It's for someone who doesn't to spend a fortune every time they go to a mechanic, who doesn't want to replace expensive chips when simple mechanical parts do the job just fine. It's for someone who realizes a car is a tool, not an artistic expression of your personality. The Car Lobby sold that.

Doug DeMuro pointed out Slates greatest weakness, being a 2 door. Limited access for more than 1-2 passengers constricts the market. Family vehicle that's hard to get kids in & out. A young people 1st buy or 1 person commuter vehicle. Maybe rat rod EV. Not much more. NO personality like a beetle..

why does it need 4g. why does the hunk of metal and plastic and rubber i use to transport myself, other people, and objects need a data connection. does my car need to sext another car? does it need to upload data it's gathered on me without my enthusiastic consent? do you not own a smartphone?

because it is extremely useful to be able to monitor an electric vehicle's charging session while you're not physically in the car, given fast charging sessions usually last like a half hour

i currently do not have app access to my vehicle and it has been very annoying while charging out and about to not check on it to make sure the charging session is good

Nothing in that headline is a dealbreaker for me. I would like to know how reliable they are. If the maker is really trying to keep the price down, no frills is acceptable. Cutting corners isn’t.

If you are looking for a vehicle for grocery store runs, may I suggest the Honda Fit to you? It's a small and extremely reliable vehicle that can be found for cheap and can fit quite a lot of things inside of it!

It is! But it's one with pretty decent fuel efficiency. Depending on the infrastructure of the area around where this person lives, this may be more of an upside than a downside, unfortunately. At least where I live, there are no charging stations nearby :(

If you're going to the grocery store may I suggest something that has a roof over your shopping so that it doesn't get wet, stolen or blow away on the way home? There are cars.

If I was a truck gal, I’d happily drive it - better yet, if they made a baseline SUV, sign me up. (And if they were to make a sleeker, lower-slung Ute type version - or collab with Holden on one - it’d go down Down Under like a crispy cold pint of XXXX Summer Bright.)

This is 100% what I want in an EV. One which is affordable as possible and which I can modify later, if I want to, using the savings I've made on fuel...

My work truck is an '81 1 ton utility truck. I don't care about the paint. I haven't washed it in @ 2 years. I listen to the $200 stereo that I installed myself, but I could just as easily listen to my phone. It has manual windows which I'm fine with. I need more load cap. than this though.

Also, I've been driving it for over 30 years, and I bought it at an auction for $2600. It gets horrible gas mileage, but it carries so much stuff that I seldom have to drive it to buy supplies. Most of my work is very close by, and less than 4K miles a year is typical.

In my opinion, this is the best deal and option nowadays. Less bells and whistles means less failing parts that require OEM replacement and ridiculous dealer charges with exception to the electric motor & powertrain of course. It also allows room to customize instead paying for what would be removed

Either you build a giant-ass diesel guzzling monster truck, or you build an electric vehicle that's actually efficient and lightweight. Why do modern EV's HAVE to look like trucks and be the same weight/size? Most EV makers just build bigger and bigger EV's. Without any reason or thought

It's close to what I want, a throwback to the mini-trucks of yesteryear, big enough for the weekend yard/project warrior or move your in-laws couch that was small enough to keep one from overcommitting themselves physically.

People who don’t want a bunch of add ons that cost a lot to maintain. Some newer cars cost thousands to have someone disassemble the front end just to change a head light bulb. I had a Tahoe and the fender, bulb casing and bumper had to be dropped to change the bulb. Stupid design.

ME! Dammit! I am tired of all the bloated electronic crap stuffed into gigantic HOGS, designed to titillate the phone crowd. I need basic transportation without subscriptions and needless electronic complications. I DON"T need a living room on wheels!

Yeah, mechanical doors and windows instead of planned obsolescence based shitty electronics, and it's affordable? Yes please. I literally never planned to own a car newer than about 2008 because they're all designed to fail and cost the owner money instead of just working reliably.

The Verge is so funny. They think they asked "Who would want this?" as a rhetorical question. Then almost immediately 300 people say "I would."

"Who is this for" Bruh its a car. You can easily throw in a Bluetooth speaker and connect your phone, I don't need the shitty car OS to handle that for me.

Return to tradition. Reject the colossal kid crushers, the pavement princesses, and the gender affirming care truck for straight men. Also I liked the concept of the Slate but I don’t trust anything sponsored by Bezos.

Who is it for? Someone who doesn't need a massive, stupid truck with loads of shit to break, or features you must subscribe to. Someone who doesn't need a $70,000-$100,000 vehicle. Someone like, I dunno, loads of people who aren't seduced by big angry, idiotic trucks from most US carmakers.

Not everyone wants a tricked out pick up starting at $50K and going up from to God knows where. Also the less features equals less maintenance & lower maintenance costs

It can also mean less safe if you don’t have backup cameras (though I think those are required by law), sensors that can see cars you can’t, auto braking, “don’t fall asleep at the wheel moron” alerts, etc. People might think they don’t need these until the crash they didn’t avoid.

Yes. But I’m 80,000 miles into having this stuff, and it’s a game-changer. Backing out of street parking is way safer. The auto braking reacts faster than me if something happens by surprise. I think it kept me from hitting someone right before someone hit me from behind a couple years ago.

It’s painted , just comes in one color , it is designed to be wrapped if you want color , it has an amp speaker and a Bluetooth for your phone . It’s modular so you can configure it to your needs and if you need power windows buy a Bronco for 60 grand .

Seems like a perfect vehicle for government agencies, cheap, low operation and maintenance costs, functional to get someone from point A to B, heel equip police departments with these and save a fortune, hell make ICE drive these.

Getting back to what a pickup should be: just enough room for you and a passenger, tools and materials in the back! If only the bed were large enough to accommodate some 6’x8’ plywood with lumber under it … THAT would be a truck!

I love the truck, I hate that it's Jeff Bezos behind it. I was thinking about it as a replacement for my 2010 vehicle, but I'm finding other ways to move around the city and extend the life of my vehicle.

Had me with these until Bezos 🙁 another bazillionaire that doesn’t need my money. I even stopped my Amazon prime because of his political views and who he supported

most of the people who say they want this will actually end up getting a secondhand vehicle because that Slate thing will be terrible value for money

As long as it has climate control and cupholders? I'd buy it. The rest is just shit that winds up being a pain in the butt anyways. But it should still have a radio. Not for nothing but that's still the fastest means of receiving information out there... Guess I could hack one in.

And reading the article, seems it's all optional extras or self-install. Which is great. I'd love a vehicle I could tinker with, relatively speaking. Now if only the range was comparable to current standards.

The better battery is 250 miles, and the standard one is 150 miles. Isn't 250 pretty good? Not sure, but pretty much the same. They're not taking my data, I can use what I like, no effing screens, and a back up cam, which I'm not sure how that works with no screen, but I guess we'll find out?

Contractors who immediately wrap it in vinyl anyway, fleet buyers who add their own radios, and off-grid folks who'd just rip out the cell module. Strip it to the bones = lower base price + blank canvas. The real question is whether the modular add-ons stay affordable.
