what’s genuinely wild about all this is that we have people on tv talking about LA as this apocalyptic hellhole they must invade with military force and I’m here and I haven’t seen shit all day, not even an abnormal number of helicopters I drove to D&D tonight, I’m just hanging out! it’s fine!

The same thing happened in Portland in the summer of 2020: sure, we were Black Lives Matter protesting downtown at night, but even two blocks away from the protests you would never have known it.

They used the same narrative in Portland. It burnt down every night. The next morning it had all been rebuilt. We have amazing construction business's here

I think it’s easier for them to fuel their own propaganda bc of their disconnected idea that LA is “the big city” and downtown must obviously be the center of that, disrupting everything, and like, lol. Like the FOX host saying Stephen Miller “grew up in Santa Monica, which is next to downtown LA”

They talk about LA like it’s Manhattan with palm trees. Most of it is more like if Queens had an optional downtown. It’s a VAST patchwork of working class communities, every type of person & culture imaginable, all getting stuck in traffic, together. It’s as real as America gets, all the good & bad.

downtown LA is less important to LA than “downtown <city>” is to basically any other city it’s mostly somewhere with bad traffic we have to go through on the way to somewhere else

Or somewhere people go only when they get called for jury duty or a traffic ticket. I lived in a DTLA loft for a bit years ago, it was cool but even then it felt like a pretend big city (comically amplified by the film crews outside every day literally pretending it was NYC)

I love two miles from downtown and have been to two different birthday parties for children at two different public parks in the last two days. Uh, it’s all extremely fine and pleasant and normal, folks. With god tier weather and food and people, to boot.

people having no ability to comprehend life in cities is such a huge problem. boomers in omaha NB who have never been to a city with over 1M ppl in it only know about cities from Fox and Facebook. So they see one city block on fire and assume the whole town is like the combat zone from cyberpunk

It's a big place. We know that. We understand it is not all over the sprawl. But...we know it is happening in a part of LA and that's enough. Because, we understand that if it can happen in one area it can happen anywhere. Even in the areas you visited today.

Had some Aussie brainwashed Trumper pals visit Portland the day after Trump was elected. They were astonished at how clean and lovely it was as they thought "Left protests" had destroyed it. "I guess Trump fixed it already.* They said. Sigh.

In my town, during the protests following Floyd's murder, a lot of my exurban conservative acquaintances made a lot of declarative statements on social media about what was happening around my neighborhood downtown that did not comport with reality. In the slightest.

I’m not saying the cities are comparable in any other way, but I feel about the land area of Los Angeles the way I feel about Kansas City: Just how much space does this burg take up??!!? Because there is just so much land area and getting anywhere outside your local community is an effort.

There are no riots and no need for National Guard or the Marines. I was here for the Watts and Rodney King riots and the few incidents that the pathetic POSER and his posse are whining about pale in comparison.

I live in Portland. During the unrest of trump 1 here, a buddy of mine that lives in Indiana asked me "what the hell is going on there?" because the local news he was watching was Portland Anarchy 24/7. I was genuinely perplexed at the diff between his perception and reality.

I've been told this about NY; meanwhile, on my last trip, me and a friend closed out a bar, closed out the bar his bartender friend then goes to after work, got pizza at 4am, and walked back home, pizza in hand, as the sun came up on the city. These places rule man.

On Fox "News" they are constantly showing in the corner of the screen a clip - on a loop - of a single small fire in the middle of a street. Their message is clear - all of LA is on fire!

I live in Portland. The same people were saying the same stuff about us 4 years ago. Not a syllable of any of it was true, so I just assume history is repeating itself, as it is wont to do.

DTLA could be a war zone and folks in Pasadena, Santa Monica, Norwalk etc would have no idea. Folks who’ve never been/lived there can’t grasp the sheer size of LA. 👍❤️👍❤️ #ILOVELA

as someone who lived in LA for 15 years, I can tell you that most people, most Americans, don’t really understand how huge LA/OC actually IS If the news choppers widened the shot it’d show that three streets over nothing is happening—but of course, then they wouldn’t be able to flog it to sell soap

I visited with friends in 2009. We got the train from Anaheim to Pasadena. It was nearly 2 hours, and the train wasn't particularly slow. We were inside the city the whole time. "Sprawling" does not cover it.

Thinking about when I lived in Chicago. LA looks about as chaotic as Chicago did after a few of the homerun derby games, but not even close to what it was like after "repeat the 3 peat".

