One of the (many) things that makes me upset when I hear Management taking about AI is when they refer to using it as "unavoidable". Because it absolutely is. I avoid it daily. You've either given up on thinking, or you've been suckered.

this Is why frats use extreme hazing at rush and initiation — to select OUT anyone who would potentially speak out or up. They select for boys who are so desperate to belong that they will high-five their own abuse first, then anything else that follows.

Seriously. I cannot believe that some parents don't teach their sons what is right and wrong regarding women and rape. I thought it was just common sense to teach our children this kind of shit.

Everybody gets hit with Body Stuff, but white women and the thinness thing is just diabolical. Like…they want y’all to look you’ve been surviving off cotton balls soaked in milk and roach carcasses.

A man asked me last night what publishing needs to do for literary fiction to begin appealing to men again. I said, as nicely as I could, that, with over 2,000 books published every Tuesday, of which many would appeal to men, it’s not a publishing problem, it’s a men problem.

I’m seeing posts from people (outside of MN) about how US citizens should carry their passports. And let me say that *inside* MN, we are calmly responding to requests with: “No, I don’t have to show you any documentation.” Because that’s how you protect everyone, regardless of immigration status.

"she doesn't deserve the hate directed at her" is where you should have stopped! No one, including her, is saying she exercised good judgment. The question is whether her entire life needed to fall apart for going to first base with her boss a single time.

It feels like people are desperately seeking reasons to still think she sucks even though the facts don't bear that out. If hundreds of millions of people were saying something false about me and it ruined my life, I would want to respond!

Yeah okay but I don't think going to the New York Times about this is a good strategy for making this problem go away.

I don't know, Aaron. I think we need to take this seriously. In fact, after surveying hundreds of years of history in the past few days, I've written an article assessing the originalist case here: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

"Hurt people hurt people" is sometimes accurate, but "people who have been raised to see themselves as superior to others, have been given immense power over other people's lives, and have never had to face consequences for their actions, hurt people" is a lot more broadly true.

Tangentially: "Drawing attention" has become an ENORMOUS built-in part of working in creative fields, and people who can do that effectively start out waaaaay ahead of people who are actually good at doing the job itself well. (Sometimes people can do both, of course!)

Adam Serwer@adamserwer.bsky.social

i think a (perhaps underappreciated) aspect of this whole situation is the extent to which every elite profession is filled with people who excel at drawing attention and want to be famous more than they want to do the actual job

Beyond sad. The computer does not know why YOUR child, a unique individual human being, is laughing. Wondering why your child does the weird thing children do, which is part of figuring out what brings them joy and who they are as a human being, is one of the true joys of existence.

This is not a surprise to anyone who was closely following this case. It *ought* to be, however, a moment to reflect upon the responsibility (or not) of media outlets that, deliberately or not, led folks to believe that a grant was a serious possibility (which it never was).

I will not support a deal that does nothing to make health care more affordable. We are in a health care emergency. A simple one-year extension of these tax credits would cost less than Donald Trump’s $40 billion bailout for Argentina. A vote for this bill is a mistake.

Same and same. HOLD THE LINE

My family has been without half our income for 40 days. It has been.. very hard. We are willing to feel that pain so people can have health care next year, or to undo these illegal recissions. We are not willing to have been put through this for NOTHING.

I am FURIOUS. We are holding the line. You are getting paid and have the whole country behind you and STILL can’t stop playing “make nice” patty-cake politics with fascists. COWARDS.

The depth of the shame of a country this wealthy and abundant allowing its people to go hungry is impossible to measure. The fact that a handful of people could fix this by paying their fair share of taxes while still remaining obscenely wealthy makes it even worse.
