reminds me of academics who have thousands of paper PDFs on their laptop, with some degree of curation. maybe open software projects should have explicit bibliographies

Anthropic found the origin of the NIST elliptic curve seeds: they were generated with drand48()! No one was seriously worried, but this should put some FUD to rest, completing the NIST ECC rehabilitation arc… just in time to be retired in favor of PQ. Also, we raised $36 Ki for ISRG. Yay!

words.filippo.ioThe NIST Elliptic Curves Seeds Bounty Has Been ClaimedWe now know how the seeds of the NIST elliptic curves were generated: they’re not the hash of some saucy sentence, but the output of drand48() seeded with the time, which was indeed in 1997–98.

Well since I messed up posting the link yesterday, here it is again (oops) spritely.institute/news/end-to-...

spritely.instituteEnd-to-end encrypted relays for OCapN — Spritely Institute
Christine Lemmer-Webber@dustyweb.bsky.social

Huge news! End-to-end-encrypted relays (via the Noise protocol) comes to Spritely Goblins and OCapN! spritely.institute/news/end-to-... Relays are federated (there is no "official relay", you can easily run your own) but also oblivious, and merely manage routing encrypted messages. A big milestone!

it doesn’t matter how worthless you think the tech is, i can wholeheartedly assure you that you do not want to live in a world where anthropic and openai are the sole arbiters of who has accelerated learning, development, and production capabilities.

I don't think everyone needs to use AI. I don't think it's good that AI is being shoved everywhere when it's not wanted or asked for. But I don't find the complete hatred of all AI tools productive or helpful to building a better internet. And others appear to be feeling the same thing.

Multiple people I know have told me that they love the idea of Bluesky, and want it to succeed, but have abandoned it for X because the use agentic tools in their work and find them incredibly useful, and feel that any mention of their usage here leads to hate and ridicule.

Google replaced pushing Git tags for certain source code with obtaining source code via Google Drive after making a request through Google Forms. It's completely ridiculous and they've gradually become very slow at handling requests. They're in clear violation of the GPLv2 now.

it’s funny to make fun of people who vibecode too close to the sun and have products that burn customers’ money or have deleted databases or whatever, but i just find it sad to look at the opposite of people who don’t make anything ever and yet use their free time to just whine about slopcode

i want to do a little ✨ ama about atproto ✨ in this thread. no question is too simple if you’ve been curious about atproto but don’t know much (anything?) about it, ask any question and i’ll try to explain it in my own words. (+ would love to hear from friends who aren’t very active on bsky)

> I'm not anti-AI, but I am anti-computing-as-disempowerment. I am pro computing-as-empowerment. And the AI industry is a hot, terrible mess right now.

> Most especially, I am troubled by the concentration of power in the hands of corporations like OpenAI and Anthropic. People are relying on these tools and making them core parts of their lives, and they are the greatest surveillance machines we have ever seen. […] I think that should change.

If you can't call yourself out supporting verbal violence of harassment, the problem is not AI slop, but how lame humanity became in recent years.

I started the podcast, because I actually think we are already doing all the things we need to do. We just need to scale them up by nudging people away from Amazon and towards the weird food coop in their town.

I host a podcast where I interview people running organizations like this. It's called Future Mending Radio and I have profiled food and tech coops, pay what you can restaurants, public parks, clothing swaps, and more.

Bora M. Alper reposted

This is why I think we have to open more businesses and coops with an ethical charter, to redirect flows of money from the worst global mega-corps into versions of community and mutual aid. The scale of the economy is way too vast to not engage on that terrain. We need assets and property.

WIRED got a copy of a New York Intelligence and Counterterrorism Bureau report that has a curious term for opposition to AI development and data centers: "anti-tech violent extremist activity." Great reporting here on how law enforcement is tracking big tech opponents www.wired.com/story/us-law...

we desperately need a radically pro-technology leftist movement, one that rejects palantir and silicon valley’s vision of “technology” without also becoming radicalized against technology

One of the things I wrote about is that the ATproto architecture requires a "god's-eye view", and that at best, we will probably end up getting a small pantheon of gods. Which is a less participatory form of decentralization. It does seem like where the ATmosphere is going currently.

“Çöküntü devirlerinde iki çeşit insan meydana çıkıyor. Namussuzlarla namuslular...

As I said elsewhere I am basically radicalized about this. We fight now for personal computing and personal agency or we lose another decade to closed clouds We push now for an open internet and open models. Nobody is going to hand it to us because they’re nice

having used claude extensively for the past couple of months, i think there is still a lot of value to understanding your code and steering it intentionally. the amount of incidental complexity claude accumulates otherwise (which mostly results in bugs that it can't ever fix reliably) is staggering.
