the thing that has changed big time is most of the media companies are owned by straight up MAGA chuds doing outright propaganda. the NYT is one of the few that has old fashioned MSM brain bsky.app/profile/pope...

I just logged on to the New York Times and it's no where above the fold. It's not on the virtual front page at all, although cheesecake factory gate still is.

There is truly nothing you could do to make fun of the NYT covering the Obama Cheesecake Factory quip instead of Trump being accused of rape. It’s completely beyond parody.

Yes and also this sort of 'uniparty' nonsense feels so hollow deployed in the midst of a national stove-touching. It turns out the difference between a 'milquetoast corporate Democrat' and Trump was really big! President Harris would not be driving trans soldiers out of the military!

youtubers, streamers, podcasters, etc are always on this beat bc they don't know how anything works & know that if they say something like this, their audiences will lap it up now & also 3 years later when they point to total gay commie revolution not happening and go "see? i was right!"

Q: Were Medicare and Medicaid mistakes? Vivek Ramaswamy: I believe they were. I think the evidence would show that it has harmed the very people that it was created to actually help

Sometimes I have an intrusive thought hoping for The One Horrible Disaster to happen in the hopes it will snap people to their senses. This is stupid of me because if the pandemic and insurrection have taught us anything, it is that people do not learn from horrible disasters. People just die.

as a corollary to my other thread about how, yes, everyone is using LLMs for coding now: even putting aside ethical questions, this showcases the biggest downside - people are just throwing shit out the door while barely paying attention to what they've generated

yeah a lot of this debate boils down to this: "shut up, nerd, why are you making me think about this obnoxious nerd stuff, everyone already knows the real answer" the problem is that the track record of the people saying "shut up, nerd, we already know this" is, historically, pretttttttty bad

The main difference I’ve noticed between West Coast NIMBYs and East Coast NIMBYs is that the former will tell you that they’re worried about gentrification, overpopulation and out of control capitalism, and the latter will just say the thing.

Sam@samd.bsky.social

Long Island right-NIMBYs are genuinely some of the worst people on earth. they’ll beg for a government handout in the form of NIMBY policies that artificially inflate the value of their homes, and then turn around and say that simply making it legal to build apartments is “charity” or something

Pretty much all of modern warfare is Weaponized Math. The artillery officer can end your existence with a protractor.

Brandon Friedman@brandonfriedman.bsky.social

Pete is lost in terms of modern war. I use the example of this outgunned Ukrainian army officer who successfully terrorized a Russian unit for weeks because she "did the math." At the time, someone commented, "yeah, in combat, 'I did the math' beats 'I can do 100 pushups' every time."

I have the same position on AI that I have on literally every other technology: It has no moral dimension of its own outside who controls it, right now it's overwhelmingly controlled by people who're evil to the degree they don't deserve to exist. That needs to be corrected. Until it is? 🤷‍♂️

William B. Fuckley@opinionhaver.bsky.social

A lot of this shit, like every query draining a lake, is akin to a religious belief at this point and they’re not gonna be reasoned out of position they weren’t reasoned into. We have two flavors of AI psychosis now basically.

The idea that Nancy Pelosi supports the Iran War is an absurd, dangerous characterization. People like Ken think all of you are idiots.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

this seems perhaps deceptively clipped and also there is absolutely no way this should be the tenor of any component of any Democrat’s statement about the Iran War

Scott Lemieux@lemieuxlgm.bsky.social

I can't stand this kind of "I'm not saying I want the Republican to win, I'm just saying I want the Democrat to lose" evasive non-sequitur, but it's also a dispositive tell that the person making the argument knows perfectly well that they're advocating an indefensible position
