This is literally the end of the rule of law. If a President can pardon people committing crimes on his behalf - and the Supreme Court says he himself can't be prosecuted for crimes committed as part of his job - then the government becomes a lawless entity able to violate our rights without limit.

On Monday this stag was hounded to exhaustion by the Quantock Staghounds before being shot. Dogs, riders, and even quads hunted the animal, hounding him for three hours until he could move no more. Then the gunman approached and finished him off. 1/3

I have heard rumours that Richard Tice heads a company called Britain Means Business, that has no employees and sells no products but takes in very large donations from foreign based people and forwards them to Reform UK Ltd. I can't believe this is true, but if it is it should bring down Reform.

Why don't the Tories suggest doing something about this rather than attacking the poorest and most vulnerable? It couldn't be anything to do with the Tories being tax avoiders, could it?

Marcus Chown@marcuschown.bsky.social

Every year, HMRC, by its own estimates, fails to collect 46.8 billion of tax. See webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ukgwa/202606... How about hiring more people to retrieve this avoided tax before suggesting funding defence by cutting welfare to the poorest and most vulnerable? Just saying.

Laughably, stag hunts claim they chase deer for "research and observation", a loophole in the Hunting Act. Two hounds are allowed, so they also run relays of hounds in twos, backed by quad bikes, until the stag collapses and is shot. Defra must close every exemption, not one.

I'm not sure folks have realized just how crazy the second half of 2026 and 2027 will be for global temperatures – on the back of a record-smashing El Niño event. Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.

When I discuss huge systemic issues, people say "but what I can I do?" When I mention something meaningful you can do immediately, people say (as the replies here show) "but what's the point, in the face of the huge systemic issues?" There are, it seems, plenty of people who want to be helpless.

It's a point I've been trying to make for a long time: there is no good way to meet even 10% of current demand for animal products. They trash the living world, whichever way you do it. If you want to reduce your impact, switch to a plant-based diet. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

And there’s more… More lies, more dodgy deals and denials.. Farage has bought 4 houses for cash since 2020 - the year we left the EU. And declared only 2 of them. Come on people. The man’s a hot mess of corruption, racism, national security threat and greed. Let’s bin him off.

Sorry to re-up this, but the media silence on the massive, country-changing shift towards arbitrary justice and authoritarianism is almost the most astonishing aspect of the case. The new dispensation is being normalised even as it's happening. Please spread it far and wide. We need to know. Thanks

Both the government and the Court of Appeal now treat protesters as terrorists and terrorists as protesters. It's hard to accept that a "Labour" government is imposing rightwing authoritarianism on the UK, but please read this column to see what's happening.+🧵 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

There’s absolutely no reason for any media outlet to give Farage, or that Goodwin rat, any airtime whatsoever to turn that tragedy into their own racist horrorshow. It’s against the family’s explicit wishes and Farage must not get to swan in and out of studios as he sees fit. Christ what a disgrace.

Lots of noise about Israel, but absolutely nothing is being done as usual. The EU and UK could cancel their Free Trade agreements with Israel, as their citizens want them to. The blow to Israel would be massive, and the EU/UK wouldn't even notice.
