Warren: "This has been their argument every time -- they cut taxes and say, 'Ultimately it's really going to pay off for you.' What's happened every time? The academics study it very carefully and say, 'What really happened is the richest people got richer and everybody else got left behind.'"

I have an idea. Why don't European nations (including the UK and Turkey) get together in Poland and agree a new defensive alliance, building new c&c capability absent the US? They could call it the Warsaw Pact and really troll Russia!

Life reflects art - Microsoft has published an AI development code of conduct including that AI should not imitate consciousness. The OC Bible in Dune -> Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind.

Facebook is awash with exploitative scam adverts using AI videos to drive empathy purchases. They set up the idea that an individual is hand-making the products and has faced criticism or abuse. In reality they are just drop-shipping cheap crap from China (and probably skimming card details). Scary.

Hundreds of men, all dressed in black and with face coverings - a 'spontaneous' protest? Are Kent Police incompetent or complicit? Which side of Hanlon's razor are they falling on here?

When I was a teenager and my dad learned that my aunt was tracking my cousins’ movements on an app I remember him saying “what’s the point? You could be doing crystal meth at home!”

New immigration stats show that the numbers of asylum seekers in hotels is down to 16k - falling 50% in a year. Small boat crossings down 23% in the year to June. Numbers waiting for initial decision down from almost 180k to 40k.

“Lanyard class” simply means women who have told a man that he needs to follow the rules, right? At least in America they went for “HR lady politics” to make the misogyny clear.

Brian Mcleish reposted

As far as I can gather, 'lanyard class' lumps together e.g a corporate solicitor, a Russell Group professor, a Whitehall SPAD, a council economic development officer in Durham, and an NHS manager. Not sure it has all that much explanatory power.

Lots of news reports go on about how Khamenei hasn't been seen in public since March. Gee, I wonder why that is? Remind me, what happened to the last Supreme Leader, his dad?

This reply just fully encapsulates the gender critical journalist mindset. The perceived monopoly on victimhood, the unbridled rage that they might be seen for what they truly are, and the mountainous, gravity defying hypocrisy. How very dare you, don't you know who I am?

Stephen, even by your increasingly aggressive standards, your comments about me here are deeply shocking and offensive. I don’t really have anything further to say to you, I just hope you’ll reflect on whether this is an appropriate thing to post so soon after someone killed themselves.

It remains the case that most councils are run well by decent people who want to do the right thing.

What’s a thing from your area of expertise (or special interest) that you think it would behoove everyone else to know?

Looking at my outfit this morning I realise that I have evolved into my final form, that of the middle aged academic I would have been in a slightly different version of my life. Jeans, check shirt and blazer, trainers, greying beard and glasses that slip down my nose on the regular.

Good example of how, for good and for ill, TUs represent the interest of their current membership at the expense of their future one. True that you are unlikely to learn much about this 23 year old. You might learn however that their boss has never hired outside of the University of Oxford, tho.

Dr Seth Thévoz@seththevoz.bsky.social

This is a disingenuous example. While MPs’ caseworkers seldom moonlight, there have been many, many cases over the years of researchers, speechwriters, campaign managers, office managers all moonlighting, typically as lobbyists - or even 🇨🇳 spies. We would never have found out without the public list

Think this whole thing is a good example of a real challenge for AI design is that frankly the AI *ought* to say in this case “you’re burnt out. Catch up on sleep and get back into reading with something you loved as a child, like Betsy Byars or Judy Blume”, not “you’re right! This book IS hard!”

Heath is just batshit crazy so hard to hate, but words cannot express my contempt for Jews who thought that the far right was absolutely fine as long as they drew a careful line between anti-Muslim bigotry and antisemitism.

Non-ironically, yes. Lowers the value and makes it easier, therefore, to demolish and rebuild at density, which is the one of the two available secret sauces to “have a thriving high street”. (The other is “be v rich”.)

The original clip posted on X excludes the woman saying “it’s a range of things that is also rape” and Manivannan saying “none of which is less or more worse” - and instead just includes them saying “it’s a spectrum”. Extremely misleading. Misinformation really.

Same argument always, and always wrong. The private sector is *never* in a better position to buy and operate not-for-profit assets because its cost of capital and, therefore, required returns are always—always—higher than the state's. Which means higher user costs and/or lower service quality.

This is an extraordinary story, centred on a group of remarkable women, but it just makes me mourn for the millions of women and girls trapped in Afghanistan, denied not only the freedom to play sports, but to speak, learn and live as they choose. We must not forget them.

Typically good take from Pete. Literary devices or tropes (“this murder mystery exists to explore the world I’ve created”/“this fantastical concept is an allegory”) are interesting. Genres are just a marketing tool, and not a very interesting one.

Pete Fraser@petefrasermusic.bsky.social

3: what is your favourite genre? I hate the concept of genre. I think it dulls the imagination and does nothing so much as close avenues of possibility.

French forces held a fierce defensive perimeter around Dunkirk and lost 18,000 souls. 40,000 became POWs. Without their resolve we wouldn’t have our nation’s story. It’s estimated 20-60k French resistance fighters died during the war. You’re only diminishing yourself with comments like this.
