Ezra Klein and Jon Stewart over-simplify and caricature the restrictions on this $42.5 billion broadband grant program to falsely paint the whole thing as an irredeemable waste. But they fail to mention a lot of important stuff because they didn't actually understand what they were talking about...

They were talking mainly about the amount of time the overlapping processes take. Yes, there were clearly reasons for safeguards - but (for example) the broadband map process could have been running in parallel, not sequentially as a later part of the application process…

My kingdom for "smart liberals" who have any other move beside attacking liberalism and other liberals. This move have been beaten to DEATH For three decades where Democrats have been sub-competitive. It's a horrifically failed approach to politics. And I wish people would stop listening to it

Not that I think its what you're saying, but people need to realize that it is possible to criticize things without being sensational like this. Maybe don't freak the fuck out because someone tried to prevent graft and might have come out too rigorous. Optimal regulating is a small moving target.

Oh I totally understand what you're saying and I agree. If we're going to be the pro-government party, We do need to be nimble when things fail and correct them However, What Klein and others do is say "all X failures stem from liberalism itself" How is that different from being a conservative?

Fundamentally, I think that a strong argument can be made that the complexity of our regulatory state comes from 2 places: Capitalism and our chosen form of regulation. We use lawsuits and incentives in lieu of real regulation because we hate telling businesses what to do directly.

I think there’s a certain sociopathy required for the relentless self promotion & production to be a working pundit in this media age. And these characteristics are the opposite of what’s found in a great thinker.

I don't understand why liberals don't get this. The government is all about delivering tangible results that are felt by most. Your average person does not care about the process, they just want to see the government deliver.

Ezra/Derek pointed out that excessive bureaucracy is a problem but not the only problem. You can disagree on the specifics but their overall point still stands. America does not build things fast enough. The party that believes in the government should want the government to deliver results faster.

(BEAD) has many of these restrictions because they were trying to avoid all the fraud, scandals, and problems in an earlier FCC program mismanaged by Trump (RDOF), where ISPs (and elon musk) took tons of taxpayer money for deployments they couldn't finish (Klein doesn't mention this)

techdirt.comThe Trump FCC Wasted Millions In Broadband Subsidies In A Giant Mess Government Is Still Trying To Clean UpSo a few weeks ago Trump FCC boss Ajit Pai came out of hiding to issue a dumb blog post about how killing net neutrality must not have been a bad idea because the internet still works. In his post,…

it also...took extra time because states and feds basically had to completely remap broadband access because our broadband maps, for decades, have been shit. You don't want to throw $42.5 billion in taxpayer dollars at a problem you haven't measured accurately. That would be...bad.

Klein is also so busy trying to paint BEAD as a useless boondoggle), he fails to mention a bill from that same year (ARPA) was a huge success, driving $25 billion in fiber everywhere you probably didn't know this because dem messaging sucks and the press doesn't care about infrastructure

techdirt.comARPA Is Quietly Funding Cheap ($50-$65 A Month) Community-Owned Gigabit Fiber Access To Long Neglected NeighborhoodsThe 2021 American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) continues to quietly help fund a number of extremely popular community-owned, open access fiber deployments that are challenging entrenched U.S. monopoly po…

Anyway, Klein and Stewart's portrayal of BEAD as a COMPLETELY worthless boondoggle was quickly picked up by right wing media, which has been trying to make this same case for years in part because they want to redirect the money to elon musk. So nice job there, I guess.

isn't this incompatible with the explanation that nothing could be done until there had been more mapping? this fiber rollout clearly could be done without an extensive survey first, no? it did get done and they didn't wait for such a survey.

"D messaging sucks" is just Green Laterning as far as I can tell. There's no magic rhetoric that will make the press report what the Ds say and follow up on the facts. No amount of willpower could make the electorate pay attention to or believe the truth about the Rs.

Worst part is I'm sure someone would retort this by saying "well, force the ISPs to share their internal data" but having seen some of the internal datasets, they were probably just as outdated.

Klein is an idiot who despite having a wonkish reputation clearly has never had to deal with policy implementation beyond the high level goals. Easy to describe the details as red tape if you've never bothered to get into details.

This!! E.g. in my town there were several areas that showed up on maps as being served by broadband where locals know for a fact there is no actual service!! Very frustrating

he didn't research deeply enough to understand why this program has these restrictions, or that other broadband subsidy programs from the same year were successful, or that the program is currently being hijacked by the GOP to pad Elon Musk's wallet (which he just..doesn't mention?)

