping these people with weapons, do we also supply the other people of this planet with weapons?…we have to…?

This isn't true at all, and is disingenuous to the true message of Star Wars: Evil will never truly win, so long as those with hope in their hearts stand up and fight, and that every day, someone rebels in their own way, just a little. "Entire armies have signed up for the cause without knowing it."

white male supremacist patriarchy while at the same time upholding it has become infuriating. I prefer the O'Donnell-led seasons (which do the same but a little less slavishly) but still enjoy Sorkin's wit (or that of his writers). Have you seen The Diplomat? Show runner is a former WW writer. 2/2

Take with a huge grain of salt, but it sounds like season 4 is potentially confirmed to start filming in early 2025. At least according to a bunch of those random “hollywood rumor” type sites that pop up when searching “Orville Season 4” I really hope they're true :)

I'm surprised everyone in this comment thread missed the biggest point of how humans in Star Trek achieved a better society. Humanity was on the brink of extinction level war. And it was only the intervention of the Vulcans that changed humanity's trajectory (watch - First Contact)

I agree - but to go there, I am convinced that we have to find someone who can incorporate Mahinism into their fictional society. I haven't said anything to the folks behind Star Trek, they don't discuss the underlying economic system all that thoroughly.

There was a "Thiel" type character who got revived in one of the NG episodes. I believe the discussion was based on energy, but details were notable by their absence. That's understandable, the details are difficult. I'd help them use Mahinism and get it right for free.

Your observation, however, is interesting at the level of imagination on the part of authors. Star Wars is a classical collapse into despotism. Almost everything else I see _is_, as you say, describing the worst of human social organization. Unfortunately, I'm no Roddenberry

If star trek were made now, from scratch, some of the same people that love the show now, would be calling it "woke" and hating on it. I don't know what to do about that but I despair for where we may be heading.

Well, that's because it portrays what they don't like - showing the best that can happen when "open minded" is not used as a term to describe tolerance towards hatred but real efforts of working together and giving each others a chance to thrive freely. What to do about it? Stay bright and hopeful.

same people that say they are “red pill” while Matrix is about getting AWAY from societal pressure and living as your true self and it was based on the experiences with society and gender from both directors who are trans women

Modern "woke" stuff is criticized often because the quality suffers due to "wokeness" being the focus. Older Trek had elements sprinkled into it, unlike a lot of modern media where being "woke" is the whole point. I think TNG and DS9 were the golden age and then it all went downhill.

But that's the thing. The 'wokeness' is just part of the story. 'Woke' being the point— it shouldn't be a bad thing. I think it's more due to wanting to pander while also not wanting to be censored, so it's an uncomfortable middle where no one is happy

It was always socially progressive, but I wouldn't call it "woke". When people use "woke" pejoratively, they're usually referring to media that has a sense of being overbearing and preachy. Star Trek tended towards a more subtle approach most of the time.

Many of them were too young to get it when they fell in love. If some people in our time are upset that it's saying good and important things, that means we're pushing in the right direction. We can't choose where we are, but we can do the work.

I personally think the best ones are The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. Both have great characters and storytelling. TNG's first season is a little rough on cheesiness, but it gets REALLY good from season 3 onward.

At times shows like 'Star Trek' and M.A.S.H. were influential as well as stealthy in the way they allowed their viewers to look at their current society 'warts and all' but with the sweetener of fiction/'Sci-Fi' and especially humour to provide a buffer so 'it's not 'us' but what 'We could be'. '

I definitely love Star Trek for displaying a vision of what we could/can be. I am glad you brought up M.A.S.H. I took to that show as a young kid. My parents weren't that deep. I think M.A.S.H. installed more of my social consciousness than they ever did. It taught me to question authority too.

In my opinion, nu-trek’s interpretation of diversity and inclusion is very boring and flat compared to the older series. It flaunts but stops at “girl boss energy” and “black empowerment”. There is no other story, no underlying thought or philosophy. All that’s left is “woke”. And I’m not a fan.

Being deeply conservative requires a degree of media illiteracy. The majority of media and art is progressive to some degree. Always has been.

Star Trek was never woke. It was situational. It examined specific instances of injustice and addressed them within the confines of a single episode. The only show with an arc was ds9. Nostalgia has colored peoples perceptions. Spock would be vilified today.
