Agreed. The military can provide opportunity not otherwise available to so many. TACO has forced so may soldiers out, because he does not understand the commitment they undertook and he does not think about the cost our government paid to train them.

It's so embarrassing for the soldiers, as if they had messed something up and now have to write a penalty letter 1000 times "I have sworn to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States" or pick up litter in parks. I would prefer the first alternative.

Absolutely. But I think we're at the point where we need to start saying that they should be refusing orders (I don't mean the trash pickup is the final straw--just that it's extremely obvious they are being used illegally). They must know their orders will only get worse from here...

Had a teacher in HS who was a retired semi-high-ranking army officer, & if/when you got detention for being late 3x, he had you spend an hour counting the dimples on golf balls by dotting them with a sharpie. "You waste my time, I'll waste yours." I always liked him. I did NOT like counting dimples.

SSG: "Hey Smith, you got slated for a working party in the park." Smith: "Working party? Out here?! At this time, during this event, localized in an active threat zone for us, SSG?!" SSG: "Yeah, you pick up trash with a vest on, it'll be hot & early so bring your Camelbak." Smith: "Fuck dude..."

On a Colonel's salary maybe. The average guard soldier makes closer to $130/ day. Their benefits are nice though (military essentially has socialized medicine,) and since they are activated they also get a living stipend and their lodging covered.

They don't even have grabbers or spikes? Something very surreal and vicariously embarrassing about watching military personnel bending all the way over, crouching down to pick up trash with their hands

I mean, it would still be surreal and vicariously embarrassing if they had grabbers or spikes. But at the very least they would be appropriately equipped for this task

This is a lot more telling than we realize. This is showing us the national guards have nothing better to do. Whether DC is overloaded with National Guards or there’s no crime to fight or a bit of both, this shows the occupation of DC is complete and utter 🐂💩

Exactly. This is busywork. I remember my first summer job.... when they ran out of real work for me this is the kind of thing I was told to do. I can't imagine how embarrassing it is for trained soldiers to hear that they are on trash detail.

When I was in the army, this was known as "policing the area." I'm sure this isn't what Orange Julius Caesar had in mind when he sent the military in to police DC. He could have waited until the next Earth Day, and volunteers would have done this for free.

I say Bravo! Trump wants troops to threaten and terrorize civilians. Instead the National Guard leaders have troops perform a useful and benign public service. Still a major waste of money and inconvenience to troop members (I doubt they want to be there), but something positive at least.

Not really very useful.

The funniest thing about this is DC is actually a very clean city. (For a number of reasons--try strolling into the Metro with food of any kind in hand.) They're not even doing anything *useful* here since any garbage laying around would be sparse at best.

Their bosses back home have to be seething at this activation for no reason. Very disrespectful to the guardsman's private lives and employers May as well have just told their families their deployment was to participate in a reality show.

Meanwhile, at your full time job, your coworkers are picking up the slack and busting their butts for the president's non emergency, causing delays for clients/patients in some cases. And your family may be struggling with child care or other matters for it.

At a cost of 1.1 million per day. Not a great use of taxpayer’s money, in my humble opinion! But let’s cut out lunches for kids and medical coverage for the aged! America, why are you allowing this fuckwad to ruin your country. We the people; DO SOMETHING!!

part of me hopes this is a sort of 'malicious compliance'? seems like a very paradoxical presentation that almost seems intentional? also kinda wonder why it was the NG itself that put out the video. are they sending some subtle hints too?

Everyone calm down. Soldiers pick up trash as part of the duty day. It’s actually called a “police call”. The irony is not intentional. Camo and high-vis vests are normal everyday life in the military. Get grip.

So fun fact. Even if they weren't doing this and sitting in their bunks *they would still be paid the same amount* sooooooo them being put to something is actually worth taxpayer money.

Inmates, in the other hand, sit on the bunk beds or in a yard. I don’t know where you live, but in California we see inmates picking up trash along the highway and others train in fire prevention work or are actual fire fighters. Taxpayers pay for their work, but generally, it’t not much.

National Guard men and women have regular jobs and live in their own homes, except for some weekends for training or their basic training. They are activated, generally, to protect their communities…natural disasters, threats or actual violence, etc.

Such as the usual, primarily engaged in inactive duty training (IDT), which includes regularly scheduled unit training periods, additional training periods, and equivalent training to maintain their military readiness and proficiency? You know, in readiness to actually protect the Nation.

If they are picking up garbage in DC, they might as well make a stop at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue; there's a fat piece of garbage in the Oval Office they should pickup and throw away on behalf of the American people ...

While their kids dont get to spend the summer with their parents. Their spouses are left to manage the home, so NG with very specific skills can pick up garbage. Also, their civilian employers are left understaffed and can't replace deployed guards members.
