Definitely feel like a lot of my peers are suddenly being weirdly conservative in a way that’s been hard to adjust to

reminds me of the fact that some studies revealed that the human brain as it ages naturally tends to develop more conservative views (which sort of makes sense from a purely evolutionary standpoint i guess? but we're way past that)

However, it's super-complex. E.g. one of the going theories is that if your surrounding is pre-dominantly conservative, it's just more likely that you pick up some of those ideas. Another one is that people may actually not change their opinions, but change their self-identification.

I've slid left on pretty much everything but went conservative on "actually morality is not relative -- please stop electing sex pests and yes, I think Bill Clinton having an affair with an intern should be impeachable."

The "morality is relative" thing is a complete boondoggle dreamed up by conservative grifter like Roger Scruton in the 80s. To the degree to which any serious philosopher argues that morality is "relative" it's only to the degree that they mean it is that "context matters".

Which is to say something humans have believed for basically forever. It is in fact the exact idea expressed in many scriptures. It is hardly new or some kind of pomo plot towards nihilism.

The problem I frequently run into is that I'm "conservative" in the sense of the word on quite some issues... say - human rights. But "conservative" in the political sense doesn't represent that.

Yeah, I find myself thinking "I support family values" and that has everything to do with, like, child care and parental leave and not electing rapists, and very little to do with, like, drag queens.

I feel you, it's like the pendulum swung so far to the left that now it's swinging back with a vengeance. That @aelkus.bsky.social quote is giving me some serious existential dread, tbh.

About 10 years ago my dad went from lifelong conservative to straight blue. This is at 60 yrs old. He said only a few of his positions have changed. Doesn’t recognize the new conservative

Moving to silicon valley has kind of broken my brain, particularly on immigration. I don't really know if that counts as more conservative since nobody is running on a platform of being against highly paid, conservative immigrants and also the problem is then blocking sex ed, diversity programs, etc

the majority of immigrants are poor and impoverished. any platform against immigrants will largely affect poor and helpless people, the rich ones as rich people have always done, will continue to get through. moving to silicon valley and becoming xenophobic is probably not something to admit proudly

Yeah, I’m all for that. A tour I did in Norway talked about how nice (and small) the prisons are there because they focus on rehab. I think they said recidivism is near or at 0. They also have much better social safety nets than we do, though. We have work to fix the reasons crime happens.

my feeling is that recently, things have gotten drastically worse nearly everywhere in a pretty short amount of time and a lot of people are reacting to that by just wanting to go back to the state the world was in before

Got some artsy friends on the elephant site that went “dark mountaineer” aka climate doomerism/degrowth and that whole world is wildly conservative at its core.

i'd be curious to know if this trend is purely amongst cis-het peers or also in your queer peers. when your existence is inherently radical to whatever the status quo is, it's hard to fall into the lulls of conservatism

I think it also helps when you are not a minority in multiple ways. I've even heard that only being discriminated against along one dimension sometimes causes people not to recognize when others are criticizing them for also being bigots in a different way. They see criticism as bigotry ironically.

idk but there's multiple far-right parties in europe with lesbian leaders. usually they're just racist and feel like they've already got their rights, so no worry about losing them.

i think it's very important to not automatically assume that just because someone has a trait, it means they're a good person everyone is human, and therefore, fallible

i think that for the queer folks i see doing this, this is the dynamic bsky.app/profile/well... which: i live in texas. i get it!

I am definitely seeing a lot more people talk about "civic responsibility" and stuff like that -- which I agree with -- but I don't think that's the same as arguing for "family values", or that it implies opposition to prison abolition or socialism

My middle school required everyone to take home ec, and it seemed like a positive thing, in both a 'boys are expected to know how to do these things' sense, and a 'learn to cook for yourself at least a little' sense. Shop definitely still had a weird gender/class thing going on.

this was me during lockdowns be it "healthcare should be taken away as a punishment" even if it will only put more people at risk and encourage lies, or "acab! also i think the cops should enforce mask mandates! this will not give them a pretext to abuse minority groups!"

I think that the idea that you grow old and grow conservative is a bit "describe the symptom" approach. I am finding that as i get older, people become less willing to mask their true beliefs - and suddenly I see that my friends were actually grumpy, conservatives as long as I had known them.

I just don't think it's possible to create a social environment which aggressively polices people on "personal integrity" or whatever and have it stop there. I think that will always turn into a stiflingly conservative society where nonconformity is punished, because the mechanism's so easy to abuse

It's a delicate tight rope to walk. The polar opposite is a kind of atomized libertarianism, which is its own conservativeness. I think that people are still trying to figure out how to have a society with a communitarian outlook which also allows individual variety and diversity to blossom.

this is a big part of what ^ is about bsky.app/profile/dame...

leftists could learn a thing or two from how tech capitalism succeeded with “disruption” via software — instead we seem to be more interested in misunderstanding and abandoning the “means of production” (and disruption)? now is not the time for us to shrink away from technology

I'm noticing more people emphasizing Marx's belief that the people working in factories were the most revolutionary class because they actually have the ability to collectively shutter a system, not merely because they were marginalized. There's a point but it's dissonant w/ expansive solidarity.

The radical right has achieved enough cohesion to achieve some big projects and I think a lot of people across the left (and certainly center left) are internalizing aspects of the right's success as a blueprint for their own projects. Tensions between inclusion vs cohesion are discussed more.

This goes beyond folks just growing older and becoming more conservative, it's happening pretty quickly. The right was super successful in mobilizing around fear and anxiety, and now the left is genuinely a lot more broadly fearful. There are tendencies for fear to manifest in similar behaviors.
