Random election thoughts: Opp are gonna suffer the thing NZF suffered where because they are explicitly on the fence they will piss off around 20% of their voters no matter who they choose to put in power and get thrown out in the next elections. That's the ride theyve bought.

Important point: if you cast a valid vote in 2023, you will be able to vote at this election.* If you've moved and haven't updated an address, it might only count as a party vote, but that's the important one. * assuming you aren't in prison, or some other thing that would disqualify you etc.

Flawless victory. The messages are: * really hot people come to our gym * we like it that way and are not going to change anything * if you're weird about it we will put you on blast Wānaka gym hits back at review complaining about womens' clothing rnz.co.nz/news/communi...

No they are not in the slightest with the 3 to be built to every 1 sold What it does do is add the Rent to Buy string to the bow in affordable housing while still keeping public housing very much on the agenda

Minor parties 🤣 true! I don't recall who said it but NZ has 2 PMs, 2 and a half if you count Luxon

Lefties should be stoked about that poll, which shows the last two weeks of fulmination about gangs has had no practical impact on the numbers Everyone has priced it in. The extent of the strategic error was a foregone week of talking about how much the economy sucks and a Labour candidate pratfall

The real cost of the Kerrin Leoni shitshow is really only going to come due if she wins, so no need to worry about that yet

I’m a West Coast Tasman voter and noticed something interesting about the National Party billboard I pass most often. For weeks it had local candidate Katie Milne alongside Chris Luxon. Last week they replaced with one that just had Katie. Has National realised Luxon is a liability?

Sorry, why do we even need to dissect and have a conversation about "it's good to be interested in what happens in the rest of the world?"

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

do people say this? Coming from a highly literate non western culyure to say the weat imposed literacy is actually a completely unthinkable idea and i say this as an assitant prof of postcolonial studies

One of the annoying effects of AI as a subject in higher ed is how much it brings out the worst of academic-brain. Like, yes, writing is not essential to higher-order thinking; western imperialists imposed literacy as a weapon and deemed cultures lacking alphabetic writing as inferior. It’s true!

Nah fuck this. She did what she did and she gets what she gets. Lie to your party leader about something 100% known to blow up campaigns at such a critical juncture and you should be persona non grata If she wins and takes her seat it will be even more of a shit show

Tony from Welly@tonywelly.bsky.social

What the actual. Chippy, how about spending more time thinking about your campaigning rather than others after you shoved Kerrin Leoni out the plane without a parachute 🤦 #nzpol www.stuff.co.nz/politics/361...

But the fact is that modern liberal, center-left, and left political movements are *insufficiently* transnationalized — especially when compared to the transnational right. We are *behind* the curve. Our leaders are behind the curve.

From the thread re: @overhang-aonz.bsky.social's post about the probability of electorate seat overhangs. I had already assumed it was the case that the government can't change without Opportunity (IIRC there's only 1 poll that has suggested that's possible). This seems to confirm my assumption.

The Overhang@overhang-aonz.bsky.social

That's the focus of the next post but no, not quite. Definitely puts paid to Labour's hopes of governing without Opportunity, but still a solid chance Wong is the kingmaker.

Lula is to my left. Magyar is to my right. And I don’t care in the slightest, because they are the candidates of democracy against autocracy.

The right's line this election is "why should you get to vote if you aren't organised enough to enrol". Next term, if Paul Goldsmith has any say, it'll be, why should you get to vote if you have a conviction. Or aren't a citizen. Or receive a benefit. Or don't own property. Or don't have a job.

Also Thiel acknowledging, "maybe we’re going to lose the soft power war," is akin to the captain of the Titanic saying, "maybe this ship will sink," an hour after hitting the iceberg.
