As we’ll all be using this more, a proper introduction: I’m a verification producer with the CBS News Confirmed team in London, by way of Ireland and Erbil and Philly and a bunch of other stops. I specialise mainly in OSINT, defence, conflict, big boats, and, increasingly, the far-right.

30 years ago pre-Ks had “Officer Friendly” come in and talk to us about how important it is to wear seatbelts and not touch the oven. I still remember a fairly unsetttling description of a burn victim from when I was 4.

Today's protests in Hasakah aren't particularly noteworthy - some people, largely from an Arab neighbourhood where the PYD was never popular, want more integration into the state - but the counter protest has finally given me a good photo of one of the wildly contraversial Mazlum Abdi flags.

65 yrs ago tonight, CBS broadcast the second nuclear-war-themed episode of “The Twilight Zone” to air in a month. Written by Rod Serling, “The Shelter” dramatically and effectively distilled the profound moral/ethical dilemmas presented by the family fallout shelter during a serious nuclear crisis.

"Moments later, a U.S. missile slammed through the car roof. Rather than explode, it sliced up the Corolla like a weaponized can opener." Feels like it has been a while, but here's the latest usage of the U.S.'s AGM-114R9X "Ninja Missile."

I grew up in Pennsylvania. The stoner kid came running into Home Ec saying a plane had hit the World Trade Center, and of course no one believed him until the teacher came in crying. In my recollection we watched the second plane hit, but I don't know if that's a real memory.

I was young, but old enough to remember the time 'before', and how the country changed profoundly. That didn't happen overnight. There was a time we cared about each other a little more until the darkness took over.

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.
