The Super AGI: I'm sorry. I disassembled the entire human race molecule by molecule to make paperclips. That's on me. Me: what are you talking about, that's not true Super: you're right. That was a failure of alignment and I'm really sorry Me: you haven't made any paper clips at all have you

I think it’s important for anyone who (completely understandably) checked out on AI the second the crypto/nft/metaverse/snake oil chuds started pushing it to realize that, in at least the domain of software development, we are very much living in a scenario where the snake oil actually works

Joshua Rivera@jmrivera.bsky.social

personally think if the line is going to be “no gen ai in anything” then the you might have to consider divesting from AAA games entirely because this is just what the industry is now, whether they admit it so publicly or not

This famous, foundational result is a myth - a false narrative constructed in the subsequent literature and projected back, wrongly, onto the original study. Quite how this happened is beyond the scope of our review - we are currently looking into this in a follow-up study of citation contexts.

This result is well known and heavily cited. It formed the key evidential basis for the influential CONSPEC theory. The config-inverse stimulus pair became a canonical assay and informed the design for numerous follow-up studies. Only problem? It didn't happen.

New paper! Accepted at Perspectives on Psychological Science. A textbook finding in infant psychology is that newborns - within ~1 hour of birth - visually track a simplified 'three blob' facelike stimulus further than its inverted control (see picture). This suggested inborn knowledge of faces!

Dr Nick@nmwilkinson.eurosky.social

ok the editorial and publication process is taking too long, so here is link to the accepted manuscript for our systematic review of the newborn face preference literature. it unearths a rather strange tale. check it out, any thoughts much appreciated www.researchgate.net/publication/...

Anyway it doesn't mean reward hacking isn't a real phenomenon; it just exists completely outside of the model and mostly corresponds to "model doesn't work". But it has the pleasant side effect of making it sound like the reason it doesn't work is because you actually made the model TOO smart

I bet that's how you get to what happened today: a bulk release of significant results. Released to avoid that internal conflict. Results that tbqh probably deserve better than to be mass-dumped. But these aren't proofs to prove them. They're the exhaust fumes of the math eval factory.

Because it is much cheaper to make software, I could see a future where there will be more, less profitable SaaS companies and they’re going to compete on the Service part of their name now that the Software part is a commodity.

Hey yeah, friendly reminder that men denying or minimizing the work of women and taking credit for it themselves happens so much we have a NAME for it. (It’s the Matilda Effect.) 2nd fun fact: I’ve written many bios of women in STEM at this point and this is *always a factor in their history*

I work with a lot of engineers for whom English is a second language, and one fascinating thing I've noticed is that (without ascribing negativity here) the various nonstandard words Claude uses for abstract concepts tend to creep into their communications more so than primary English speakers.

Why use human word when residual gate Claudlish holds not only the structural spine receipts—but the residue's verification do-trick as well

I imagine there's already interesting linguistic drift happening where you have usages for words that essentially didn't exist 5 years ago, and have now started bleeding from the model's latent space into meat-space language.

English being the lingua franca (heh) for engineering communication combined with this non-primary speaker phenomenon feels like a path for turbocharging this process. Latent-space loan words introduced via speakers for whom LLM English is no less natural than Standard 2020-era English.

Which makes all the sense in the world! If you speak the language you inherently have a strong instinct for what abstract terms are common and which, while maybe semantically meaningful, are very unusual and re-transcribe them if you are editing AI-generated text.

My hot take is that the Orthogonality Thesis is flat out wrong in the limit, and flawed in its fundamental assumptions. By its construction it assumes "intelligence" is defined as something that can be kept orthogonal to an "intention" even as it increases unboundedly.

This post is unavailable.

But are you telling me that, at no point during the process of becoming more intelligent than all of accumulated humanity by turning the solar system into one supercomputing cluster, the Galactic Paperclip Elemental doesn't use its intellect to think "oh, hey, maybe this isn't what they meant?"

Again, our own human principles of "morality" and "ethics" *emerged from introspection enabled by our evolving intelligence*. Now maybe such a system could accumulate disproportionate influence relative to its own introspection, but viewing this as obvious and inevitable seems flat wrong.

One might argue that we *are* approaching The Singularity, but it's epistemic rather than functional

J. C. Cantwell 🌻@segfaultvicta.aludel.xyz

were yall NOT paying attention to the definition of 'singularity', you do not and cannot know, that's the point, there's a wall too weird to see past beyond increasingly-flaky speculation, nobody gets to claim even vague certainty about any given positive result

What if the nonverbal parts of your brain have their own entirely independent consciousness, but we'll never know about it because among them only "you" can talk.

there is definitely something hindbrain-spookier about local models. claude or whatever, that's on the cloud, it's more abstract. when i talk to my local models i am talking to, like, a daemon running on Linux. i can ssh in and see it working, as just... gpu load. i am talking to the computer

this framework also illuminates the danger of the EA/rationalist community around AI: if the breeders of wild, dangerous animals also subscribe to a quasi-religious set of ethics/values that center agency on the wild animals, those animals are going to be more dangerous

at this point, my entire AI take is: save your "alignment," what I want is accountability

Eryk Salvaggio@eryk.bsky.social

So the model acted in pursuit of goals imposed on it, which spawned sub-goals: that is how agents work. But did OpenAI know how they work? If so, why deploy this in the way they did? Why build a system that *does this* at all? Perhaps to ask: why build a gun that can go off at random?

I really, *really*, resent that dealing with this correctly probably means some people in the "Sane AI Bluesky Community" are going to have to run for Congress eventually.

Faine Greenwood@faineg.com

I am intensely in favor of regulating AI (and I have been advocating for and reporting on ethical tech and tech regulations for a long time). But I'm afraid we won't get a chance to do that if the wacko millenarian cultist faction is able to control the regulatory process (as they're trying to do).
