The only reason I can think of for this news not being absolutely everywhere is that large media orgs don’t want to be seen as putting their thumbs on the scales a week before election day. And that’s cowardly as shit.

It should not be legal to sell cars to the general public that go 130mph. There is no legal purpose for that much speed.

This is why I'm so in favor of accessory commercial units. Just getting people in the US used to **walking** for a cup of coffee or a sandwich in the neighborhood may finally do something to rid Americans of our terminal car brain.

No one can fill this void left by the theft of basic research funding.

David Ho@davidho.bsky.social

Here's a chart showing who funds basic research in the US. It's easy to tell that private funding cannot make up for significant cuts to government funding.

Reminder that not only does our government murder its own people, it cant do it quickly without causing unfathomable pain and suffering. The existence of the death penalty is one of this country’s greatest shames, and we have a LOT.

Trump and Ronny Jackson have a chuckle about the botched execution in Tennessee: "The medication didn't exactly work. He [Jackson] would answer it better than anybody. How does that happen? It shouldn't be very difficult."

This is much more than a question of authenticity. What we see is the weaponisation of AI to discredit non-white intellect. There is an agenda behind this. Just look at the media circus. The witch hunt against Thélyson Orélien was sparked by a "random" X post.

Hetan Shah@hetanshah.bsky.social

France’s most prestigious literary prize has pulled a book from the longlist they think may have been written by AI. This is the start of what is going to become an authenticity nightmare for all concerned: authors, publishers, awards, readers www.ft.com/content/b002...

I have been saying, mostly to myself and to Deans who will listen, that the Humanities is the responsibility of the university to itself. I'll say it again

This is the way many higher ed administrators, institution leaders, and policymakers see it. The very least we can do is cultivate solidarity among our faculty peers so that we don't enable them. It is horrible how many colleagues in other disciplines don't see the toll publish or perish takes on us

This is why I have now embraced my unadulterated, cringe-worthy, faith and belief in the truly unique ability of humans to be humans and to express their humanity in art and self-reflection. And I include all humanities disciplines in the “self-reflection” part.

Tobias Wilson-Bates@phdhurtbrain.bsky.social

My whole career the Humanities seem to have been curled up in a defensive crouch trying to justify our meaning/existence. At times it has even seemed a productive thought exercise, but I think generally whatever body has demanded the justification is not really open to being persuaded of anything.

One of cinema's grand traditions is historical figures brought back to life by actors in giant wigs and prosthetics, done so in a way that makes you think "Wait, who are they supposed to be again?" Please don't take that away from us.
