NEW: On Oct 20, Japan will launch its most audacious space mission. It’s hoping to fly to Mars, land twice (!) on Phobos (“fear”), steal pieces of that alien moon, and bring ‘em home. That’s right: to pull of this heist, Japan must confront fear itself. @science.org www.science.org/content/arti...

My kid has started a Letterboxd list called Killer Sweaters for films where the killer wears a great sweater and they've asked me to throw it out to Bluesky for more because "that's the kind of thing those weirdos like to do"

did you know that we get the word "cockamamie" from a bastardization of a term ("decalcomania") for a period in the 1930s after temporary tattoos were invented by the French and kids were running around putting them on fucking everything?! 🐦🐦🐦

I love this exercise. “Put the peanut butter on the bread.” Seeing someone plop an entire jar of peanut butter onto an unopened loaf of bread is always hilarious. Even better if the bread is not sliced.

One of the exercises I’ve seen to illustrate this is to have kids in intro programming classes tell the teacher how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and the teacher follows their instructions literally.

This news is important because all the fucks out there actively attempting to wreck the world want you to think that the work is hopeless and just mitigating the worst case scenario. It's not. Fucking keep going.

Just helping with editing here. These bots aren’t sentient. They’re doing what they’re programmed to do. OpenAI, a private company supposedly bound by laws, committed federal crimes.

The very cool thing about this is that there are some kinds of brain cells we weren't able to grow before because we didn't understand they were different, and now that we've figured out that they are different, we can grow them.
