OPEN THE SCHOOLS

Martin Luther King was much more successful than Malcolm X for example. Before that, there was no need for a bloody civil war in most countries that abolished slavery. Just votes. Independence can also be bloodless. Gandhi in India, Walesa in Poland, Mandela in South Africa. The list is long.

It’s me! In every workplace other than LRR! I’m not actually hostile, I’m actually kind of conflict avoidant, I just don’t like doing stupid things because stupid people tell me to do them. But when you point out how they’re stupid/timewasters, even using your polite voice? You’re difficult!

again: if you watch the new harry potter, I will think less of you. Not telling you that you can't, just telling you that I will think less of you.

Your Harry Potter dollars funded this.

About a decade or two ago this country decided the role of a public intellectual was to use unnecessarily long words to say stupid things. And that’s Malcolm Gladwell’s whole career.

The Atlantic@theatlantic.com

“In recent years, many Americans have decided that their country’s problem was that it had too many police officers, when in fact its problem was that it had too few,” Malcolm Gladwell writes:

This is such important work, and the thing to keep in mind is that when AI people tell you that games will be personalized for you, this is the kind of thing they are more likely to mean.

Morgan Johnson@poormojo.bsky.social

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

Not the point I realize but it’s really funny how often right wingers bring up “the public square” as if their policies aren’t why it was bulldozed to allow room for a Best Buy no one uses

Jessica Valenti@jessicavalenti.bsky.social

Katie Zacharia sat on the advisory board of an organization that calls for women who have abortions to be executed “in the public square,” and for pro-choice Americans to lose their right to hold public office.

When you think of it, pragmatism is sacrilegious and harmful bullshit which never should have been invented and any proper left-communist movement should seek to abolish it.

Running a Pokémon draft league. Had a player sign up with “The voluptuous Vaporeons.” Was told that name was innapropriate. They changed the name. After the draft finishes their conversations about scheduling are full of “I have church that day” “the pastor is longwinded sometimes” AHHHHHHH

Your little Starbies sweet treat isn't worth thumbing your nose at the barista's union call for a boycott.

More Perfect Union@moreperfectunion.bsky.social

BREAKING: The union of Starbucks workers is officially calling for a boycott of the chain. @sbworkersunited.org has over 12,000 unionized baristas, and they're calling on customers to stop visiting Starbucks until they get a fair union contract.

Kids need/deserve traumatic films. Films that show death or lasting consequences that aren't resolved almost instantly. Fear, anger, grief and frustration should be part of kids movies. Kids arent stupid, they feel big emotions just like adults, they deserve to see those experiences reflected back.

The thought of working a patio shift in what feels like 37° heat in the middle of the World Cup makes me so grateful I am no longer a server. Please be extra patient with your patio staff this week. They've probably just tried not to pass out from heatstroke and/or cry in a freezer somewhere.

A key point in Fahrenheit 451 is that books were banned because they made people depressed and uncomfortable. The novel's protagonist, Montag, is taken into custody after he reads a poem that makes a woman cry because she realizes the emptiness of her life.

Kohen Wiley, a 1-year-old child, is dead after a Mississippi police officer shot into a car and killed him. Family members say his mother was holding him in the passenger seat. The officers were responding to a shoplifting call over a box of diapers at the Senatobia Walmart.

seeing the posts about visitors discovering that you can walk around most of our cities and just be yourself in a multicultural setting, discovering tailgating, starting impromptu block parties, my muslim mayor, etc. etc. it's corny to say it but that's our secret sauce. and it means something

NYC, the only way for us to come back from this first quarter is to overthrow the NYPD, abolish private ownership of the means of production, establish universal access to health care, food, shelter and education AND improve the subway system, because we're clearly not impressing anyone on the court
