Yes, 2025 isn't looking like it will be a great year. Right wing authoritarianism is rising. Global warming continues unabated. The world is as fractured as ever. But at least we can count on one positive thing: it is the Year of Linux Desktop.

it has been the year of linux desktop here for decades. i have a linux desktop since slackware, and i think wgs linux, and other ones. man they were hard to get going, and you had to manually configure x which was brutal. once they were working with your monitor, they were actually fine as i recall

Kinda works is definitely how I’d describe it though I think the less specialized stuff you need the better it works, but a lot of hyperniche stuff simply only exists for windows

Same here, and the "Linux desktop" in 1995 was not for the easily intimidated. Change screen resolution was done by hand editing a big text file with sync codes. The jokes are about the 1995 Linux desktop.

Unironically this is the year I’m ditching Windows as my daily driver in favour of Pop!_OS. I’m in the process of cancelling a lot of my SaaS and looking for FOSS alternatives. I woke up and realised I’m now dreading every Windows update, yet looking forward to every Pop!_OS / Cosmic update.

FWIW, climate change isn't exactly "unabated." Yeah, we still haven't managed to stop the process completely, but for the past few years, we've consistently been in a better place than predicted, so we have succeeded in slowing it. A small victory, but worth celebrating.

Been hearing that one for ages. Won't happen unless Winblows implodes. Linux's diversity and the fact that it doesn't work well on some desktop hardware is at fault. Sometimes too many choices makes it difficult to pick a distributor. In the end its what works for you.

Yes, but in good news, none of this is real. This isn’t happening. Think about it. It’s incredibly stupid. RFK Jr is in charge of health stuff, Donald Trump is president, again, Elon Musk is now… whatever he is. Or would be, if this was real and actually happening. Which it clearly isn’t.

I believe 2025 will be the year of the decentralized social network. BlueSky being chief among them. Mastodon helped start the journey. Pixelfed will be the Insta alternative, Loops for TikTok replacement.

Comrade, for 30 years you have walked the righteous path of Linux—a true revolutionary of the desktop! And now look around: from Android to Chrome OS, Kindle to reMarkable, Linux is the invisible hand behind the world’s most-used systems!

It powers not only our devices but the web servers and routers that keep this digital age alive. Meanwhile, Apfel and Muckbrosoft cling to their bloated empires—monuments to exploitation—but the free kernel prevails!
