Not about anything in specific but I think we gotta be really careful about not conflating the concept of "enshittification" with the impulse to assume that everything was always better during your adolescence

Remember the good old days when everything was free, because my parents bought it

Millennials in general seem to be hitting the nostalgia phase of their lives. It is kind of wild watching people on here pine for their blackberry and a simpler web. All of which happens to coincide with their youth.

Enshittification used to mean "a website you like is adding ads and obnoxious features that noone likes" but now it just means "thing i liked has become worse". It's a common phenomenon called Semantic Drift and you can watch it happen whenever a community word enters the mainstream

enshittification and nostalgia usually accompany each other in the same conversations i think due to a matter of perspective. both the present and past have good and bad things about them. time has just made you forget the bad ones and the more recent ones are still fresh so it feels worse.

enshittification and stuff like planned obsolescence have been around since at least the 1920s. it was just harder to do before the internet and a boom in population made ripping people off easier to get away with and therefore more common

it reminds me of the "games used to be better back in the day" narrative. in the past a lot of games were terrible because they were still learning what was good and what was bad game design. sometimes experimenting results in shit.

ironically nowadays the "shitty" games are that way because mainstream never wants to go outside the safe zone of what works. there also wasnt as much to choose from in the past and it was more of a niche hobby, so the good titles that did exist were known by everyone

Yeah, I’ve also seen people casually throwing around the term “slop.” I know that word obviously existed before (unlike enshittification), but something you don’t like is probably not slop. AI is slop.

The movies that I've heard people claim are "better than anything being made today," man. Get a grip! Get some perspective! Enshittification was coined to be about websites getting less usable, not you liking the media from when you were 13.

I feel the same way whenever someone uses “slop” to describe something they don’t like. It’s a surprisingly effective word to describe something cheap and mass produced designed to be consumed without thought or input! It’s not just a random pejorative!

I mean older movies are better lit and have better costume design, but it's because gaffers and costumers are in the union and cgi workers are not. More of a labor rights thing.

Enshittification isn't about art, it's about useable items & everyday consumables (food, clothes, tech, furniture, UI, etc). Art being more commercialized/sanded down for mass appeal is an entirely different issue (tho they are done for the same reason: money).

People need to understand they are not immune to nostalgia. Time moves and people reminisce on the past removed from all the faults and issues cause they eroded away in the sands of time.

And it means a very specific way of doing that, to boot! It's just not just "thing got shitty"! Such enshittification of neologisms…

Any time someone claims that current movies/music/games/etc are bad, what I hear is that they haven't spent much time looking at anything that doesn't have a multi-million dollar ad campaign behind it. There's so much great stuff coming out, you just have to look for it!

I get that it takes effort to find the things you like, and as you get older you have less time and energy to do so. And there's more to wade through now than ever. But that doesn't mean there's nothing to find.

when it comes to live service games i feel like it could make more sense, but the only part thats worse nowadays is how little people complain about microtransactions

Social media is largely just people gassing up whatever was happening during their formative years

The current state of Instagram is seeing a post that says “They DON’T make movies like this anymore” and it’s a scene from the most mediocre film of 2018

Right. There's enshittification, but some of the things that were better during my adolescence are unrelated to that. Yet both are worth learning from. Resist centralization of power. Take Control.

Here is my bad take… There is a K-shaped enshittification going on. Certain experiences and quality offerings are getting objectively worse and cheaper. While the technology, and expertise those experiences “ride on” have gotten so much better. I think that’s the devil’s bargain of capitalism. 🤷‍♀️

UI is one of the weirdest examples. I often think that UI gets worse redesigns but other times I think it's just me being stubborn to something being different

It's a very easy temptation to give into the survivorship bias and just rant about how everything was better in the past. Heck, to be honest I feel better when I remind myself that bad things existed even when I was little. The present ain't special

I think the battle for "enshittification" has already been lost. To most people it already means "product is bad" rather than the specific process Doctorow coined it to describe

Yeah and I think that's not a huge deal, but it bugs me when people use it to sound like they're doing socially aware commentary on a basically reactionary impulse.

enshittification does not mean "thing getting worse", it's a specific process where capitalists try to extract profit out of something at the cost of making it worse for the end user, after said thing reaches a certain threshold of users it's silly to use the term generally for thing getting worse
