This reminds me of a story my uncle told me, where he and some buddies housesat and the last day they put low batteries in a smoke detector and put it in the insulation in the attic. Muffled randomish chirps ahoy

If you really want to get back at someone, make it the fire alarm low battery sound and make it go off at completely random intervals (from 1 to 24 hours apart). It’s too loud for them to ignore, and too random and infrequent for them to locate. And they will waste so much money on batteries.

The environmentally conscious alternative is Midwife Toads, which emit an identical sound around dusk as the weather warms up in spring and summer. (Took us weeks to realise it *wasn’t* an electrical device slowly dying in an external cavity wall)

every summer for the past few years, i'd hear the faint sound of what i thought was my neighbor's alarm clock, usually around 2-5am. it was only last month that i realized it's actually the sound my basement dehumidifier makes when it needs emptying

There is a bird where I live that makes the exact same noise as an APC UPS battery beep. If I'm sleeping with my window open it will wake me up in the morning and it will take me a few seconds to realize that I'm not at work in a network closet or something.

I lived in a rental house once that started to emit intermittent, untraceable beeping from its walls. After months of maddening searches and denials from the landlord, we cut a hole. A long-ago contractor had left a smoke detector buried in the walls that was only then losing its battery.

When we had to dissect cats in biology class in high school my friend recorded a cat meowing hid a tape player on a loop in one of the cabinets in the science room.

butfirstjoy.com/annoy-a-tron... I have the original circuit board with a piezo and battery holder soldered on. With a magnet on the back. It's roughly the size of a stick of gum. These would, randomly, between 2 and 8 minutes, make a "buzz" sound or a beep (it was all random)

One of the "version 1" ThinkGeek Annoyatrons spent time inside a wall socket, inside the back of an office chair, inside the v-shaped slats of a fluorescent ceiling light, among many other places. I really miss that thing.

I turned off notifications for most apps on my phone, but for one I must have only turned off the notifications and not the sounds. Sometimes I get a notification sound without any notification showing up. I’m still refusing to go through all of my apps in the settings to figure out the culprit tho

I actually did something like this. A small device that played very short random sounds at random times, impossible to pinpoint. Hid it in the support of a desk of a colleague. Got a call in the evening with the kind request to remove it because they were NOT AMUSED but *knew* I was involved 😅

I had a colleague who once switched around the usb dongles for the wireless keyboard/mouse sets of all his senior colleagues, that morning was hilarious.

I had forgotten that my library uses RFID tags in books to scan them in and out. So for the first few times when I kept my phone on a book it would make an affronted "what are you trying to pair me with?!" beep that I'd never heard of and it was not fun.

I had this happen. Turned out to be the backup battery on my Verizon internet interface in the basement. It would beep every few hours or so. Could hear it in the living room. Finally I figured out when it would beep so I could be ready and track it too the source.

I remember reading about this type of prank device back in the day. It just beeped at a random interval instead of making the USB noise, but it's basically the same thing. I just looked it up and it turns out you can buy similar devices for just $14 on Amazon.
