A friendly reminder for the well meaning people I see making this mistake: If you want to refer to the community of Somali-Americans use Somali, the proper term, and not "Somalians". Anyone from Minnesota hears "Somalians" and braces themselves for something racist.

Canada is refusing to issue ISBNs to books primarily generated with AI. This illustrates both the urgency of the problem of the growing flood of slop books, and also the toothlessness of addressing it on the honor system without there also being consequences for lying

I somewhat recently re-read her diary. Along with the verifiable evidence of it being legitimate, there is no doubt in my mind that it was written by a 12-14 year old girl, because she is extremely self-absorbed and hates her mother. A hoax would be more focused on what's going on outside.

Technology enthusiasts severely overestimate the average person’s desire or willingness or capacity to build and use AI agents. I understand some work roles that could mandate or encourage it but that is no way a tech revolution. Agents are best for structured, clearly delineated tasks.

bad news everyone. i wrote a program in qbasic that was just 10 KILL ALL HUMANS 20 GOTO 10 which means we are all going to die. does anyone want to give me 7 billion dollars

I was a smartphone resister and didn't get one for a long time, and I also knew at the time that I was in the minority and was a weirdo

as long as we're rewriting the past to make AI not look like a scam, I've seen AI people insist that actually people were also against smartphones and no one wanted them and companies had to force users to get them, and uh, I was there. None of that is true.

Observations while driving around southern Minnesota yesterday: If yard signs are an indication of anything, I saw more Jake Johnson signs than Brad Finstad signs. Although there were definitely Republican yards, I only saw one Lisa Demuth sign.

I’m using my executive authority to ban nonferrous mining in the Boundary Waters.    As far as my administration is concerned, the fight for the future of the Boundary Waters is over. The verdict is in. The decision is made. We will protect this place.

National records and testimony from the NCAA indicate there are fewer than 10 transgender student-athletes competing across more than 556,000 overall college athletes - less than 0.002% of all college athletes. There are 316,189 men. I think you need to look at the sums before saying something dumb.

Got a new google scholar notification, so I go check and find this very cool poem by Wang Jibing 王计兵, the recent Lu Xun prize winner, prefacing a PhD thesis on women migrant workers and the gig economy PhD students in all disciplines: more poems in theses please, we love to see them! ✨💫

A side effect of being old, for me, is NGAF if I sound old. Like why is that a thing I should care about? I have joint pain and shit.

I'm actually fine with sounding old.

Hey, fellas, before you write that white hot take about how rape is such a tricky thing and, I mean, who can really say what happened and, you know, maybe we should not be too judgmental, I'd like to remind you that instead you can simply shut the fuck up.

Our diversity is our strength. (Seriously, there are wealth of delicious cuisines represented here)

A massive Georgia data center drained nearly 30 million gallons of water, sparking outrage among local residents asked to conserve water during a drought. Residents of Fayetteville, Georgia, first noticed something was wrong when their home water pressure mysteriously plummeted.
