WILL COCAINE MAKE COLLEGE OBSOLETE?

Jeff (Hot Type) Jarvis@jeffjarvis.bsky.social

WTF, NYer. "If we agree that college primarily serves a credentialling process that stamps select young people as worthy of work..." We do not. So much for the bastion of erudite journalism. This is sensationalism, damaging our most vital institution: education. www.newyorker.com/news/fault-l...

One of the very funny things about this is that they are accidentally almost walking themselves into a Marxist critique of western education as class reproduction

Good God. My son is a junior in college and depressed as hell over AI without these dipshits making it worse. What is college for? They clearly don't know and AI wasn't even available when they went.

There is a disconnect among younger folks between completing a task and having a task completed that I don't think people quite realize. As in: they don't fully grasp that there is a purpose for any task that they do not want to do.

The fact that someone wrote this sentence: "If we agree that college primarily serves a credentialing process that stamps select young people as worthy of work..." And thought it was good to publish let alone say out loud proves we can't make all humans self-aware, let alone a computer.

What UC students say about using cocaine — and whether it’s cheating bsky.app/profile/sfch...

Knew a professor that felt he needed to fill his reporting 201 classroom with ringing phones, endless birthday cakes, and other interruptions ot make the room feel like a newsroom. Infusing USC Film School with cocaine would have the same effect.

Love the "stamp" of approval bit. Yes, that's all the degree is. Nothing to do with education levels or standards, accreditation, etc. If any student has a teacher that suggests they're just there for a stamp or are jumping through hoops, I suggest they go elsewhere for a teacher that does care.

No matter how you feel about cocaine, its use is growing more widespread and it's important that educators understand how they could integrate it as a tool in their classrooms.

Makes me ashamed to have a subscription. The purpose of college is to create knowledge. It is a system that sorts through the chaff of the average to find the wheat that is capable of creating new knowledge. The credentialing is a method to draw the chaff in so it can be sorted through.
