I know someone who lived out of his car in grad school at a public university in California — not because it was impossible to afford housing but because its just a smart financial decision in a world where the school has plentiful parking spots given away at nominal cost but scarce housing.

Eddy Conroy@econroy.bsky.social

The article is rightly more nuanced than this post. The main driver of that headline figure is housing. Yes tuition is a challenge, but it’s not what has pushed cost of attendance over $50k.

I am Officially Not Autistic, but I *did* study linguistics and... did you know there's an entire academic discipline devoted to this? It's called "pragmatics", you can do a phd in "communicating with neurotypicals" if that's your inclination.

ellie lockhart (she/they)@eleanor.lockhart.contact

autistic people can in fact learn social skills, including eye contact, small talk, and polite hedging/subtext doing activities like speech and theater is how I learned this. it's harder if you start when you're older but it absolutely is possible and it is not a thing autistic people "can't do."

Sure, we should, if we can (many cannot). But as I keep pointing out, the government itself is making no provision at all. No stockpiles, no back-up, no alternative sources. It's individuating the response to a collective problem, and that never ends well. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

I'm really gesellschaft-headed about 99.9% of things, but this was an area where it went wrong. There should be no outwardly legible process to determine who can live where

[mandolin left-hand technique is similar enough to give a decent head start, but that was self-taught too. You can learn a musical instrument! you should think about doing it.]

while every generation thinks they're better than the previous one, parenting has advanced in leaps and bounds by numerous objective metrics for example, it is far less common today for parents to hit their kids than it was when I was a kid. this is unequivocally a good development

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Often I ask myself, "who is the audience for this?". And all too often I reply, "troubled loners".

flyingrodent@flyingrodent.bsky.social

Britain’s top-selling far right politics magazine here telling its audience that broadcasters, officials and political leaders are plotting to kill them and their loved ones, and are concealing their intentions. What conclusions does Dougie here want readers to draw about What Must Now Be Done?

So because I'm actually writing it myself rather than LLMing it, I realised that _Tearmoon Empire_ structurally resembles _Blackadder_ and now I have to start again. These are only supposed to be two-paragraph pocket reviews, but I'm learning so much from them. Do the writing, do it yourself.

[specifically, it's the threefold combination of: a: cringe comedy b: farce c: moral didacticism. There are detail differences so I think it's convergent evolution rather than emulation, but it's still pretty striking.]

It really is blackpilling to read about attempts to implement international practice in this country because it always gets gummed up by general American dysfunction.

Last year, we did a chinese theme and I had steamed dumplings for adults: year before it was mad science and I'd do prawn crackers in a chemistry beaker over a gas stove. 'cause I couldn't get a bunsen burner hooked up. Booze too if it hasn't run out.

This is directly the wrong way round - you wouldn't expect any better if BRS, but an organisation willing to do this is not fit and proper to have a public broadcasting licence

stranger@strangerous.bsky.social

Absolutely shameless for BRS to be using right wing tabloid media 2GB to launch a public PR offensive, trashing court evidence and attacking colleagues who refused to abide by his “code" of silence. This won’t help BRS one bit. Prosecutors will be all over it. #auspol

Lovely demonstration of Ricardo's law of rents [@dsquareddigest.bsky.social]; the con is also barely profitable because of the same dynamic with venue costs, and the venue in turn has to pay the land costs either in rent or as loans to pay the previous owner. Only the landowner makes real money.

Many decades ago in the worst case of esprit d'escalier ever after from visiting someone at Essex Uni I got a lift to one of the eastern Central Line stations, then asked for a ticket to Amersham. The bloke asked me for my passport and after I walked away I remembered I had it my pocket

government deficits caused Egypt to invade Israel in 1973 and government deficits caused Russia to invade Ukraine in 2020. government deficits caused the USA to attack Iran this year, when will people stop denying that deficits cause inflation.

The reason I have two bookshelves full of comps behind my desk is because the acoustics in that room needed dampening, like at first I would laugh while I was working and the echo kinda hurt my ears and I had to Google what to do about it. What do people without books even do, hang shit up

So in that sense, the politics of the Zionist left are similar to those of social democratic parties in Europe: one can be a minority and be welcome, but one can't represent the interest of the minority to the party, unlike in the US Democratic Party or the Liberal Party of Canada.
