The Ebola outbreak in the DRC has now crossed 10,000 cases and is getting close to 5,000 deaths. It is a staggeringly large outbreak and it continues to grow rapidly, with 96 new cases in the last 24 hours alone. #IDsky 🧪 insp.cd/sitrep-n164-...

Has anyone had recent contact with NCBI regarding genome submissions? I've got some that I want released for an accepted paper, but have had zero luck getting a response to requests for immediate release.

🧬 How do bacteria open a molecular ring to start DNA replication? Excited to share our new work in @narjournal.bsky.social @academic.oup.com, where we reveal how the ancestral helicase loader DciA opens the replicative helicase DnaB. @cib-csic.bsky.social 🧵👇 🔗 academic.oup.com/nar/article/...

I am new to tv. I watched downtown abbey b/c highly rated. Halfway through I watched breaking bad until the end. I cannot go back to downtown abbey. Jesus. Idnk what to do. No more tv??? Please help

Both of my kids are gaming before bed w/ (local) friends & (non-local) family. And it's super annoying b/c I have to listen to 2 games & 7 boys talking via speakerphone. But I also feel happy b/c my generation (& the one after me) mostly gamed alone or with strangers. That is definitely not the way

No-one knows how yeast take up DNA in transformations. Really! (Ok, endocytosis is required.) We noticed that "yeast transformation mix" w/ Lithium salts, PEG, carrier DNA ... is exactly the mix that chemists use to make DNA phase separate. Our review paper in Yeast Journal! w/ Alistair Elfick 1/

Incredibly excited about our latest work on R-bodies, 5+ years in the making! These coiled protein ribbons extend into ~10 µm needles in a pH-dependent manner & we caught them springing open inside amoebae after P. aeruginosa gets eaten. (animation: Jegg Yoon)🧵1/2 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

You know what else I am appreciating? Most chapters in this book have >200 carefully documented references. Carefully documented prior to 1990... AKA pre-internet. Before most people even knew what the internet was. Before farming out the integrity of your research to AI was a thing

Some people criticize studying domesticated strains b/c they have lost functionalities important in nature But I think we can learn a lot more studying/comparing domesticated vs undomesticated than we would studying either one alone

I think scientists have a responsibility to not have press releases issued for random papers. Most research isn't meant or ready for general audiences. We should give science enough time to accumulate evidence before we make our problems the society's problems.

Have a friend whose wife recently passed away. I made a lot of food for him not knowing what he even eats. Now I feel like I am going to drop off a bomb he has to deal with instead of helping.

When we knockout yvmA in the 168 background, it overaccumulates extracellular pulcherrimin compared to the wildtype parent on our minimal medium. We can complement the phenotype expressing yvmA in trans. Doesn't really make sense to me that it's an exporter of pulcherriminic acid in 168
