It’s just insane to me that the widespread stereotype is that liberals are the ones who look down on people when JD Vance is this openly contemptuous of the intellect of his constituents

Lot of folks (self included) expressing despair that despite aggressive prosecuting fascists ("doing everything right") Brazil was still going to get Bolsonaro-ed and the fact this guy gtfo-ed as quickly as he did should be a big signal for the AOC DOJ to go *hard* in 2029.

Oh, lord, he's not wrong. When I moved to Minneapolis from Iowa City in 1986, practically the first thing I did was sit down with the Yellow Pages and look at restaurant listings.

Peter@notalawyer.bsky.social

a 25 year old could not comprehend how bad the dining options were in the median American town in 1996

At the time, Iowa City had hamburgers, pizza, an Italian restaurant whose chief claim was cloth tablecloths, a bad Mexican restaurant, two bad Cantonese restaurants, a very expensive steak restaurant, and a very good ice cream parlor (run by the Transcendental Meditation people.)

It is incredibly condescending to assume that "the common man" doesn't clearly distinguish between different types of spaces, and want different aesthetics for those different spaces. Your average Joe doesn't want the Oval Office to look like a chain restaurant, even if they love said restaurant.

SlacktivistFred@slacktivistfred.bsky.social

No no no — if you REALLY want to show that Obama’s mockery of the gaudily gilded Oval Office was elitist, then what you, the red-blooded, white-skinned, Real American common folk need to do is start gluing “golden” gewgaws to every wall of your homes too. THAT would prove your point.

One more quick gloss. The anti-missile defense that Rick Redfern is referring to is the initiative called Star Wars, which was sold to congress as a complete defense against nuclear ICBMs, and which never passed a single test without cheating.

A lot of very strange things came from this initiative, some of them quite good, and all the good things were entirely unintended. Also, it was _shockingly_ expensive, and probably destabilized the markets.

This has been the bait and switch game that the Rs have been playing for my entire adult life. Right now, it's a trans in a bathroom, rather than a bear in the woods. Does this person threaten you? Is there any danger to you in any way?

Nevermind. What matters is how you feel about this. And because you feel a way, that means that you must give them all the power to assuage this fear that they have ginned up.

The thing that actually matters is how you feel about the bear. The structure of the ad also tells you that you should _absolutely_ be afraid of the bear. And based on that fear, which may or may not have any basis in fact, you should now spent a huge amount of money protecting yourself.

The really interesting thing about this ad is that it does not make an argument. It presents a thing to be afraid of (and in case you missed the allusion, the bear in this case is the USSR). It then goes on to say that it doesn't matter, really, if the bear exists, much less if it is dangerous.

The only reason I can think of for this news not being absolutely everywhere is that large media orgs don’t want to be seen as putting their thumbs on the scales a week before election day. And that’s cowardly as shit.

A serial rapist was elected twice as President, a fact we don't reckon with nearly enough. Now one of two major political parties has been molded in his image, run for and by violent sexual abusers who hate women.

The gaslighting is notable, but I'm obsessed by his hand gestures. What is this thing with palms out, fingers splayed and slightly curled as if he were about to grab a pair of boobs? The other gestures look stiff, rehearsed, and slightly mechanical.

It's one of those places you go when your plane just dropped you in a new-to-you area, you're starving, and you don't want to make the effort to find a local place, the same way as Applebees/Friday's/Red Lobster/Olive Garden/etc. Its appeal is that you know exactly what you're getting.

The thing is, you may or may not like McDonald's, but you know what your order is. If your grandmother might not make it, you've been up for 24 hours, and you have spent most of that time crying, you don't want an unfamiliar menu and more decisions. You want enough calories to not faint.