As a Philly guy, I was proud to see the destroyed part of I95 rebuilt in 12 days. Great ideas must be measured by outcomes. The $42B broadband funding was a GREAT idea... that's nowhere near completion. It wasn't a "useless boondoggle", but it is despiriting. Dems need more GSDers! #getshitdone

You sound like you know what you’re talking about on this issue. But are Ezra and Derek wrong in general? Why does every other developed country build high-speed rail and we just can’t? Why can’t California build enough housing? Why does a mile of subway cost 5x in NYC what it costs in Barcelona?

I can speak to telecom since I've covered it for two decades and yes, our state and federal governance is significantly more corrupt. Worse than Europe. shitty monopolies like AT&T and Comcast literally directly write.self serving legislation in most U.S. states

It drives me nuts when people go off the deep end over things they don't understand. I know nothing about nuclear physics, so I defer to experts. It's not hard to acknowledge your own ignorance.

This book makes sense if you consider that they likely wrote it with the expectation that Biden or Harris would win. In that context, it's a rebranding of neoliberalism and Clinton's third way. Trump/Musk winning changes everything, but books don't sell themselves I guess.

The whole point is that being anti-Trump isn’t enough; you have to actually do visceral things for people when they vote you in. You can’t just say “I won’t do X” because they’ll just paint it as a smear and do it anyway. Tell voters what you’ll do and do it.

stewart is not a great political mind, he's a hack comedienne, and not a really funny one any more, think bill maher, and Klein is a wolf in sheep's clothing, one that is very concerned with his clothing, little substance just wants to appear smart, imho

I feel like complaining about a program like this when the military exists and has planes that don’t even fly half the time or tanks they don’t even want is also weird. As you said that program isn’t even badly handled.

as far as waste goes it's probably pretty far down the list but ranting about military entitlements won't sell books to right wingers, so

Of goddamn course the "sensible wonks" had to find some angle to shit on BEAD. We finally had rolling FTTH deployment across the US and it's going to be talked as a boondoggle rather than valuable infra deployment by people who have no clue what a DSLAM or CMTS is.

I'm happy to see them getting an appropriate amount of criticism though. I was getting pretty tired of Stewart being treated like this messiah for liberalism. He shouldn't run for president and to his credit, he doesn't want to.

Yes. If you're really curious, the interview with the Pod Saves guys is better than this. The point is, if you pass a bunch of great stuff, like the CHIPS act, rural broadband, etc; and nothing much happens before the next election, you can't run on it, and the other side can undo it if you lose.

Don’t you think part of the problem though is that they try to plan everything out perfectly instead of just doing something and committing to fixing those mistakes? Like no matter what you do you always run into unforeseen issues on a project.

No because ARPA drove $25 billion in broadband subsidies and was launched the same year, they just ignore the example because it doesn't support his book thesis that Democrats are in love with bureaucracy for bureaucracy's sake

Absolutely! But there's context beyond "Dems just like bureaucracy for bureaucracy's sake" they could have included with like 5 minutes of research. There are some decent reasons this program had more restrictions. And other programs from that same year (ARPA) have been successes.

I used to listen to Ezra, since my understandinging of U S politics is limited and i prefer to hear from experts. Every now and then he touched upon areas I DO know about and while not always appalling, the coverage wasn't of a quality that filled me with huge hope for the value of everything lse.

Interesting, isn’t his argument though that outcomes of the bills are failures or dont make a difference? We spend all the effort in getting bills passed and then it loses the fights in implementing the bills quickly so that it makes a difference within 4 years?

Jon is such a disappointment, lucky cut-rate comedian gifted with top-tier writers uses his giant platform to chase Republican media frames, sad boomer vibes, go back top your rescue animals or whatever

I figured it also was a overcorrection from Obama era ‘connect America’ plan funding that my local ISP accepted then did absolutely nothing with to expand access in the area. Three years from enacting to funding seems like a lot but quickly getting funding out with not plan isn’t efficiency.

Thanks for this thread; one complaint I always make about shit like this that I maybe missed you making or was just implicit in your thread—this is the fucked up, wasteful system that lobbying and corporate interests want! It’s how they hobble and poison regulation!

yes! a lot of this stuff isn't bureaucratic for bureaucracy's sake. Corporatism and corruption built most of this! Accurately identify the target you're angry with.

