The reality is that 2024 was a fundamental test of the moral character of the nation and we failed spectacularly. We’re living with the consequences now. Maybe we improve. I hope so.

I'll say this: in many of the places where the population is concentrated in the country (and not incidentally, most of the wealth), we could be something much better tomorrow if we chose to be and exercised our power. European-style social democracies? IDK. But much closer to that.

Trouble is, absent a rerun of the Civil War with Mecha-Sherman and a no-bullshit Reconstruction we'd have to slough off a geographically-large chunk of the country where a lot of decent people live. It'd set up a Partition situation or worse.

We are living among the worst Americans in history. Their racism and willingness to preserve it prompted them to elect a shameless criminal who has infested the entire government with lackeys trying to destroy our democracy. This is a satanic nation of evil, greed, and moral corruption.

Improve is relative at this point. The era of American hegemony on the global stage is over. If something better and more egalitarian replaces it, maybe that’s not a bad thing, but I’m not super hopeful for that in the near term.

If we are being honest, America has been struggling with its moral clarity since its founding. That’s who we are. We do some good things. We do some bad things. And the cycle goes on. I like to think we collectively learn from the things we’ve done and endeavor to continuously improve.

I’m generally an optimist, but this is over. It would take decades to fix what has been broken. And, that means, during those decades, ‘murica won’t elect another trump. Something it is so spectacularly capable of doing.

Yes, that was bad, but allowing Trump to take control was much worse for Gaza and the world. Many more people will die because of his insane plans. The destruction of USAID will kill large numbers, as well as the RFK Jr. anti-vax stupidity. Thanks for helping Trump get elected.

My hope is that this is one of the horrible events that ends up leading to a big progressive push. But WE have to help the push. It doesn't happen by itself.

The rest of us hope you do too. But as my Prime Minister made clear the rest of the world cannot and will not just stand by wait and pray for your electorate to regain their sanity.

It’s very sad, tragic, and the reason I fled the country in 2019. The United States had only a 250 year run before the Far Right killed it. Damn the Republicans. Damn MAGA. Goddamn TRUMP. I curse his name and wish I had never heard it.

Correction the evil people who jumped in that shitty diaper and the lazy losers that didn’t vote failed! We are part of the people with a brain and common sense and knew he was not worth the air he breaths clearly his family hate him if they didn’t they wouldn’t play this hell destined game!

REPUBLICANS failed spectacularly. The people who have been self-righteously moralizing to us for decades, it turns out, are perfectly okay with racism, sexism, brutality, authoritarianism, even sexual abuse of children, even brutal kidnapping of children, even sucking up to Vladimir Putin.

He won a plurality, not a majority He got 4M votes fewer than Biden in 2020 A South African billionaire bought votes illegally & gave $250M Musk also made in-kind contribution of hundreds of millions by wrecking Twitter. He ran on lies. Kamala only had 107 days He has never beat a man in a general.

or best yet - split the country! There is no future with republicans. We are NOT UNITED; never will be; never should be. Policy is NOT what separates us; morality vs republican immorality is what separates us & ALWAYS will.

It was a test of how far the decades orchastrated mass manipulation could go. Learn the rules of parpagnada to understand what is happening in the fake news. Basically: spread lies 24/7 to reduce critical thinking and then stoke fear/hate 24/7 to force people make choices with their emotions.

The US used to be one of the most moral countries in the world. I am sure that underlying morality must be there somewhere. Speak out, unite & fight. Enough opposition & he will crumble, because he is a coward - no soldiering for him. He cannot stand being unpopular. Use that & speak out!

While I agree with most of this, and a much of what you 'tweet' here, I do not agree that this mess is any Biden voter's fault. This is not the America I wish to live in. The one thing I will admit to is that I thought people were smarter, kinder. Oh boy, was I ever disappointed!

And that reality reflects the undeniable truth that the failure lies entirely with white conservative Christians. They are 💯 MAGA. 💯 of them knowingly voted for Trump and continue to support and justify what he is doing.

I haven’t seen the News really try to have the conversation we needed to have after the El Paso and Buffalo shootings. We gotta talk about bigotry and how fundamentally it shapes American culture.

