UGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Ah but it does make the hardware to play this game less attainable, which I haven't thought about but must assume is good

See it less as a tool to help them save money and optimize and more of a tool that helps them control and de-value human labor, which is much more important than money.

I've definitely worked at companies that invested in new tech or programs and forced us to use it only to discover it doesn't really help. But yeah, the different here is that they are asking people to work with something that the company hopes will actually replace said people.

Company uses ai, endup losing fans support and profit. Different company sees this, uses ai, endup losing fans support and profit. Different company sees this, uses ai, endup losing fans support and profit. Different company sees this, uses ai, endup losing fans support and profit.

Too bad they can't get AI to buy the damn thing then because their core target audience sure as shit won't.

Same story for every studio that tries to get away with using slop and then gets push back. RIP crazy taxi, games dead to me already. Unfortunate

Shareholders will keep asking devs to use these in their pipelines whether they want to or not in order to appear cutting-edge and honestly, there’s only one language these folks understand so that they stop. The big red profit line

Unfortunately, expect this to be the norm for the majority og games released. It was heavily pushed by leadership across a variety of companies. Best bet will be the indie space for non-AI games and even that is going to be hard.

How can you make a game about driving around really fast in a taxi while that one song by The Offspring plays on a loop unappealing?

background assets like billboards and stuff? why? that's the best place to put in-jokes, references, easter eggs and shit. that's a great place to be creative. why would you export the silliest, most low-stakes part of the process to the robot brain given the reaction this invariably gets

If the higher ups really didn't want to pay people to make them then like outsource some billboard designs to the public or something. Yeah it's not the greatest option but I guarantee there's enough people who would participate in a competition or something for free. It's better than ai at least.

SEGA loves money and hasn't really cared about creativity in several decades, it's a shame. And even though AI doesn't save money, they'll still use it. It's a fallacy.

Because the developers don't need to use everything the AI gives them? They can modify it by adding a joke in themselves, or scrap it to use as influence to make something from hand?

The argument of using AI for temporary assets during development is also moot, because there's, what, hundreds of free resources on the internet? It literally costs nothing and does not poison the planet

RIP, crazy taxi. they just had to insert stolen material to make it an unethical purchase. Oh well, there wasn't a new title for ten thousand years so I don't think anybody was still holding out hope for a new crazy taxi anyway.

I think there's a typo in your post. I'm pretty sure they meant to say "Generative AI was used to REPLACE our teams during the development of background assets for Crazy Taxi: World Tour."

You lied to us, SEGA! You told us you'd never use AI for game development, Let alone Generative AI! How could you use AI to Generate the game content!? I looked up to you SEGA, since 1991. I thought you were there for everyone! But now, you're no different from other video game companies.

I am extremely disappointed. I don't see you the same anymore. I don't know if I can buy any new games from you anymore. Not with the thought that any new game you make also used AI. I can't. I cannot support it. This hurts, SEGA. I thought you were the cool guys. But not anymore. Piss off, SEGA.

This is a bit of murky situation. Ultimately if there just used as place holder assests and the full game has only fully human made assets, I dont see a problem. It might be beacuse im a bit tired of looking for any reason to instantly hate any new thing and tired of modern game discorce.

I dont like ai either, im definitely growing more and more against it. That being said, there are a few limited use cases that are not bad. Being used as placeholders that get replaced with real human art seems to be a fair balnce.

The thing is, that's bad, too. The point of placeholders is that they stick out; they remind you that you have to replace them eventually. Having "placeholders" that look similar to finished art leads to you forgetting they're there, and then they end up in the final product, a la Clair Obscur.

I was stoked for the latest Hot Shots Golf until I saw they used gen AI. Looks like this Crazy Taxi is going in the same category of "Shame, I would've bought that."

It really feels like we shouldn't even be having to talk about this, why this game of all things, you'd think some shitty mobile spin-off of a series they constantly make sequels to would do it, why now for something I was most excited for, I hate you Sega, get blood poisoning

I don't care in whichever fraction of the process you used AI @sega.jp The only correct amount of generative AI is none whatsoever. You use AI, I'm not buying your game, no matter how fantastic it is, I have a backlog big enough to last me a lifetime.

I'd like to believe SEGA really didn't want to make a new crazy taxi but had to cause of shareholders and their fans wouldn't shut up so they made this one with AI to make sure to kill it's reputation among fans so they'd never ask for a new crazy taxi again it's the perfect IP murder

Sega has just shot themselves in the foot with a shotgun slug. The biggest concern here is that they either didn't even notice they did it, or didn't care and will just shrug, saying "We didn't need that foot anyway."

It would be tragic but also kind of amusing if what kills Sonic is not a sequel to 06 but Sega becoming AI slop, the franchise that survived every single tragedy dies cause "AI is the future"

At least they're honest. If GenAI was such a small part of the process, why use it at all? I mean I'd rather they not use it at all to begin with, but they clearly didn't NEED to when they have so many talented people. I want to support Crazy Taxi, but give them an inch and they'll take a mile...

Same. It's an old favorite that I would have supported. But I'll never give a penny to anyone or anything that uses Bot Slop in even the most minute amount.

Hey if you're tired of stepping on this rake, maybe don't put it down on the lawn. Like the easiest way to avoid this shit is to... idk, not touch it in the first place. You can't step on a rake that isn't there.