My ur example of this the 90s era assault weapons ban. The gun industry and NRA watered it down so hard, made it a stupid, convoluted nightmare, and even despite all that it was still effective! But the knock was always how dumb and ineffective it was…

As though it represented some pure liberal dream of how firearms regulations should work and wasn’t cut off at the knees every which fucking way by lobbying and both reps and dems as it wound its way through congress

Similar to Obamacare being so fucking watered down and then a bunch of dipshits insist it didn’t work or wasn’t good as though it demonstrates the failure of ideology when it’s really a process failure. Fuck! Angry just thinking about it!

This thread is an excellent summary of everything catastrophically wrong with our mainstream media landscape. Not remotely enough knowledge but *lots* of loud, overly confident opinions.

I have a feeling you are right about the IRA program...but do you have a source that simplifies explaining the process for obtaining the funds that will make sense to those of us who are less knowledgeable? Government works slowly, destruction is easy and fast (as we are discovering).

Tried listening to an interview with Klein and his coauthor and their entire argument seems unprovable, like you can’t A/B test legislation to prove that including certain requirements has a negative impact on outcomes (also omnibus bills exist because Congress can’t pass more than a single bill)

Iam involved in planning infrastructure in germany. We have similiar timelines. I do believe some of it could be condensed and shortened, but its important to take everyone on board. These timelines dont come from friviously waiting, its to give citizens time to give input.

the program they built was far from perfect, but there are legitimate reasons some of this stuff took so long. They had to completely remap the entirety of U.S. broadband access. And coordinate across 50 different states.

Wait, you mean to tell me that Ezra Klein and Jon Stewart didn't understand something and instead wallowed in faux outrage so they could seem smart and cool? A truly new development in their careers and one never seen before.

Not really helping! I'm aware of Jon Stewart from The Daily Show about 20 years ago. But what's this? Are they criticising a Biden initiative? Or meta-pretending to criticise it? Or what? (As I say, I can't watch it over here.)

Despite being introduced in 2021 with a $42.5 billion allocation, NO BEAD-funded broadband networks have been built as of early 2025. NONE!!! That’s what the conversation was about. NOTHING has been built. Klein is not wrong that there is unnecessary red tape.

I don’t know the details of the funding, but about 10 days ago in my rural area I was able to switch from DSL to fiber broadband. I’m certain a lot of government money made that possible. Thanks, Joe.

With today’s report of 256,000 new jobs in December, 16.6 million jobs over the course of my administration and this is the only administration in history to have created jobs every single month inherited the worst economic crisis in decades with unemployment above 6% (A)

We didn’t finish reconstruction. Maybe the biggest failure in the history of American liberal governance. Failure of liberal govt leading to fascism. Hmmm. I feel like someone just wrote a book about that.

People need to keep journos/opinionistas like Ezra and Kara at arms length. (KS platformed EM too) It's common sense to stay open to good ideas/reporting, but when you see thru the shiny wrapper of corp appeasement & drift-right BS, it's alarm bell time. Time to be called out for their hat tricks.

Jon Stewart is nothing short of a massive fucking disappointment and honestly I wish he’d just shut the fuck up. He’s done about the same for tRump as John cusack has.

Talk about missing the point… you’ve managed to completely straw man their argument. You admit that it had real problems; that’s what they were talking about! They admit there were successes, they’re just saying they were too few and far between.

Corporate Dems are working overtime to pull the rug out from under growth happening in the progressive wing of the party by offering up b.s. hot takes to the right. These people are scrambling to gain control over the next iteration of the Democratic party.

I... I can't.... I can't imagine the brain that wants to talk about problems with the Biden admin (even if it was true which its not) NOW! now! at this moment? mid stupid fascism speed run, you have time to smugly go "lol Biden, that idiot loser" like what the fuck?

Stewart is an opportunist prick who has been moving to the right consistently to preserve his profit potential. He helped Trump get elected by attacking Biden repeatedly after he won the nomination fairly. He wants to be seen a centrist because that's how Rogan made $Millions. He's out for himself.

Been trying to tell people he's a shill for a couple years, only recently have people been willing to see it. Like flowers at a funeral. As George Carlin put it: "You get more flowers when you die than you ever got at all. They all arrive at once - too late."
