DAVIDSON: The same people criticizing the military parade are disappointed we're not funding transgender operas in Colombia KEILAR: No, these are your Republican colleagues

The military isn’t being employed to carry out an immigration policy. The immigration policy, and especially the way the administration is choosing to carry it out, is an excuse to call out the military.

Ukraine asked for NATO membership, we said no because of Russian nukes. Ukraine asked for security guarantees, we said no because of Russian nukes. Ukraine asked for long-range weapons, we said no because of Russian nukes. So Ukraine got rid of Russian strategic nuclear bombers

You can trigger your MAGA trolls by reminding them that Russia attacked Ukraine every single day Donald was president the first time. And he did nothing.

I was told that if Trump had been President, Putin would never have dared to wage war on Ukraine.

Welcome to THE daily thread covering all things Ukraine. It's the morning after the night before. The US/Ukraine/Europe all (again) demand Russia accept a ceasefire. But at 2am, Putin said "nyet", AGAIN. This time he proposes a meeting but won't stop the killing. It's Day 1173, let's begin..

Testing a great piece of technology today in the field. This shows video signal from nearby analogue FPV drones. Works well in some kilometres. I think more armies should be using similar devices, in complex with other systems.

The fact that the economy shrank in the first quarter has generated a lot of big headlines. I want to give a more nuanced interpretation, and perhaps make the case that there's less here than meets the eye. And lemme explain why this is a moment that will confound many of our economic statistics.

This. We looked ahead to purchases in the near future, stocked up on nonperishables, got socks and underwear and stuff, have done our best to get as much of a meds stockpile as possible under current rules which are, you know, shrug.

I've heard execs/Wall St analysts take comfort in fact that consumer spending has held up even as consumer views of the economy are tanking. After all, revealed preferences matter! But I wonder how much of that disconnect could be explained by cases like this (from a reader):

There is absolutely zero reason to cave to Trump, as we’ve seen from Columbia his administration will absolutely go back on its word. The only way to stay safe to protect your institution is to stay loud stay visible and stay engaged.

He will escalate and escalate until he is forcibly stopped. He has a personality disorder. We are watching a predatory psychopath in action. It's about the power, the abuse. He enjoys the suffering, and it gives him power. It's like fuel. He needs more.

A plea. Can we stop declaring this a “constitutional crisis?” It’s bigger. It’s a crisis about fundamental American ideals and structures. “Constitutional crisis” makes it sound like an abstract lawyerly crisis It’s bigger.

Either the courts get to decide who is a “violent criminal” or “gang member”, or Donald Trump gets to decide. That choice determines whether we are a Republic governed by laws or an autocracy living under a ruler.

What people must understand is that Putin is only accelerating his attacks on Ukrainian civilians because he is completely confident that Trump has his back. The US could make Russia pay for these attacks, but Putin knows that Trump never will. It’s a sign of (perverse) trust.
