RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."
We often turn to industry outsiders for analysis, but traditionally when this is done, they're either former insiders or they're academics with advanced degrees who've spent years studying the topic.
Yglesias and so many others have neither. They're just well-spoken bloggers and entertainers.
It’s pretty amazing how there was a time when, on one night in a two hour block, we got: Community, Parks and Rec, The Office, and 30 Rock.
Truly must see TV.
Incredible that so many intelligent people--officials, lawyers, journalists--are spending their time on this idiocy. Think of all the more important things they could be doing! But this case is emblematic, not exceptional. The Trump era is just a colossal waste of good people's time and energy.
At 10am Judge Ana Reyes will begin an evidentiary hearing in the golf course case at 10am. I'll try to live-blog from the US Courthouse media room for @lawfaremedia.org . This is a case to stop Trump from converting a historic public golf course, open to all, to a Trump style championship course.
Trump: "I didn't go to Congress. Remember Sleepy Joe? 'Oh, if they would give me approval in Congress!' You're not gonna get approval. You just do it. You're the president."
The American white collar workforce started working from home three days a week for like six months a year into COVID and executives so thoroughly lost their minds over this that they installed Trump II. If anything, AI will create the 7-day workweek.
What does socialism mean? Nothing! It has no intrinsic meaning at all: it isn't like, related to "the social question" or whatever.
It just connotes something bad. So whatever the Bad Thing du jour is, that's socialism
J.D. Vance has been a breathless supporter of Neo-Nazis at home and abroad, promoting their fascist ideas and ideology to a jaw-dropping degree. But he has the fucking nerve to say someone tied to *socialists* doesn't belong in America.
*You* are the un-American ideologue, you goose-stepping dork.
[SENATOR ERIC SCHMITT]: So you’re telling me under oath that you’ve never spoken with an Attorney General nominee?
[JACK SMITH]: No, I don’t think—
[SCHMITT]: WELL THEN *unveils poster* please explain this picture of you with Matt Gaetz!
[SMITH]: That is Media Matters senior fellow Matt Gertz
There's no real point in arguing with his mouth noises, particularly not when preaching to the Bluesky choir, but this is *noteworthy* nonsense. If the revenue were real (it's not), then it would be revenue *of the United States government,* equally available to a Democratic Congress to spend.
Trump: "Because of tariffs, we are taking in hundreds of billions of dollars of profits. It's one of the reasons I can offer, if Republicans win the House and Senate, $5,000 to every adult. We can do it and the Democrats can't, because the Democrats don't have any income."
I continue to hate that the “computer-illiterate elderly people falling prey to computer-oriented scams” demographic seems to include every American politician.
I regret to inform you all that Bernie Sanders is in fact taking meetings with noted rationalist wacko Eliezer Yudkowsky over what AI regulations should look like.

yeah, it's OK to be wrong, but why on earth is the point of a company that takes ten years to understand the basic realities their users face when there are plenty of perfectly competent semi companies making electric trucks?
In term 1, Trump took a strong economy he inherited from Obama, threw in some tax cuts, didn’t mess with it much, & took credit for it. In term 2, Trump decided that he wanted to completely reshape the economy according to his own dumbass beliefs and now we’re Trump University.
NYT has now independently corroborated all the major allegations against Susan Collins in the ProPublica report, including that investigators were prepared to move against her and then Trump intervened to shut it down. This put Trump in a position of exceptional and extortionate leverage over her.
JPMorgan’s commodities team:
“For the first time since the start of the Iran conflict, we don’t have a baseline view. We simply don’t know how to model the endgame.”
The president is just such a stupid asshole. I know we try to ascribe motives to this guy but he’s at the end of the day, when the story is written, just a dumdum idiot with a tiny brain that don’t work so good.
There's really no complicated explanation for this, or any kind of grand theory. It's just Econ 101 and he flat out does not understand it because he's an idiot.
Trump: "If we lose $50 billion a year with a country, and we say 'we're not going to trade with you anymore,' we don't lose $50 billion a year. It's very simple. Right?"
Alito and Thomas have the clearest judicial philosophy possible: If a Democratic president does it, it's tyranny. If a Republican president does it, it's legal.
David Frum: Post-Trump, the US will need to learn from Nigeria, Peru, and the Philippines how to track and reclaim corrupt wealth from a fallen autocrat and his crooked family. The Romans had a simple approach: pass a lex damnatio forfeiting all the wealth of the tyrant and his family to the state.
The best argument for why the Trumps aren't corrupt is that they're happy to accept gifts from people who think they're buying influence when in fact they're all snakes who don't pay their debts.
To every reporter who stands there as Trump shouts down one of your (almost always female) colleagues with insults and bullying behavior without standing up for them -- you know the rest of us can see and hear you, right?
Q: On the checks, we have $40t in debt. If your economic policies are working, why do you need an incentive for people to turn out to vote?
T: I'm doing it as a reward for having to put up w/Biden
Q: You also offered tariff refunds--
TRUMP: Not you
Q: And that didn't happen
T: You're the worst
Quite incredible that the richest man on earth who has legitimately done all sorts of things from paying people to vote and purchasing media in order to twist it to his will is... claiming that Soros (who is not nearly as wealthy) has done the very things Musk absolutely does.
One way to understand Trump's trade views: In his private business, Trump got used to not paying for things—stiffing the granite-countertop contractor, or chandelier salesman—but still got the products anyway. So maybe he thinks America should just be getting the world's goods for free, too.
“We could do tremendous good for ourselves by just not trading with countries” — Trump’s bonkers view of trade is that you become wealthy by not engaging in commerce
Trump thinks that if you pay somebody $10 for a burrito than you have lost the $10, like it has been stolen from you. He's not pretending; this is literally the basis of his trade policy
Trump says that one of the only things we import from Mexico are "hot tamales."
Not tamales -- but "hot tamales."
Because if you go to any crossing on our southern border, you will see 18-wheelers with huge ovens. Those ovens are set to 375 degrees, and they are filled with tamales.
I’m curious, if “eggs expensive under Biden” was newsworthy, how come “Trump intentionally caused every single fucking thing to be heinously expensive” isn’t a story?
The renaming of this lake is so dumb and petty and should not be the focus of the news right now but … I cannot overstate enough just how sad and pathetic this update is for Google
Actual adult people who work in the mainstream press talk to this guy and take him seriously. He's a white supremacist, yes, but he's also just a premium sexless dork.
