one of the really useful takeaways from fukuyama's political order books is a clear conceptual understanding of what corruption *is* in its fundamental nature. and the answer... is patronage networks organized on personal connections! corruption is *inherent* in these discretionary systems!

What cities are learning, over and over, is that curb parking is a big net negative for urban society. Don’t charge for it, remove it altogether.

B2 Arch proposes a rental single stair building at ~3 FAR. Lots of 2 and 3 br units. All corner units. Quite dense at ~2.9FSR (vs our 1.6 FSR prototypes)… I’m hearing that ~2.8 fsr is where rental pencils at the moment. Glad to see a project moving ahead. dailyhive.com/vancouver/21...

The biggest factor to building good multifamily housing is allowing multiple single stair buildings to be connected and form the blocks we see in Barcelona and Paris. It is the single biggest factor to success

This is precisely the type of building cities like Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles need to allow and *incentivize* in R1 zones if they ever want to end their respective housing shortages.

Thanks to - allowing single stair buildings - transit-oriented development one can build a 6-storey apt building that fits on 1 single-family lot. *26* units, 6 of them are 3-bed, 18 are 2-bed. https://www.shapeyourcity.ca/2150-w-16-ave #CanadaHousingCrisis

Increases housing supply, reduces car dependence and creates trade jobs. So why is it illegal?

worth emphasizing again: wilson's allies pushed hard to give up all leverage in negotiation and transfer hundreds of millions of dollars to the blazers, citing economic impact that has no basis in reality, during a rolling series of budget crises hitting every level of oregon government

New protected and grade separated bike lanes going in at NW 9th and Johnson for the Broadway redevelopment. Note the cobbled parking and street lamps. #Portland

My first question: why are there six manhole covers within 50 feet? And second, can we use precast elements like Toronto barriers instead of artisanal crafting for every concrete curb?

Hard agree. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s because Meta sued the author and got a gag order that prevents her from saying a single word about her own book. Mark Zuckerberg is a threat to human rights and democracies the world over, including ours. It is vitally important you know how and why.

More for the data wonks. The contributors to the left side of the Portland City Council candidates are typically below age 50. Where more to the right, they are over 50 -- and not even just over, but well over. Olivia be out there repping essentially retirees.

Huge YIMBY win at the CNN Talarico town hall tonight: asked about lowering housing costs, Talarico touts his work on single-stair reform! "Our outdated buildings didn't allow for single-stair housing, which is smaller apartments, smaller condos. It’s a great entry point for homeownership."

Big congrats to our Canadian bike riding friends. Celebrate every little win.

The lack of daylighting in my neighborhood makes the streets unsafe for EVERYBODY! I just saw a panel about Seattle’s efforts to build more bike and scooter parking, and daylighting corners for corrals was a major strategy! I would love to see Portland do more of this.

Portland needs to get its shit together and daylight every intersection. If the City won't do it, we need to. If we are serious about Vision Zero, we need to de-prioritize car storage and prioritize our own lives. www.oregonlive.com/commuting/20...

Correct 🌶️🌶️🌶️ take on housing. Concrete example: if we think rooming houses and micro suites are not adequate housing, the humane response is not to outlaw them but to strive to create conditions where nobody chooses to live in them.

This, in a letter to the Oregonian today from the chief petitioner of the "participatory budgeting" initiative, inadvertently demonstrates why it is such terrible policy. It's NOT "budgeting" if you can't say (or don't understand) where the money comes from.