Americans need to sit in the reality that violence and fascism didn’t drop on their doorstep. We were knee deep in it but most Americans weren’t the targets and supported it with money, time, advocation, and votes. We gotta sit with how the system perpetuates harm & death.

These are the consequences of allowing the Confederates to all live and continue to spread their disease. There would be no MAGA if the Confederates had been wiped out completely and their propaganda made illegal, the way Germany treated the Nazis after the fact.

Can’t rule out with 100% certainty the election wasn’t stolen. F.Elon teased like he had something to do with the outcome of the election

You will need to TAKE your country back if you want things to improve. Trump is just the orange face to a whole corrupt structure that won’t easily go away. The real problem is the super rich and the real moral failure is the glorification of profit.

Even if Dems were to take back power here, I fear they would try and concentrate all the evil that has been done onto Trump and cronies, like how our propaganda focuses on Hitler and a few of his allies and not on the general populace and lesser politicans being enablers. But your take is correct.

If the Dems somehow take back power they're give Trump a slap on the wrist, keep his major allies around in government and maybe even give one a committee or cabinet position, and then tell anyone demanding consequences that they need a big tent (and more donations) to beat the GOP next cycle.

In 10 or so years there will be a new republican mass murderer in charge while every shithead liberal and their voters say that really Trump wasn't all that bad in comparison, just like they do nowadays with Reagan and Bush.

Wish the stories weren't true. Hoping they are so they can expose the monsters. Makes me want there to be a deity to give these folks peace from life long anguish. Give them the opportunity to tell the world their stories. Protect them from the morons of the world.

Im afraid you’re observations are right. But I have good news: you guys managed to piss off also the other half of the world in just a year. Outstanding achievement!

Here’s why you will NEVER recover from this self inflicted apocalypse. 1. Vast majority of Americans either in denial of what’s happening,or support it 2. You refuse to accept what’s needed. A revolution 3. It’s too late. The world will NEVER trust you again 4. Inaction to fix this, world quits you

What failed in (here in PA) was election security. We have counties where more people voted than even live there. It was rigged, whether by Musk or local MAGA election workers or both. So no, the majority of us didn't flunk a moral character test. Those who did simply cheated to get the win.

The choice was genocide or democracy. The US - by bipartisan consensus - chose genocide. The US showed itself to be immoral. Brutalizing brown people overseas was a pretty good sign that eventually the US would brutalize brown people here. Now some find ethnic cleansing at home a little too messy.

We nominated a Black woman. In 2024 America. Did any of us *truly* expect a different result? This country is the United States of Low Gas and Egg Prices. Winning over this doltish, racist, woman-hating electorate is hard enough as it is.

We already knew that 20% have that sort of moral character, so I don’t think that was being tested. I would characterize it as a test of political engagement and intelligence. As it turned out, people were clueless enough to sit out and or pull the lever for him.

Yup. But please, continue calling yourselves the “gReAtEsT nAtIoN iN tHe WoRlD” while spouting that pathetic anthem of yours. We see America for what it truly is. We will never forget.

I remember in 2021, #LizCheney saying, How America responds to the #Jan6thInsurrection, will be the Moral Test of our Time! She was absolutely Right! The Betrayal by Trump and the Republican Party, is worse than I could have ever imagined!!!

You got that right. The *we* that failed is the group that has voted Republican continuously every election cycle since the Civil Rights Act passed.

I’m sorry but as true as that is, it is a also - at least also - that this whole f-u-c-k-I-n-g fiasco is a 1% corporate takeover and we are the launchpad for minimally a concerted attempt towards international economic domination. Corporate. 1%. We the people are collateral and insignificant.

We didn't. REPUBLICANS did. We have to make it matter to them. This will not be easy. We have to name, shame, shun and isolate REPUBLICANS who voted away the America we got to grow up in. They have to feel the pain they have caused others. They are lost in selfishness or stupidity.

Yeah, well… how much do you wanna bet Dump & his crew of fascist criminals CHEATED? Take a look at Texas alone. AG Paxton should be in prison but avoided justice after being convicted of fraud. #TrumpCheats #FightFascism #DefendDemocracy

I don't believe the current administration is representative of the moral character of your nation, at least not the American people. It is a moral failng on the part of the wealthy men who backed Trump and then kissed the ring. Still wonder what happened to the last election. It didn't add up.

