The Amazon is shifting from carbon sink to carbon source. 15 yrs of CO2 data show that fires are the dominant carbon source and now outpace forest uptake. Deforestation is driving the damage, amplified by drought and El Niño. Protecting forests is climate action. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Climate disaster keeps disastering: Satellite monitoring has detected massive plumes of methane pouring from Chevron's Gorgon LNG plant in Western Australia. (This is the one connected to the world’s biggest carbon capture and storage project WHIICH IS ALSO FAILING) www.abc.net.au/news/2026-10...

I’m reminded of this article from a few weeks ago about the people holding up the Internet sheets.works/data-viz/hol...

sheets.worksThe People Holding Up the Internet: Who Maintains Open SourceFour billion phones ask one text file what time it is, kept by a UCLA lecturer in his spare time. We counted who maintains the code under your phone.
Charlie Warzel@cwarzel.bsky.social

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Yesterday was the 10 year anniversary of the adoption of the Kigali Amendment -- a huge win for the climate. This article illustrates the point I made in my latest Substack newsletter -- geopolitics matter and can be leveraged for good outcomes. (1/3)

Michael Roth is a mensch on many counts

Right - gas turbines are so expensive right now that it's unbelievable. But tech companies are also rich beyond belief and if gas gets them online quicker they'll happily do it. We know a clean grid is cheaper for everyone - data centre developers are thinking about themselves, not everyone

Erik Schlenker-Goodrich@riogranderift.bsky.social

The vast majority of folks are well aware of the fact that data centers do not really care about power generation costs but, rather, “speed to power.” And well aware, too, that The Breakthrough Institute peddles in disinformation, deflection, & deception, as with this post.

Poland’s PM nailed it: “Anyone who, for any reason — treason, stupidity, or money — wants to weaken Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression is clearly acting against their own nation, the security of their own state, and its sovereignty,” Mr. Tusk said.

nytimes.comNATO Details Plan to Shield Ukraine’s European Allies From RussiaWith the Russians intensifying sabotage, arson and cyberattacks against European nations supporting Ukraine, NATO divulged a blueprint, in case of war, to deter the Kremlin.

This was led by Evi Wubben and Xiaoqing (two early career researchers) and involves a great team. I have a feeling this will cause some discussion and rethinking, because it implies we don't have to look for period of higher GHG during the MCO. Still a very warm world at relatively low CO2.

ClimateDynamics@climatedynamics.bsky.social

We compiled a bunch of temperature proxy data and concluded that the Miocene Climatic "Optimum" wasn't significantly warmer than the rest of the (very warm) early Miocene. The MMCT was definitely a cooling. Implications for CO2 versus ocean circulation mechanisms. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
