you can go back to X and I can’t stop you. it is also true that you can’t stop me or anyone else from thinking you’re a fascist-suckling piece of shit for doing so.
"I'm gonna go be on X anyway and you can't stop me," I mean, with one exception, I'm not your dad (and that one exception is even more vehemently against X than I am, so there's that), so do what you want, my dude, as for me, I'm happy not to hang out in the Nazi bar, there are other places to drink

The total eradication of corporate power over social media isn’t even “the moderate position”, it’s a baseline. Thinking Meta, X et al can exist is incoherent with a belief in functioning democracy.
Meta took down the No Kings instagram; TikTok banned the Musk documentary account for supposedly violating its political posting policies. A reminder that platforms are owned by the wealthiest of people, control the means of media distribution, & put their thumbs on the democracy scale as they wish

we are living through a golden age of people with unlimited money and resources trying to convince you that they're just a little guy

In the face of criticism, Tim Flock deploys the old "we shouldn't pause progress" canard — because in Silicon Valley brain poisoned culture, any widget with a microchip in it is automatically "progress" and anyone who doesn't think every such widget is good hates all progress

the problem of course is that Twitter (and Instagram, which is bigger) is so heavily manipulated by its owner that being on there is not going to make you more informed, it's just going to expose you to more right-wing propaganda
Everytime I mention that BlueSky is just not good for non-US global news and discussion, I get piled on. BlueSky is great for many, many reasons, but the rest of the world is still very much on Twitter / X. What is happening in India is *massive*.

Replying to @rob-sheridan.com
“You have to give up your privacy & anonymity online because there’s just nothing we can do about the open web getting bait-and-switched into an unregulated global social experiment that gamifies the worst behaviors of humanity for the profit of two billionaire freaks” is just not a great pitch.

even if it was good policy, this shit is completely ancillary to the goal of actually limiting the power of big tech. Elon Musk has a trillion dollars and is trying to start a global race war, your response to that can’t be “kids should be on their phones less”
Dems' "Project 2029" first major policy proposal: an online child safety plan — narrowing Sec. 230, banning social media for kids under 16, promoting phone-free childhoods and more. Already backed by Cory Booker, Mikie Sherrill, Randi Weingarten + Jonathan Haidt. LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

This weekend DoorDash tweeted about the World Cup but repeatedly tagged T-Pain, as if they were mixing him up with NZ soccer player Tim Payne. T-Pain got in on it too, acting confused. Turns out it was all a "partnership." No ad disclosure on any of the posts. www.theverge.com/news/954145/...