Call me jaded, but I don’t want to share a nationality with trump supporters. I will never treat them as my countrymen. I will never treat them as anything but a cancerous tumor that should be cut out completely and then studied to find out how they became so malignant.

Counterpoint: no matter what you do the underlying authoritarian core will always be there and you have to learn to live with it and mitigate it. Because they will be there. Be it for MAGA, be it for Communism, be it for any other promise of prosperity and repression of the "deserving".

And a lot of those people got lambasted by their kids a decade ago and for good reason don’t get to see their grandchildren anymore. I appreciate your forgiving heart. I just don’t identify with it even remotely.

I've been thinking about that too. How do we create a genuinely civil society with people who think they have no obligation to anyone but themselves? They need their own island. I suggest Epstein's . . .

virtue-signaling-non-praxis-based-hysterics won't fix your country. you share the country with them and you can't change that. you didn't want it. the universe doesn't care. do something useful

Oh you mean like organizing in my community and system-checking my firearms and ammunition? Things like, maybe, putting a de facto neighborhood watch together and passing out whistles? Do you suppose those things would leave me time to post a few comments on Bluesky? Scold elsewhere.

Is Miller subject to being indicted for his crimes he is committing right now? He is obviously behind this movement of using violence and Ice to terrorize human beings, as fast he can. No true law enforcement, no humanity. Miller must be held accountable NOW. Get him out and trumps loses a lot

Our fatal mistake was to mistake norms for laws. Trump killed them all. The framers never anticipated such a corrupt President given free rein instead of being checked and balanced by the other branches of government.

Will all due respect, Brexit may have been a horrendous decision, but big mistakes can some times be made honestly. Having voted for Project 2025 and the rest of the depravity associated with the MAGA cult is, in my way, a significantly more profound moral error than voting for Brexit.

Brexit was fucking idiotic, especially the idea of having a general vote & allowing a simple majority to determine whether the UK left the EU. UK has never allowed a simple majority vote to determine whether Scotland or Wales remains in the UK, has it? It was an entirely unforced error.

Cameron has never been given the deserved blame for this. It was an error of epic proportions. Reading DM readers comments you would honestly think we skipped straight from Gordon Brown to Keir Starmer with nothing between. Insane.

The Brexit vote was driven by racism. Sovereignty, fishing rights etc were simply the fig leaves to cover it. So no, Brexit was not an honest mistake.

That's wrong. I know a lot of people who were taken in by the economic argument, genuinely. They do not consider themselves racist, and frankly, neither do I. It was a ridiculous mistake, and it wouldn't be voted for now and for the same reasons - not because people have lost their prejudices.

It was a giant permission slip to every twisted SOB in the USA, to do and say whatever the fuck they want. Chaos will keep them busy, while they push the real agendas.

4 years? You mean two unconnected 2 year intervals where we had a majority before white voters said "nah we want more white supremacy"? All on dems and no accountability for the people blowing it up huh? Sounds about white.

Meanwhile, Republicans had DECADES to do the right thing…instead they homeschooled their children to learn the intricacies of how government works so they could dismantle it and then drafted a game plan to further erode people’s rights AND published it knowing they’d already poisoned the well

so their followers wouldn’t believe the truth when it was presented to them. They’ve been playing the long game since Civil Rights Era and Roe v Wade. But Dems… 🙄 No my dude, it’s white supremacy. As Eugene Robinson once said, it’s a hellava drug. Did I miss anything?

I’m sorry only four years was not enough to undo two centuries of white supremacy or safeguard against white voters giving all the power to Republicans, but that’s something to talk about with your family.

Bullshit, you really have a silly shallow take here and likely slept on the Biden/Harris admin. Dems had scant power for two years & you know that. Had you wanted progress & convictions you would have supported the prosecutor lady in a full throated manner. Filibuster is still in place thankfully

I think they cheated. I think Musk, Thiel and others found a way using AI to alter the vote. I don't think Harris lost all the swing states or the popular vote

Helplessness is the mood. There have been some big protests, Minnesotans have stood nose to nose but it doesn't move the needle in DC with the GOP or the Mod/Corp Dems. The rallying cry for Dems in midterms will be "where else you going to go". The GOP sold you out, we'll do it too but gently.

