I mean.... While I get what you mean isn't that kind of beautiful? The idea that even those who we vehemently disagree with and view as the polar opposite in values still have enough shared belief in democracy to put country over party? Would be a small bright spot in all this

Only center-right folks write for the NYT. I'm sure there are various other publications with more center-left writers who have been writing op-eds about the same theme but not being seen by a national audience like the NYT is.

Yeah, but.. if you fight Trump you are my ally. I don’t care who you are, why you are doing it, or how bad your other political positions are. Until this crisis is over I don’t care what you said or did in the past or what you will do in the future. I only care that you are fighting Trump today.

Big sigh. Dropping my head. 😮‍💨😞 Yeah. Yeah. But those MFs created a permission structure & carried water 4 all of this bullshit. But, yeah. Yeah. Until this fight is over . . . but I don’t want them acting like we’re friends. Cuz we’re not. However, we can join forces to beat 🟠, the tech-bros & P2025

But that's just a military coup. Somehow Americans need to look at their Constitution again, and figure out where it went wrong. Maybe a different form of government would work better? Start looking at other countries; other models.

Y'all..We can deal with Brooks later. We need EVERYONE in the fight against fascism, even and especially assclowns like Brooks and Stephens. Eye on the prize, we'll sort the rest out later.

“those partisan rallies make this fight seem like a normal contest between Democrats and Republicans.” Perhaps Bernie and AOC would welcome democracy loving elected Republicans to join them. If only there were any.

One thing I think Brooks has wrong is the assumption that Bernie is viewed as a partisan. I think you can find a lot of people who would’ve voted for Bernie in 2016 and have voted for Trump at least once.

I’ll take it. I think if the awakening of broad American praxis and political muscle against authoritarianism is from a center right politico columnist, I’ll take it

Me too. However, I will and forever grumble “you MFs helped get us here”. Yet, even in that, it’s only right that they help to un-fuck this situation. They should be on the frontline helping to take down the monster and the monstrosities they helped to create and maintain.

Jonathan Last was earlier and better. Brooks oped still has that hint of it's really the progressives' fault. Last, also a conservative says fuck ideology. Follow whoever leads. Article on the Bulwark and excellent.

The mental image of an alien face hugger holding a tiny little hammer and sickle as it launches at Brooks was the laugh I didn’t know I needed this AM, thank you.

This is the same “somebody ought to do something” dreck Brooks has been shitting out for a two decades. Notice he didn’t call on Republicans to actually *impeach* the president. Welcome, David. Here’s your sign. Now stand here with us united. And shut the fuck up forever more.

And that’s why I can’t fully get onboard w/him. His opening remarks pull me in. I’m like, no I don’t like him. He helped sane-wash this 🐂💩, but he has a good point. Then comes, as you so aptly described it, the razor blade inside the apple. He does that in every single post, speech, or discussion.

The problem is half of the country has been fed a steady diet of lies and hate. It's not that they have no valid opinions or viewpoints on problems this country faces, it's that those problems have been scapegoated into brown people and queers and turned into poison.

There's a reason AOC and Bernie are pulling weight rallying in Ruby red states. The Democrats stopped listening to rural and conservative voters at all, so where the hell else were they supposed to turn? They need to be brought into the tent, but they also need to see they've been lied to.

I am fine with Brooks as seed crystal. What I will not be fine with is history books 30 years from now referring to the Brooksian Uprising and ignoring all the people who took the real risks in this fight. "Inspired by Brooks's words, marchers took to the streets."

Even with this, even with all of this Brooks can’t help himself but talk about the “progressivism” of colleges that “tell half of the country your voices don’t matter” motherfucker this is and has always been about these specific bigots that call themselves MAGA just admit you were always wrong jfc
