There is no reason other than public spectacle to choose to die in agony, or maybe survive with serious injury, rather than more tried and true methods like pills and alcohol.

He then turned the pump inside the car and soaked the interior with gasoline. He got in and somehow pulled a disrance away from the pumps. He lit a cigarette and incinerated himself and the car. His death wasn't instant. An act like this isn't done on a whim. What happened here defies credibility.
