It's always been like this, and it's because the elites are essentially self-preserving, and civility has always been the tool by which non-elites are condemned.
I will never understand how American elites managed to convince themselves that uncivil debate — not fascism, not impunity and not widespread indifference to facts — is the defining problem of our time. www.nytimes.com/2025/08/26/o...

Sharon’s writing is my appointment television. Click through and consider supporting her! (In defense of this praise arriving three days late, my basement was flooded out on Saturday, and tonight, this has reminded me how much I love my job despite everything literally falling apart around us.)
I wrote about my confusing relationship with sight-reading (featuring video of me playing the main theme from Spirited Away)

There have been some very scathing dissents over the years, but I can't think of one where the accusation is so bluntly made that the majority is a bunch of partisan hacks who are politically subservient to a president.
May this portion of the dissent by Ketanji Brown Jackson haunt John Roberts forever and be the final word on his tenure as Chief Justice.

David Roberts Someone once said, “Fascism is a counterrevolution against a revolution that never happened.” What fascists do is try to convince this reactionary base that they’re in danger, that they’re under dire threat from the liberals and the queers and the professors.
We have a new Q&A w/ @volts.wtf coming soon & it's wild how well our previous one from June '24 holds up "We have this lying, abusive, obviously nutbag figure, and we can’t acknowledge to ourselves what’s happening. The political commentariat is trying so hard to process this into a normal thing."

You know how people called women hysterical for predicting the right wing would take down Roe v. Wade (which they've done) and then attack access to birth control (which they're doing)? Hear me when I say that women's very right to vote is next. www.npr.org/2025/08/09/n...

this thread is such a great example of this tendency. instead of just arguing against the thing you don't like ("I think we should be allowed to drive over the speed limit") making up a bunch of other objections that you don't actually believe but you think sound more sympathetic
Just say ‘I like driving over the speed limit’ why debase yourself like this

This is the platonic ideal of liberal policymaking: incontrovertibly correct, insane number of lives saved and overall QoL improvement, polls like dogshit and would be electoral suicide.
My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area. (15 in Manhattan btw)

Everything about this story is horrific: 1. The student never mentions Jews 2. The university is going to expel a student for criticizing a country over genocide 3. A Republican congressman is taking credit and implying the student is a Muslim terrorist 4. The U.S. Justice Department is involved
The DOJ says it will investigate a US citizen for saying “fuck Isr**l” to a guy in an IDF shirt. Absolutely the most anti-free speech admin of my lifetime. Probably since the Red Scare, if not earlier.

One of the most dangerous tropes in political media is how the only Jewish voices that matter are the most right-wing ones, hence the ease with which reporters assumed Jews are scared of Mamdani. (This is also how Jewish protestors were erased from the discourse about antisemitism on campuses.)
it’s almost like all the attacks calling Mamdani antisemitic were vapid bad faith bullshit created by politicians with no policy plan other than smashing the “scary muslim” button

Not only that, but their fiendish plan depended on making sure that Epstein be arrested in Trump's first term and then kill himself in a federal prison (again, while Trump was in charge) so he couldn't refute the Democratic forgeries ...
So if I understand the Trump strategy correctly, they want their base to buy that Obama, Comey, and (somehow) Hillary Clinton deviously placed his name into the casefiles about his best friend Jeffrey Epstein, but then never breathed a word about it through 3 elections? Is that right?
