These guys’ lives center around wielding power in all the awful ways that people with unchecked authority have always lorded over other people, and their ideologies center around letting them pretend that this time is somehow different and virtuous

I'm quite sure there are those working in that field that wouldn't get involved in a sex cult due to their religious beliefs alone (not necessarily christian). Because that's what actual diversity looks like.

Holy yikes But also I'm pretty sure I *can* in fact come up with some reasons why heavy LSD use by top officials in companies that are embedding themselves ever-deeper in the government/military contracting world is bad

I always hated the “move fast and break things” philosophy because it’s a bad enough philosophy for software development; but also I *knew* the people spousing it were always looking for ways to apply it IRL too. Scary times.

I was talking to someone and said this reminds me of the cocaine-snorting bankers of the pre-2008 crash. Different rich guys, different drugs, same trajectory of catastrophe.

Just had to Google CNC and it explains so much about AI and consent especially combined when with drugs. It's all a recipe for abuse and boundary crossing.

I don’t think it does critics of that circle any favors to call it a “sex cult.“ Whether us boring, monogamous vanilla normies want to believe it or not, there are a lot of people who participate in polyamory, sex parties, etc. Calling it a cult as a result just costs people credibility.

It isn’t a cult because of the sex. It’s a sex cult because of the sex. It’s a cult because of the intellectual incest, control, insular use of language, etc.

it’s a sex cult because of the way it acts like a sex cult. I know lots of people who have group sex and are in polycules who are perfectly normal and cool. That is not what is happening here for a bunch of reasons, chief among them “huge amounts of money and power are involved.”

you stop being able to play the “we are but a smol bean polycule like anybody else in a coastal city” card when billions of dollars and vast power are involved

If you ask basically anyone "Does vast wealth and unchecked power drive people completely insane?" most would just intuitively say yes. Right up until they are confronted with examples of that exact thing.

Yeah, see, I don’t see the mere correlation of money and non-vanilla sex automatically making it a cult. That would make any random M&A attorneys having a three way into a cult. That’s just silly. If the sex is somehow part of a power hierarchy, then fine, but I haven’t seen that suggested.

Honestly "cult" is probably generously downplaying the horror of an industry that has normalized the idea of boundary eroding sex parties attended by all the people who have control over your professional & financial future. 🤷🏻‍♀️

what do you think about the networks of businesses and non-profits where church attendance is essential to career advancement? where people who prefer not to attend church, or that particular church, get excluded from key discussions? because that's what this is, only for sex parties

Yes, and, just because they're fucking doesn't *make* them Scientology. And if they're a cult (which I'd tend to agree with based on their weird quasi-religious beliefs about AI and the End Times) that doesn't make them a *sex cult.* Eyes Wide Shut was a sex cult because the whole thing centered

If there’s coercion and abuse to the sex, then I would agree with you (and I said that before, to the self-righteous preening monkey who decided to turn a polite conversation into a poop throwing match by being intentionally condescending). And I never said there wasn’t; just that I hadn’t seen it.

But you are replying to a post that started with a woman’s account of the coercive nature of certain environments and saying, because you haven’t personally seen it, the behavior she’s talking about shouldn’t be stigmatized?

I was unsure whether I'd mixed up aella talking about taking LSD every day for (possibly) years. I guess it must have been true. No judgement on anyone's drug use as long as they aren't hurting others. I'm not well read on LSD, do you gain tolerance to it? What does it do to the brain?

You gain a ton of tolerance to LSD rather quickly. It's notable, though short lived-- if you take one hit a day for two days, even a 10 strip won't get you there by day 3. If you wait 5 days, you're basically back to where you were (The reason why is cool but kind of a long story).

Yeah, I started researching the mechanism after a week long festival in my 20s... (For the sake of science: I also discovered that MDMA has some crossover tolerance, but not complete. Mushrooms even moreso). Basically these drugs make us trip on what we've already got in our head.

Point being, if she was actually taking it every day, she wasn't feeling anything from it pretty quickly. Even microdosing regimens have you taking it every 3rd day or similar.

Ah, thank you. So someone saying they took it every day for an extended period of time should be considered with skepticism?

I mean, they *could*. But it would stop doing much. Basically, the neurotransmitters that get dumped haven't had a time to replenish.

But I also think people are focusing way to much on the group sex and not enough on the "coersive climate that normalizes recklessness and crossing boundaries." The former just spreads herpes, chlamydia, and yeast infections. The latter promotes fascism and could wreck civilization.

I mean, it doesn't seem to be hippie free love, if it's "consensual non-consensual" that just means they're really into non-consensual and no wonder they also promote fascism...

I have no idea what "consensual non-consensual" is supposed means, unless it's some variation on BDSM. I assume it's more than just simple sexual assault and/or rape. But maybe it is just a euphemism. The freaks are certainly capable of it.

it's mostly pre-arranged to some degree, and has some level of safewords. So pretty rough sex, often some level of violence, but with (if done properly/safely) agreed-upon limits and boundaries and the ability to go "nope, stop". For "violent non-violent", think, like, backyard wrestling or similar

I personally don't care whether people have weird sex parties, but if the Venn diagram of your sex partners and coworkers is a circle, I don't think you have a healthy work environment OR personal life.

True but I fear being disinterested in other people's weird sex risks turning a blind eye to a lot of abusive behaviours. Outside the weirdness it is not enough for these activities to be consensual, they must be meaningfully so as employees, minors, the drugged etc cannot freely consent.
