Democrats may think they are softening the message when they say things like "Abolish Trump's ICE" but this is a mistake. The qualifier of "Trump's" shows a deflection of Dem responsibility for perpetuating this agency and funding it.

I'm not at all interested in the illusion of resistance or the illusion of motion. I don't want the Democrats to arguably have done "something". They're prenegotiating their own surrender before they even meet resistance.

Remember "defund the police" and how the Dems started viciously attacking their own base and increased funding to police across the country? They are going to increase funding to ICE.

I wonder if people like yourself will ever actually listen to what Democrats actually say and not minimize Democrats explicit warnings about Trump and what he would do as "Trump bad" and actually look at their proposals for improving the lives of Americans

What does taking ownership do to dismantle the agency? A year ago, if you told me Democrats would be seriously proposing abolition of ICE, I would have called you a lunatic. If they feel they need to blame Trump and minimize their own part to get on board, that's a price worth paying.

I don't think it would necessarily be useful to admit guilt or anything, but it would be useful to say something like "Here's how it was created, here's why it seemed like a good idea at the time, here's why those reasons no longer apply, here's a better alternative."

the Homeland Security Act passed 90-9 in the Senate, and a number of senators who voted on it are still in office 23 years later. Since politicians seem to be allergic to admitting they made a mistake, we have all the more reason to push these dinosaurs out of office.

Listen closely, you hear that? That is the sound of the #GOP polishing the "soft on crime" rhetoric... Now to defuse that, or what I want, SHOVE IT DOWN THEIR THROAT.

Not only a deflection of responsibility but also a route to reform ICE instead of abolishment. In essence it says nothing, since ICE will tautologically not be Trump's ICE as soon as someone else is president.

It is also redundant. Trump has deliberately and systematically branded ICE as a Trump enterprise, in the minds of his voters more than anyone else.

But it was still cruel and evil, like most things the democrats were more than happy to continue and to strengthen from the 9/11 boost in US imperialism and control. Just better hidden. This is not a new problem, just one that has been greatly expanded on and couldn’t have been done without them.

Most deportations now are of people with no criminal record. This is not "greatly expanded", it's a fundamental shift. And that's not even including ICE arresting (and killing) US citizens. We can have discourse like this when we don't have a giant paramilitary force occupying cities.

I dont know how we can begin to have accountability with a broken justice system. I want more democrats to speak out and take action. They absolutely should. I also have to say, i don't think it matters as long as this regime wields the justice department like this...

DHS occupations are both un-American violations of the ideals that birthed the country, and the most American product of its centuries of oppression, systemic racism, and structural inequality. Taking real accountability would mean being honest that they weren’t mistakes; it was very much intended.

Abolish ICE, then stop police from killing another 1000 (disproportionately brown) people this year. Tax Elon Musk 3% of his net worth and every school kid could eat for free that year (with $2.6B left over). There are many solvable problems that neither party is interested in actually solving.

Yeah it’s my primary complaint with Pritzker’s messaging at the moment. Like man we need none of the ICE not just a return to pre-Trump ICE. But I think they’re kind of just trying to plaster his name on everything they can. Or maybe they think there’s some form that they should keep?

The sort of reflexive “moderate” urge is feeling more and more out of touch with reality and I feel like they need to fire those consultants, the sooner the better.

If you told me yesterday that spineless Democrats were about to put ANY sentence together with "abolish" and "ICE" in it, I would have been skeptical. I feel like I'm watching a frog sing and dance, and you're complaining that the term "Hello My Ragtime Gal" is problematic.