Our culture has fundamentally changed. We all can feel it. Even the public figures who used to stand up to this kind of stuff, even as recently as BLM, have either joined the dark side or are silent. We are a hallow, vapid, greedy, selfish society. No one cares, money and violence rule. As a student

Of sociology, there is nothing that fascinates me more than how our culture has devolved.Yes politics, yes policy, but what I’ve noticed in family, friends, neighbors, online comms, drivers, strangers at the store, schools, is just…anger. Rudeness. Selfishness. It’s palatable. We are so deeply broken

I respectfully disagree. I have seen community coming together, calling out ice and saving people's lives in my community. People purchasing groceries for immigrants so they can stay at home. There are so many examples of kindness and humanity. And they are building.

When I look at the fighters, the few that have stood up and stood out, it feels like a small army pushing against a dam, a David and Goliath type of dynamic. We have the rich, foreign leaders, 77mil voters+, politicians, church leaders, well funded right wing groups, social media, mainstream media

Law offices, the SC, Jan 6ers, white supremacists, pardoned criminals, propagandists, law enforcement, ICE, financial institutions, allll working against us. I felt this during the campaign too. I said if Harris is able to pull this off- impressive. She couldn’t. Too many forces want the fascism.

@atrupar.com We WILL improve in incomprehensible ways if, perhaps, we can get ICE to go roust, attack, brutalize, assault, arrest, & DEPORT the 77 Million Insurrectionists (OBVIOUSLY because they're all for overthrowing The Gov't) that were stupid enough to have voted for Clementine Caligula...!!

The genocide in Gaza that most of our elected representatives still fund, support, & enable was a fundamental test of our moral character which we failed spectacularly. No suprise that we'd then elect a known criminal because we cared more about egg prices than decency. We are reaping what we sowed.

I'd suggest that 2024 was a test of Western electoral systems being able to provide candidates who actively represented their constituents, rather than a central party machine. This is a problem in the UK and US - the political system has calcified and people feel disenfranchised. 2024 is a symptom

of a system that has changed from being a calling to being a multi-generational career path, more concerned with internal power structures, funding and layers of legal cruft. When that system is under pressure to deliver change, we get special interest groups and rhetoric, not policy debate.

Doubt it. Republicans have control of all 3 branches of Gov, why are they still so angry? Republicans and Evangelicals need that festering wound of hate and dehumanization of "the other" in order to remain in power and rape the country of all its worth. There is the fundamental problem.

PLS aaron, i beg of you, & everyone, pls recognize the role of cyber propaganda! elon simply extended what RU and cambridge analytica pulled off in '16! IF most of the US was aware of this vicious scheme, & educated to thwart it, the landscape would look MUCH different! morals could prevail!

I don’t believe you’ll see any improvement until there is radical change. One side that kidnaps children to use as bait for their parents is not compatible with the side that elected President Obama. A fundamental change that redefines America needs to happen. Maga needs a separate country.

I’m on SS but gave a few thousand to’20&24 campaigns, made hundreds of calls. The people reading your excellent posts(which I always do because they’re so informative) need some ENCOURAGEMENT. 75,017,613 of us didn’t fail. You need encouragement too. I admire and respect your courageous reporting.👍🏼

POV: An 80-year old senile game show host with heavy orange makeup is ranting about Hannibal lecter and invading Europe. He says he wants to be a dicator, is physically mocking disabled ppl, and has been convicted of multiple crimes. What do you do? America: this is hard tho.

It's not that complicated. It just requires admitting that most Republicans are in it for the racism, sexism, & other isms they call "family values" or "heritage". Trump got in because Big Business wanted him to cut taxes and the white no-college base wanted him to be Bull Connor.

Trump is what one should expect to eventually see when the Republican Party, seeing how white Southerners voted against Democrats in the 1966 midterms to protest the Civil & Voting Rights Acts, decided to use their bigotries to get them to back cutting rich people's taxes as a way to hurt nonwhites.

