one of the really useful takeaways from fukuyama's political order books is a clear conceptual understanding of what corruption *is* in its fundamental nature. and the answer... is patronage networks organized on personal connections! corruption is *inherent* in these discretionary systems!

The Hard Hat Riot is the single most important and consequential independently organized labor action in post-Gilded Age American history but the entire left-of-center has deliberately chosen to completely forget it because of how utterly embarrassing it is to us

This, but also, as a liberal I believe in freedom and human rights for all people, all around the world. That translates into rooting interests in elections where freedoms and rights are on the ballot, as they often are.

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

NEW: "Donald Trump was an active participant in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of young women during the mid-to-late 1990s," per new House Judiciary Dem report. Report has new allegation that Trump raped a 24-year-old and then promised the victim a visa & NYU admission, demanding she stay quiet.

My most joyless leftwing opinion is that any homework that is, explicitly and obviously, homework for parents is bad pedagogy, unfair on parents, particularly on mothers, bad use of the teacher's time and bad for social mobility.

also and respectfully "the teacher sent home a prompt for you to come up with three things that describe your kid" is not some beautiful opportunity for human connection and growth it is a mildly annoying task

I note that everywhere the right wins now, they push for some mix of wars of aggression, looting and destroying the public realm, impunity for corruption and war crimes, roasting the planet with hydrocarbons, deforestation, destroying public education, ethnic supremacy and McCarthyist crackdowns.

Unforgiven. “It’s a hell of a thing, killing a man. You take away all he’s got and all he’s ever gonna have.” “Yeah, well, I guess he had it coming.” “We all have it coming, kid.”

You can go ahead and tell that Duolingo owl that if a chest has 7 gems in it, he doesn’t need to waste my time making me click and doing animations about it and stuff. I’m good. It actually cost me more gems to watch that than I got from it.

Elon Musk is spending hundreds of millions to elect Republicans, an unprecedentedly huge amount from one person, and it’s a lot less than the value of contracts his companies got from this government he paid to elect and worked in. Many reports say “his own money,” few note unprecedentedly corrupt.

🧵 Matt Yglesias is one of the biggest reasons the Democratic Party leadership is so feckless, cowardly, and lazy. I'm not exaggerating. Yglesias is often a featured speaker at private Democratic Party events, despite almost always being wrong. Let's discuss...

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

If you were waiting for your sign to donate to an insurgent campaign for Congress in Missouri...this is your sign. I'm current polling 5 points ahead of 14 yr incumbent Ann Wagner in a seat held by the GOP for 34 years. I need you now. We can take this across the finish line and change Missouri.

Once mass spam texts were made legal, younger donors vanished, leaving a grassroots fundraising machine that subsists on squeezing vulnerable seniors, some of whom give hundreds of times a day. It’s a horrific model. Consultants get generationally wealthy, and the party hollows out its future.

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

We found that as of right now 73% of your campaign donation goes back to the consultants and vendors (!!!), four times more than just 20 years ago. Only 13% to ads. Even I was shocked.

"There should be horses pulling carriages in Central Park" is a perfect Trump position. Essentially none of his business, basically inconsequential, but squarely in the category of "tacky late-20th-century NYC tourist experience," which is the most completely developed part of his brain.

One thing I came to realise over the years is that the press isn’t really used as a way of convincing the public, so much as a disciplinary tool within our political and media class. Here is the party line, here is what we do to anyone who goes against the party line. Go against it at your peril.
