Incredible how folks like Yglesias manage to be so respected while consistently wrong about just about everything. (See also: Ezra Klein, Simon Jenkins.)

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

The lessons from Brazil and Serbia? Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right. Don't appease. Don't triangulate. Don't grovel. Don't say they have "legitimate concerns". Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.

Here's an idea for editors, let's do a little roleplay. Writer: "I have a contrarian take!" Editor: "Is it fucking stupid?" Writer: "Well yes, but it bucks the consensus. No one else is saying it." Editor: "Is that because the consensus is correct?" Writer: "... yes but... " <hang up>

Different countries, different elections. But a year that has seen Orbán, Bolsonaro and Vučić defeated (and the GOP likely routed at the midterms next week) doesn't exactly fit the narrative of a relentless rightwards shift. Good candidates, campaigns, movements can still win.

Maybe being White House press secretary is like jury service. A letter arrives, and you don't really have a choice in the matter, but if you just turn up and do what they want then you won't be kept there for very long.

Reminder that they also did this to Zack Polanski during the Holborn & St. Pancras by-election. Can't help but wonder that was a test run for future elections, such as the one that's just taken place in Brazil

While the election result in #Brazil is obviously good news, we should remember that countless American wannabe-fascists poured $billions into achieving the opposite result and now have nothing to show for it, so it's not just good news, but also objectively hilarious.

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

To half of you, congratulations on your car clock suddenly being correct. To the other half, commiserations on your car clock being wrong for the next six months.

God knows how many times he's bragged about taking the MoCA test while apparently oblivious to what it is. But I think this clip is notable because he reveals that there's a doctor following him around.

In one video, a fascist politician was threatening a group of Indigenous people that he would withdraw their funding if they didn't vote for Bolsonaro. One of them replied, so what. We won't vote for you. You don't fund us anyway. Iconic. X

The organising by Lula's voters in Brazil right now is astonishing. They still might not win but they've put millions on the street and they have shifted the polls back to a tie -despite, in a friend's words, fighting "everyone -Trump, Meta, legacy media, the rich, betting companies, evangelicals".

Putting aside the vile things that Burchill regularly writes for money, if her impulse to be a contrarian is so powerful that it makes her credulous enough to embrace the world's crudest flim-flam artist, why should anyone take anything she says seriously ever again?

A real writer wouldn't blame his editor. Instead he should shake his head, sigh and say "once again, my less attentive readers are missing the larger point I was making" without clarifying in any way.

I’m sorry to have to be the bad guy here but we need to recognize that we live in a compressed air thrusters world now. If you’re not finding ways to teach the critical use of compressed air thrusters in your classroom, you’re setting your students up to fail when you could be setting them up to fly

Oh no, and it had such a bright future ahead.
