I would take more seriously the people promoting the idea of AI consciousness if they first materially grappled with the (much more obvious) consciousness of animals and how that affects our moral obligations to them.

First-past-the-post is a democratic abomination. It's an insane way to hold elections and the politicians who continually refuse to get rid of it are selfish assholes. Every single one of them.

Please try to reclaim your precious precious attention, at all costs. Do puzzles. Take walks without a phone. Dear god, try to read, almost anything that isn’t a manifesto will really do. You are going to need your brain.

I resigned from ExxonMobil today. I spent the last three years doing fossil fuel extraction research at both BP and ExxonMobil. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing to maximize extraction while the window to act closes, and gambling with our lives. More below.

I like this notetaking example. it is a good case of how gender works. Notetaking has never been about producing a transcript. It is a bureaucratic skill in the 20th c. organixarion because it is SENSEMAKING. Those women socialized to take notes? They have been doing men’s metacognition for them

This is how the BBC was reporting on Jason Arday two days ago

Charlotte Lydia Riley@lottelydia.bsky.social

Quite weird to hear BBC News describe Jason Arday as “the black professor accused of plagiarism”. Is every story about a white professor going to include the relevant adjective?

"Come to Canada, we're a stable, serious, non-politicized place to do science." (And then we name the program after an overt partisan) A future government looking to cut research funding now gets to frame it as scrubbing Liberal branding. Why hand them that? OK, soapbox put away now.

Deb Wright, author of Future Sea, started the 100x50 movement. Given the literal language of UNCLOS, she proposes we flip the script: instead of exploiting 70% of the ocean, we protect 100% and create designated commercial areas instead of marine protected areas 💖 what do you think?

I think a lot about how many fields are built on this kind of reciprocity (I peer review things because someone did it for me, & someday I will need reviews, etc) & the current hellscape means we start counting the cost for fear of being left hollowed out. Which sucks.
