And how long before the reduction in net migration is rightly called out as a drag? Consistent self harm

OBR cites Brexit as one of the “adverse shocks” that has hit the UK since 2008.

Jon Loveridge reposted

A useful thing that the OBR might do but which the government probably can’t: a nice long section clarifying the costs of the Iran war on the British economy and public finances.

Only 46% of Conservative voters and 51% of Reform votes would stay out of the EU. What a colossal waste of time and money the last 10-years has been. Vandalism by sections of society that were frankly, either too comfortable and bored or understandably desperate.

Otto English@ottoenglish.bsky.social

Wait.... 29% of Reform voters would consider rejoining the EU... and 16% don't know And a mere 51% would vote to stay out. My giddy aunt - this is bonkers

Just heard Hunt on the radio saying Labour needs to "put the economics before the politics" in the Budget. The bloke who created an unaffordable cut in National Insurance prior to the election, which he knew the Tories would lose. Utter charlatan.

Yes, but your two big ideas so far have been police and crime commissioners and Brexit. Shall we check on them first?

As the net immigration figures continue to reduce, people will either not care, not notice or even more grimly, suggest the figures are faked. All the while the economy is negatively impacted. A centre left government will never win in this way. You have to make the argument

The line seemingly being taken by Trump and the AFD now is Zelenskyy “doesn’t want” peace. Which when you might criticise him for not accepting concessions or not surrendering - an accusation of not wanting peace just seems utterly absurd. Just increasingly shameful

All fun and games with Katie Zacharia and I’ve little sympathy for her ruining her career. But in Trump and his team, this is who the world is forced to listen to on issues like Iran, Ukraine, AI etc yet this is the due diligence they are capable of or care to do?! A total joke

Badenoch's spokesman also said: “Quite frankly, the people who want to get upset about this should be upset more about the fact that the net zero is costing us £500bn." This is also incorrect. The £487bn CCC estimate was from 2020. Its most recent estimate for net zero puts the total at £110bn.

When you stop to consider why it is that Trump doesn’t ever seem to be over any of the detail of the things he should be, the answer isn’t any more complex than he’s more interested in TV news and nonsense on social media

You can argue about the scale or the effectiveness of Russian interference in Brexit, these are debatable. But to pretend it didn’t happen, to deny Brexit wasn’t in Russia’s interests & just to pretend Russia hasn’t been doing the same or worse since 2016 across the western world is totally deluded

Did Russian interference cause Brexit? No, there were lots of other factors that were bigger drivers Did they attempt to and was it in their interests? Of course Are Russia fighting a fairly permanent information war online to serve Putin’s interests? Again, of course they are. All very obvious

Today let’s remember the UK right’s collective adoration of Donald Trump. They championed him, said he was far better than the alternative, that he would deliver a New Jerusalem while owning the Libs. As with every other major call of the last 20 years, they were totally and unequivocally wrong.

Kemi Badenoch wants to exempt the family home from inheritance tax. But that creates a perverse incentive for elderly people to *upsize* to save IHT. That could double the cost of the policy, and push £100bn+ from savings into housing. A 🧵 on bad tax cuts.

Jim Pickard@pickardje.bsky.social

I'm sorry if this is obvious but the Tory proposal to exempt family homes completely from IHT will lead to 1] pensioners buying the biggest houses they possibly can 2] pensioners refusing to downsize which can only be bad news for younger families trying to buy family homes

Correct. There is a total disconnect as to how we think about in work benefits vs. pensioner benefits and the role of means testing. The WFA changes Labour tried to make were clumsily handled, but compare that reaction to the objectively inequitable childcare thresholds…worlds apart

Rachel Cunliffe@rmcunliffe.bsky.social

We can argue about the perverse incentives of cliff edges or whether £100k is actually that high a salary now. But fundamentally there is a disconnect. Universal benefits for the elderly, regardless of how many millions they may have in assets. No universal benefits for working parents