That's the same as it was with the 2020 protests in Portland, which Trump kept saying had been burned to the ground. Almost no one who lived in the city was even aware of the protest happening in front of the court house.

I suspect if we could see a map with the protest areas plotted out, people would be shocked by how little grounds is actually being covered. Looks like a lot of actions only spans a block or so. This isn’t a mass movement of 10s or even 100s of thousands, this is a relatively small group of people.

ICE raids and anti-immigrant fervor are examples of mass psychogenic illness: -occurrence in a segregated group -the presence of extraordinary anxiety -symptoms spread via sight, sound, or oral communication -a spread that moves down the age scale, beginning with older or higher-status people

Aren't there around 4 million people in the city itself and several million more in commuting distance? The most breathless coverage is putting the protest numbers in the few thousand range. It's a statistical rounding error.

That could apply to Sydney, Australia or any large city equally as well; but anyone with a sense of justice and decency would show empathy with their diverse fellow residents and see the events as the opening to wider attacks on many residents. 'First they came for...'

They did the SAME with "the border" for 8 years.. now #TrumpRegime needs to manufacture a #crisis across the WHOLE country so he starts With the largst city in the BIGGEST most wealthy #BlueState which intimidates him

We are remote employees and 3 of us are in LA area, one gal says she can hear it, but she is in her home and the dog isn't even agitated. She is in the Compton area, not sure where, the two other had some quick power interruptions, but not much at all but they are not in the main city center.

LA is great, it is a beautiful, peaceful city full of art and life. Crime, especially violent crimes have been going down like most cities around the US. The only violence and crime come from ICE and trump.

I mean this is the same as Portland and Ferguson. There’s an entire section of America that is convinced all these major cities have become Mad Max wastelands, despite there not actually being any evidence. That’s what Trump and his goons are banking on.

which isn’t to say there aren’t still protests going on, obviously there are and I love everyone involved, but for large portions of this very large city Life Is Normal right now people are out to dinner, people are at the mall just complete disconnect between that and the television

I think a lot of red/rural America has just never been to a big city, they think of it as small town size but with taller buildings. If they do go they get freaked out at all the people and the fact that it takes some planning to do stuff. Fox and Co knows that and preys on it.

On a related note: protests happen! Much like traffic, they're a thing that happens in even small urban areas. One thing missing from the Typical Urban Background in filmland is the Unrelated Protest or Demonstration. Outside of events like this weekend, mass expression is just a fact of life...

Sure, but do you have even two seasons? (I'll admit I lived five years in San Diego, and there was a drought for at least four of them, so my perspective may be skewed.)

I honestly think it's virtually impossible to comprehend how truly vast the city of LA is if you only know it from movies and TV. Just considering land area within LA city limits, y'all are bigger than the TOTAL area of each of the world's 25 smallest countries.

It’s weird getting texts like “are you okay?” When I literally have not seen a single thing that would suggest that anything interesting is happening in the city. There are probably thousands of Angelenos who have no idea it’s happening.

I liked living there[*] except for that. I agree with everything you and Micah say. [*] Disclosure: I never lived in the city of Los Angeles, but I did live in Los Angeles County and often went downtown and elsewhere in the city proper.

Yeah, people tend to kind of forget just how *big* big cities are. One eye-opening hypothetical I recall is how if you set off a tactical nuke downtown in an average million+ population city, the parts outside the blast zone could just keep going with minimal interruption in most cases.

It’s how it was in Seattle during the BLM protests. Reporters zoom in on one block during the worst 10 minutes then act like the whole city is like that 24/7

Same with Portland -- I lived there longer than anywhere my entire life, I have family still there, with whom I talk often via MS Teams. It's a beautiful city with a lot to offer. That said, I have an acquaintance here in France originally from the east coast who consumes right wing media.

He's convinced Portland is a burned out hellhole where everyone is cowering in the shadows. It's insane what these gullible people will believe. He's never even been there.

Back during the 2020 protests people would have you believe that the CHAZ/CHOP had burned Seattle to the ground, but the whole time it was going I was at work selling food to people going to the beach like there wasn't anything going on.

LA is just a buzzword to trigger all the conservatives who wish they could afford to live here so they make up reasons why they don’t. It’s the geographical equivalent to “that 10 is 4 because they have pointy elbows (and I still have no shot).”

I don't know that one can truly appreciate the size of LA and how it's like a bunch of small cities all bordering each other until they've visited. I didn't fully grasp it until I was there for the first time in October.
