so restricting Ukraine's Starlink was Musk's idea, but after Moscow took advantage he became "alarmed about the possibility of adverse consumer reaction in Europe" to the "night of carnage" and denied responsibility I mean, it sounds like typical Elon

It’s simply not possible to do this and do what their voters want - people will still arrive and if you aren’t processing applications (see the IMA) you still need to house people before you deport them so it would mean hotels or large scale sites www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

bbc.co.ukReform would suspend asylum system for parliamentary term if in governmentAll asylum applications would be rejected and existing ones voided, with all claimants marked for deportation.

This is *not* the result of "the success of Mahmood's reforms", but of earlier measures/other factors. Her proposals could make it considerably *worse* in future years. A few other points linked below.. archive.ph/0psJ8

Weren’t the people saying they weren’t terrorists relying on the fact they hadn’t committed or threatened to commit any of the specific actions under the Terrorism Act? Well… Four out of five of boxes ticked now. You may now proceed to proscribing Patriot Platform.

5. After around 30 hours at sea, the dinghy was intercepted by the RNLI and those on board transferred to two lifeboats. Two lifeboat personnel tried to secure the empty dinghy. Thomas yelled abuse and knifed the dinghy to deflate it - with a rescuer still on board.

I’ve come to realise that whilst AI makes dumb mistakes, so does the average person. And I fear the average person also ‘thinks’ as well as AI does. (Ie regurgitating half recalled things they’ve heard, with added randomness)

Most of the shit the US is dealing with is directly as a result of Trump not understanding words like asylum and deficit mean different things in different contexts…

Matt Novak@paleofuture.bsky.social

Trump: “If we stopped Trading with every country that we have a Deficit with, which is most of them, we would make, at least, 1.5 Trillion Dollars a year. The word ‘Deficit’ is nothing more than a fancy word for LOSS.”

I was asked "What do other countries do about big money in politics?" Canada is a useful case study as their parliamentary system closely mirrors the UK's (for obvious reasons) - except they've totally clamped down on mega-donations.

Josiah Mortimer@josiahmortimer.bsky.social

Canada has a total ban on company/corporate donations. Only individuals who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents can make contributions and it's capped at $1,750 a year. They still have functioning parties and the sky hasn't fallen in. Quite the opposite... www.elections.ca/content.aspx...

Question of the day! What is the funniest single line in Simpsons history?

Where’s the red for Bruno? How’s kicking someone up the arse while they’re on the floor any different to pushing someone away with your feet into their stomach? #manchsterderby

Genuinely don’t think that was Foden lashing out. He was on his back feet in the air and just trying to get up. If you watch the replay he’s not even looking towards Bruno. I can see what it looks like but it’s 90% Bruno’s reaction that earns the red.

Based on the fact that this weekend one friend impulse purchased a second hand EV for £10k (she doesn’t know what make or model, it’s Chinese) & two other female friends have asked for advice on £10-15k second hand and new EVs (Dacia Spring etc), there’s a huge market for super cheap EV second cars.

Crypto billionaire. Convicted in the US. Pardoned by Trump. Trashing our democracy by buying Reform. Does anyone think this is to improve our NHS, our schools, our public services…? Of course it fucking isn’t. It’s to make Ben Delo and Farage richer. That’s it. That’s all they care about.

🚨 BREAKING: Crypto billionaire Ben Delo has donated £36m to Reform UK - the biggest ever donation to a UK political party

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei announced today that the AI firm’s previously-unannounced flagship model “was British this time.” Amodei went on to say “this one turned out British this time”, explaining: “It just got more British during training. So watch out for that.”

It even says inspired by Starship Troopers uniforms, which was a parody of fascism. So they’ve literally based it on a deliberately fascist uniform.

They've left the sea, and several hundred more have broken through police lines. Mob now surrounding and yelling at coaches carrying asylum seekers, while police try (with mixed success) to block signal for Thomas's livestream.

This might be my fault - I told them on Facebook they can “get in the sea”… Guess they took it literally! 🙃

Extreme right-wing protesters are in a stand-off with the RNLI in Portsmouth. The group, led by Danny Tommo, are waist-deep in the sea and threatening to go "under the water" if police try to arrest them. Six lifeboats monitoring. Volunteer rescuers giving up their evening for this.

Paul Lomax reposted

Fundamentally, this should not have happened given that Tommo should have already been arrested for his part in the last stunt.

Whether it's politics, social media, the environment or countless other issues, there's intense debate over the need for new policies and legislation when so often what is required is simply the proper enforcement of existing rules and regulations.

Nothing dictatorial about that at all

Farage tells his conference that if the House of Lords frustrates a majority Reform government, he will flood the upper house with peers to gain a majority, or hold a referendum to sweep them away; and if the judiciary frustrate them, they will “look at how judicial appointments work”. Hmm…
