This will reduce potential sortie capacity something like 40% and put unexpected cycling strain on reactors which were not designed for it. Basically indistinguishable from literal sabotage, if you care about such things as readiness or reliability or lethality or whatever

Trump captured 61% to 65% of the veteran vote in 2024, matching the 60% he secured in 2020. Trump has repeatedly downsized the VA. Estimates of Active-Duty, Guardsmen, and Reservists ranged from 40-50%. So, yea, sorry for those who didn’t, but large swaths apparently wanted all this…

At a certain point one begins to wonder if he isn't pulling some kind of a The Producers type scheme, but with an entire country. Like, even from the most cynical strategic viewpoint, the amount by which he has damaged the US's ability to like... do ANYTHING is staggering.

My brother in law just had a tornado pop up out of the blue with no advanced warning from the National Weather Service. House across the street was decimated… apparently the hundreds of meteorologists and radar technicians they fired haven’t been re-hired yet. So, yea, consequential presidency.

Our diplomatic standing is shot, our economy is in tatters, our military is out of munitions, eating rotten food and sabotaging its own equipment, our healthcare infrastructure is a joke, our food safety is nonexistent. Even if you don't care about the brutal oppression, he's making the US weak.

Education is being actively dismantled including injection of factually wrong information, most people who are already budget stretched are being priced further out of basics or actively sabotaged of previously existing benefits, infrastructure of any kind is crumbling and astronomically expensive..

Call me crazy - go ahead - but would cutting capacity help us or Russia, China, Iran, etc? Maybe the Russia "hoax" is less a hoax and more a complete capitulation to enemies?

Knowing nothing about it that was my first thought, it would probably reduce launch capacity, and that he’s either doing it for that reason or he’s doing it because some other traitor convinced him it would be better.

This is not going to work, he tried to do this last term too, it will requier a compleat redesign of the carrier, you can not refit the carriers already compleated or the carriers under construction. This will never pass budget review and becase there is no budget in the world to cover this.

Thinks steam power is better than electromagnetic power. Thinks magnets don't work when wet. Thinks stealth airplanes are invisible to the naked eye. Thinks windmills cause cancer. Thinks coal is clean. Thinks it's ok to inject bleach. There is no one on Earth any dumber than Trump.

Silly me, I thought Congress was in charge of funding such things **through the President’s budget** which is usually prepared a year or two in advance.

And it would have to be one at a time, for years, at the expense of work needed for the Nimitz class. If you wanted to cede our Navy's hard power to our enemies, I can't think of a more elegant way to do so.

I am not upset or sad about this. In my lifetime the majority of US military excursions have not actually been to make me and other US citizens safer. Instead they have been excursions if empire. So I am not gonna be sad about dumb ass Trump decisions that actually reduce military readiness.

Okay I get that this is dumb and it’s Trump impulsivity and whim It’s less obvious to me why switching from an electromagnetic launch to boiling water and compressing steam is more load on the power plant.

Pretty much. Any new tech needs a good shakedown period, and the Ford was certified around three to four years ago (if memory serves). Plus saving space, weight, increasing flexibility and launches, fewer steam pipes…it’s a huge step up.

I use to work in reactor dept onboard the Carl Vinson years ago and I thought the same. Now they have to fit all the machinery needed for steam catapults and also make sure the reactor that wasn't designed to do so, can make enough steam for electricity, propulsion and catapults. Seems bad.

I will give Trump the benefit of the doubt here and say this is: 1. Elderly obsessive behavior with something somebody told him once. 2. Demented disinhibition resulting in him forcing his half-witted opinions into areas where previously he would have realized he lacked expertise.

This made my head explode. Is this the scorched earth phase where he just drives the country into a ditch and the Treasury into bankruptcy to pay us all back for perceived persecution? How else can the reckless, pointless spending be explained?

See he’s literally the savior of mankind because he’s on the super deep special undercover mission to turn the whole planet on to communism by leaving a vile taste in their mouths forever associated with oligarchy

Good. When considering fascists, it is important to remember that their incompetence is a blessing. WWII would have been much worse if not for the fact that most of the Nazis were bootlicking fools.

So weird. It's also interesting that the US had one of the best demographic outlooks in the developed world. Increasing childhood mortality and decreasing immigration was basically the only way to interrupt that. Indistinguishable from sabotage.

But also this kind of detail is downstream of did you get enough food for the sailors and are you having them to be at sea for an entire year without break and are you asking them to fight a war without an ounce of strategy

I honestly dont understand how the entire military supply chain could break down so quickly. Isnt the whole POINT of a professional military that these things shouldnt happen because the civilian leadership changes every 4 years? It's not like Hegseth is personally signing the checks for food!!

When the inheritor / new leader of the professional military really deep-in-his-bones thinks 'POG' is a wasteful, problem thing it's maybe not so surprising. He sees "only approximately 10% of the military actually fill combat roles" and views that as a problem. No, it's why modern mil is amazing.

Yeah, he's made it pretty clear he thinks the only job the military should have is Shoot Gun At Enemy, and everything else is woke DEI. Frankly, I'm surprised we still have an Army Corps of Engineers.

Less that it's a big upgrade we would miss out on and more that falling back to the old way with a reactor not designed for it will end up being somewhat less than standard Nimitz

In his first term, he did say that they should go back to steam for their launchers. I had brushed it off as typical Trump venting – so to speak. But as with so many of his other crazy ideas, he was dead serious. Now I’m wondering what’s next. Will he try to nuke a hurricane?