Most USA citizens have awaken to the malicious devastation the Felon has done, is doing & will continue to do. Unfortunately, 1/3 of the USA experience an orgasm watching Felon do his damage & assist him in his evil doings. There's also the 1/3 who do nothing, in spite of damage done to them.

For those who did not bother to vote, it’s something slightly different than moral character. It’s disengagement from 2 party politics and shear ignorance (inability to read reality and its implications for 🇺🇸 future). I saw it in some young people. Though disengagement can become a moral issue.

Those are the ones that drive me crazy and I have to admit as a person who likely spends far too much time being consumed by current events, I am sick to death of the people I know who ‘aren’t into politics’. As if it’s an option🙄😡

They did vote, fool. We gave them a trifecta in 2021 and they pissed it away. Then proceeded to gaslight us and platform “the other guy will hurt you worse.” That’s an abuse tactic, not a political platform. You’re surprised it failed? Put the blame where it belongs or continue to fail.

Blaming non voters isn't going to solve anything. I'm in a very blue state. I don't like Harris and I didn't vote. If it was close in my state I would have voted for her. An issue is in the close states. A larger issue is having 2 fucking senators for Montana and Wyoming but also for CA and NY.

Then *you're* the problem. Suck it, Quisling, and shut the fuck up. You had your chance to make your opinion heard, and *you* failed We The People. Fuck straight off to your choice of "shit hole" country. The reckoning will not be kind to your ilk.

Choosing not to vote for Harris in 2024 was essentially giving Trump half a vote. It might not have turned the election with the electoral college in place, but it did give Trump a majority of votes (unlike in 2016) and a justification for his supposed "mandate." Also, why the dislike for Harris?

The non-voter's excuse will always be regarding Gaza, as if it's the only place facing devastation. I don't know if I believe that is their actual reason but that's what they all keep saying.

Something about "kAmAlA wIlL bE wOrSe" and still complaining she is even while Trump sends his Gestapo after them and they still won't admit they were wrong. They were not serious and shouldn't be taken as such. Not until they admit their error accept responsibility for their non-action.

Yeah, and I don't get the Independent voters holding out for some imagined dream candidate that ticks all their boxes. Voters had a choice between a racist rapist and felon - and a mixed-race woman. Independents couldn't decide who to give their vote to.

Of the 36% who didn’t vote, I’m mostly pissed at the ones who’ve since become online armchair candidates. The narrative that this is all the fault of Democratic candidates at least *trying* to do the work has got to go. Anyone who didn’t use their voice to vote needs to shut the fuck up.

Can't like this enough. What's worse is that lazy apathetic motherfuckers now claim that the suffering we're going through is MY punishment for apparently not caring enough about Gazaaaaaaa wahwahwaaahhhhh. Absolute fucked up finger-pointing trying to avoid accountability at all costs. Fuck them.

The data says that white liberal men stayed home. You can decide what that says about US society for yourself, but leftists don’t have enough bodies here to cause you anything more than a mild headache online and you’re coping if you think otherwise.

It is the Dems fault. Biden said his support for Israel is " ironclad." Then at the DNC Harris says she will make sure that America has the "most powerful and lethal military in the world." Then Harris silences American Palestinians. The Dems threw us all under the bus.

They silenced and shut out the Palestinian perspective at the DNC convention. I found it disappointing... we're supposed to be better than that.

We can all agree that genocide is horrible and evil. That said, Gaza isn’t the only example of it and to make that single issue the deciding factor in choosing not to vote in 2024 is/was self-defeating (on principle..not saying that’s necessarily you).

There’s the argument that the dems need to feel actual consequences for their role as token resistance to conservative policies they still end up supporting, but that was under the assumption that trump 2 would be trump 1 again, and not this shit

That's the big problem. Most Trump supporters don't believe this happened, and if it did happen it was antifa. We don't live in the same reality and AI is making it so much worse.

why? do we count non voters and just give their votes to your candidate? that's not constitutional. do we force them to vote? that violates your own equal protection clause. did you even pass high school, Rob? You have no clue why your country is now run by an idiot. hint: your party's fault
