I know we all love to be macho about this but here is your permission not to have to: If you’re cold, you can turn on the heat. My heat is on. It’s fine

Here’s an article we released yesterday on the prediction markets, anticipating their role in election rumors. bsky.app/profile/kate...

Our election research team put out an article today explaining how the prediction markets (e.g. Kalshi, Polymarket) — and social media posts featuring visualizations from those platforms — may feed election rumors & conspiracy theories around the U.S. midterms: uwcip.substack.com/p/what-to-kn...

One of my friends at the mosque says everyone there did early voting because it seemed less dangerous. I can't say he was wrong, but it was heartbreaking.

David Brauer@dbrauer.net

Doing a little early-voting precinct-by-precinct # crunching. Will dump it on you tomorrow. But my early conclusion is: the lower-income south side wards, especially Ward 6 & Ward 9, are doing a bang-up job early voting. Precincts with Somali-Minnesotans already voted 2x last midterm’s early vote.

I think we underestimate the appeal of antigambling politics because every problem gambler is surrounded by 3-10 people who are absolutely sick of their shit.

Lula won in part by banning online gambling

I'm just going to take you guys through my new sewing room, because I want everyone to see it. Let me start with the sink. It's cute. I like it. #Sewing #DIY

Huh. There are a lot of confounding variables (like I'm less stressed when I earn money) but I think going on teeny tiny doses of blood pressure meds has reduced my number of migraines.

In 2024, Lakeshore Care submitted an application for what was called a emergency shelter w/ 24 beds for those recovering from illness/medical procedures. It faced strong opposition with public safety concerns and drug use. Application was withdrawn. Instead, the building will now just sell drugs.

Get your pumpkin carving kit *now* before it's later tonight and you convince yourself a steak knife will work just fine, but it won't and you'll be posting on Bluesky saying, "I just lacerated myself carving a pumpkin. CPSC is going to be so disappointed in me :( "

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

I really like the point made here: Dems should be making a public case right now for novel tactics like defunding Trump's corrupt prosecutions, to make them more intelligible later:

Nicholas Grossman@nicholasgrossman.bsky.social

Democrats laying the groundwork for real opposition, with Congress asserting budget authority to stand against Trump abuses and rights violations. Will have to overcome cries that not passing Trump's budget is irresponsible. But it's the opposite. And starting now makes that hurdle easier to clear.

Yesterday, I didn’t get dressed or do anything very productive. I had a nap. I read a bit. I made like 8 dresses in Dressmaker. Megan and I watched a bunch of Lower Decks. It was great. Looming on the horizon is the sprint from Halloween to Kubecon to The Holidays, but yesterday, I loafed.

I think it’s important to honor and illuminate those days, too, otherwise everyone thinks that productivity is the default state. But it’s an oscillation. Some days lots of stuff, some days cookie dough and cartoons.

What do you think the overlap is of Minnesotans who swell with pride at local organizing against ICE and the people who want a partner at Trump's favorite law firm to be the next Hennepin County Attorney?

Oh, this is a loss. I really rely on ROW to keep me from losing any connection to the non-American experience.

Haven’t seen anyone point out that, for the Ghost Rider announcement, Ryan Gosling was dressed like James Dean in Rebel Without A Cause (a movie where James Dean does not ride a motorcycle), which also means Gosling was dressed as Philip J. Fry.

I love a good random conversation about movies. Blew someone's mind by saying there's actors who are good at Batman and some who are good Bruce Waynes but not that often you find one who's both. Keaton, good Batman. Kilmer, good Wayne Bale, better Batman ok Wayne Clooney, probably Wayne¹

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

What is true is that this was a conflict—and make no mistake, this was a conflict; this was a protracted battle in a hybrid war, more than anything—that was largely fought by large numbers of people laboriously working to unfuck the nation's informational environment.

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

We won not only against Bolsonaro, but against the full force of the USian's Big Techs, Meta, CIA, Trump, the Brazilian right-wing elites, the billionaires' press and more.

This is really the thing. If saying nice things about your child is hard, you need to practice. By saying nice things about your child. To your child. I have not always been confident in how others see me. But I’ve always had a good self-image, in part because my mother did this. Often.

wellstone was the first politician i ever got to volunteer for. people love to quote “we all do better when we all do better” but i try to live by this one: “If we don't fight hard enough for the things we stand for, at some point we have to recognize that we don't really stand for them.”

Twenty-four years ago today, on October 25, 2002, Minnesota lost Senator Paul Wellstone. We also lost his wife, Sheila, and their daughter, Marcia. Campaign staffers. Today, take moment to honor Wellstone's amazing legacy.

When Democrats do well this fall, we’re going to see a lot of “strategists” trying to take credit for their approach. The trans panic people have been nothing but a drag on Democratic momentum and they need to fuck off into the sun

In their quest for velocity, managers identified a critical bottleneck: themselves. Now they are automating away the very work of leadership - determining what is most valuable to work on, and aligning everyone around those goals. The result: worse outcomes, delivered faster than ever before.
