Went ahead and updated my map of cities with higher crime than D.C. to accommodate the two new states from the Deep South who are sending troops to the capital. In the five states there are 64 cities, home to 1.7 million people, that had more crime in 2024 than D.C. www.pbump.net/o/more-peopl...

War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength. We are living 1984! Don’t bother me with the facts. We all know DJT is targeting blue cities even though St. Louis, Memphis, Birmingham, Kansas City, Alexandria, and Cleveland—all cities in red states—have higher crime rates.

A little misleading. In my native state of SC most of those dots are small towns, not cities; only three (Myrtle Beach, Sumter, and Spartanburg) are sizable, and Myrtle's rate is affected by massive tourism. Most major cities have lower rates than DC.

Go to the county level and watch that map fill up with horrifically crime ridden counties in states like Alabama. With a crime rate of 102/1000, Bessemer has the highest crime rates in America. One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 10.

Here’s the gag noticed he hasn’t said anything about Georgia or Atlanta even though during the elections he had a huge bone to pick with us. They’re trying not to scare away the FIFA money because what Spanish-speaking person wants to come to this country right now ? 🥴💀

"Republican-controlled states have higher murder rates" Crimes per 1M trips * NYC: 1.3 * Dallas: 38.0 "Texans 17% more likely to be murdered than Californians" "being within California’s borders 40% less gun violence" "Liberal policies, like California’s, keep blue-state residents living longer"

Cities in blue states have less crime and murders! Higher life expectancy, maternal mortality more Scandinavia (California) than Africa (Texas) Even lower overall tax rates than red states like Texas (which replace wealth income tax with higher taxes and fees on the poor) while subsidizing them!

Oh Philip Bump—I do miss your columns! You have a knack for asking the right—the telling—questions. A lot of bad questions, bad comparisons and casual uses of data have been sparked by Trump’s assault on the state, democracy and the international order. Keep giving us the alternative!

I would like to add a personal observation here. On Saturday I was in downtown Cleveland, according to this map a high-crime city. I felt perfectly safe and so did many other people. If this allegedly high-crime city felt safe, I can only imagine how safe DC must feel.

People from other parts of SC are legit afraid of Columbia and… it’s very nice? I love living here. Tells you how easy it would be to demonize a city even further away from the county they rarely leave.

This Crimes coming Down, No Problem message will not turn out well. Too many ppl have had their lives turned upside down by crime already.

Fair enough, but optics is important and you tweet (unlike the article) engages the crime meme that Republicans want you to focus on rather than the creeping fascism, which is what they’re really up to.

5 states (so far). The insane prez is forming a New Confederacy starting with occupying the Capitol, something the old Confederacy was never able to do. From there…

I don’t think this point is relevant. Yes, they’re hypocrites. But GOP in all of those states would love to have a militarized presence in their own “undesirable” neighborhoods. They are chomping at the bit to make that possible. This effort in DC just paves the way for them.
