I'd have a bit more time for this MattyY take if I wasn't 99% sure that had the result gone the other way he be all over Twitter smugly claiming there are important lessons for leftists to learn from Lula's failure (be more conservative, do not fight for anything ever).

ghost malone ergo propter bones@proptermalone.bsky.social

I think this is broadly correct but it’s a symptom not a cause- the reason I’m deeply invested in the democratic choices of e.g. Brazil is that there’s a really big difference between Lula and Bolsonaro! a characteristic of democracy is that it allows for very frequent big direction changes

If the UK and France can't or won't hold the line against a Victor Orban Secretary-General bid, they should give up their Permanent Seats on the Security Council. No shame in no longer being globally relevant, but if it really has gotten that bad it would be humiliating to keep pretending.

The fact that they re-elected him changed the whole way we can look at the US. This is no longer a civilised or trustworthy country. We need to protect ourselves from them.

This is just dreadful stuff from Kuenssberg: "What has the government done to cut the national debt?" ONS: "Public sector net debt was provisionally estimated at 94.0% of GDP, 0.7 percentage points lower than a year earlier"

every now & then someone on the anti-trans side will get cold feet about how openly ugly it's all getting—they want to keep the image of a nice, sensible centrist but it's never enough for them to get off the train

Matthew Yglesias continues to say that talking about ICE and excessive force in immigration enforcement helps Republicans. He is obviously wrong about this and refuses to acknowledge the data. Way past time for everyone to update their priors on this.

Hey everyone, gather around! Elon Musk, the trillionaire defense contractor currently spending >$400m on political campaigns to prop up the party of a deeply unpopular president who launched the Iran War has some thoughts about Ukraine, elites, and money in politics.

It had its issues before, but The Times under Gallagher has become a deeply bigoted publication It's bad for the public discourse, but also bad for the publication itself: talented reporters and journalists have their ethics and credibility undermined by this poison

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

A thing you notice if you get mobbed by terfs is: the anti trans stuff (transgender people are terrifying sex criminals scheming on ways to horrifically violate you) is just the same as the anti-migrant stuff (migrants are terrifying sex criminals scheming on ways to horrifically violate you).

Dan Sohege@danielsohege.bsky.social

I see the Times is going full on attack disabled individuals as scroungers and layabouts with no consideration for how PIP is not an "out of work benefit" and how for many it is essential support to actually work and live.

The more combative Dems get, the more of this they will run into. It will be a coordinated wave of elite opinion, scolding them, tamping them down. The fight strategy *only* works if they are willing to bull their way through it, blow it off, mock it. (Their history does not raise one's hopes.)
