Fwiw: it is possible to opt out of Meta training data, I just did it. Go to Privacy Center, find the blue link "object" in the wall of text about AI. You have to give your reasons, not just toggle a switch, but I did immediately get an email confirming that my choice would be respected.

(Do I trust that promise? I mean, obviously not. Planning my exit from Meta platforms anyway, for all the reasons. Lodging this objection still feels worthwhile.)

Thirty years ago I was on a high-volume high-aggro mailing list, and when someone lost it like this the tradition was for someone to take the text of the message, alphabetize it, paste it into a reply, and say “these words didn’t appear to be in any particular order so I alphabetized them for you”

Yep. My teen is *so* quick to spot the slop, and every time I say "oh really I don't think you can be sure", she shows me all the tells. The amazing part is just that while the tells are absolutely there, she doesn't need to inspect for them, she can just see it instantly.

overheard in a gift shop today where there were blatantly AI generated Halloween illustrations, an older woman went "ohh how cute!" and the teenager with her, So Done, goes "I know you have a hard time telling, but that is AI, it's ugly, and I'm sick of it" I wanted to throw that teen a parade

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

I can't actually claim this, because I had to try it out for work, once. But never again.

I literally don’t know a single woman who hasn’t been raped, stalked, groped, harassed, or sexually violated in some way at some point in their life. If you choose to doubt and dox survivors, just know every woman in your life is disgusted by you.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

Ok I have a question for the Americans. TV characters are constantly saying "The truth is" or "Here's the thing." CONSTANTLY. It really throws me out of the scene bc it feels so scripted - it's not something I hear much off screen. But is it the US equivalent of "to be perfectly honest with you"?

Ie is this a scriptwriter tic, or an actual commonplace tic? Maybe it's not actually contrived. Maybe it's just another grating verbal habit.

I have received an email from an AI asking to write about borders for my newsletter, and it is giving me a genuine insight into how AI psychosis happens. it is so difficult not to understand this as "an actual sentient being addressing me" even though it has been entirely honest about being an AI

The best meetings are the ones where one pet shows up and then suddenly everyone is introducing their own pets. Huge vibe improvement

I need to make something very, very clear. If we are in a Zoom interview and your pet interrupts, you never EVER have to apologize. Instead, please introduce them so I can greet them properly. Thank you for your time.

this is just rhetoricity again. the robot has rhetoricity, because it can "communicate and be received as a valid communicator". the racially-minoritized, neurodivergent, etc human cannot, and so is not a valid speaking subject. human subjects are displaced by LLMs.

Here is another example of *automated cryptogyny*: LLM removed my co-authors, *three of whom were women*. Instead, LLM states I published the paper with a *man* with whom I co-authored *other* papers. 🧵

Oh, the irony of people using generative AI to "summarise" my papers 🫠 (here the real paper: link.springer.com/article/10.1...)

I was enthralled by office swivel chairs when I was little. I thought that "unwinding at the end of a day" meant they spun people around backwards the same number of times people spun forwards during the day.

"why do recipes always say to melt chocolate in a double boiler, how stupid do you have to be to burn the cho- oh." In my defence I have never done that before and I am very. Very. Very tired.

Look Peter Thiel already said in 2009 that democracy is incompatible with capitalism and that may be the one time he was ever right

Greg Pak@gregpak.net

I do not believe democracy is compatible with billionaires being able to spend unlimited amounts of money on politics.

So. What have I found out about AI use across 100 students • No AI use in essays • GAI use in 4% of exams: In 2nd years, both exam Qs In 3rd years, the second Q (when weaker students give up) • Another 4% used it to structure their exam answers, but then reading takes over 92% are not using it 👍🏼
