Alito: "We have lots of phrases that involve 2 words, second of which is 'day.' Labor Day, George Washington's birthday, Election Day. They're all particular days. So if I have nothing more to look at than the phrase 'Election Day,' I think this is the day in which everything is going to take place"

Weirdly enough, I was in Boston last week and attended the St. Patrick's Day parade on Sunday March 15th...so if I can get drunk and puke Green Beer 2 days before the official date celebration, we can have some fucking leeway on the casting and counting of votes on election day...

"Corruption day, everyday"..... right Alito? This applies to you?..... What an ass and should be NOWHERE near law, not even dusting off the law books.... 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

There's still choice in the world. God won't smite us if we just decide to make an "Election Week" or even "Election Month." Alito's analysis is (the first four letters of the same).

On the plus side, I look forward to Christmas being restricted to just 'Christmas Day' When the clock strikes 11:59pm on the 25th, you better be ready to take down those ornaments, toss the tree, turn off the lights and caroles, etc... bc when it hits midnight, it's done. Over. Gone.

Saying "I would celebrate the death of <PERSON>" is faaaaaaaaar different than were I to have said either "I am going to kill <PERSON>" (threat) or "someone should kill <PERSON>" (incitement).

There is neither threat nor incitement in my statement. It's a simple declaration of how I would observe the establishment of a holiday around an event that would have been established by an act of Congress.

Folks.. plan on voting in person on Election Day this time around. I know it can be a hassle. Don’t give them any reason to toss your vote. Fuck these ppl. Shortly after that we’ll celebrate judgement day.

Does he refuse any birthday presents not received on his actual birthday? Or decline to participate in any Labor Day Sales Events that occur on the in the week before and week after Actual Calendar Labor Day? And as we know, no town has ever held their July 4th fireworks on 7/3 or 7/5…

Alito's entire argument seems to be because Election Day could all happened in one day back in 1814/1872, that access to poles is the same 144 years later? That seems like a pretty idiotic conclusion. Voting takes longer to occur and to count, thus voters need a relief mechanism.

7M or 39 m population(1814/1872) vs. 331M (2020). That's nearly an 1-2 magnitudes in difference. You can't treat two different centuries voting as the similarly viable and equitable.

Also, it’s called Election Day, not Voting Day, if he really wants to have a pedantic argument over it. There can be days of voting leading up to it.

Expanding the Supreme Court is just a band aid on the gaping chest wound that is the US Constitution and the legal community that earns its living off of it. Should have been replaced many decades ago. We'll go down with it as it is now a quasi religious document.

Election Day is not necessarily voting day. I forget, it doesn’t need to make sense. It’s all about assuring the autocratic GOP regime remains in power by any means necessary. Alito is a pathetic joke as a Justice. As are all the FS Justices. This is criminal.

"George Washington's birthday" is neither two words, nor ends in " day". (OK, birthday ends in day, but in that case it's part of a compound word.) Alito is smart enough to know that words mean whatever we decide they mean, and meanings change based on usage. His argument is in bad faith here.

Thank god we only ever talk about or celebrate George Washington on that one single day. Every other day? Who is that. Just one single day to remember him. I mean you would think thats a weird way to think, but not for Alito! - it also explains many of his rulings.

True, as ANY system that lasts long enough can be gamed, but you can make it significantly more difficult for a rogue element to take over by explicitly defining the powers of each branch of government and especially defining the powers of the executive and placing limits on his/her power.p

Alito is always all in to steer them towards authoritarianism. He's controlled the court since RBG passed away. Roberts is just a figurehead.

This is a statement from a supreme court justice. Wow. He does not seem to know the difference between a public holiday and Election Day. And does he think voting and counting the votes in the 1800’s only took a day? Who took the bar exam for him?

Does this mean he wants everyone to line up on election day to vote (something that we do not have the infrastucture for) or thaat he wants all votes cast by election day, or that he will not count votes that are made by election day if they arrive by mail the day after election day? (rhetorical ?)

There's a ton of people (of all political persuasions) who believe that nobody has to go to work or care for dependents on a holiday, so they insist ending early/absentee voting and having everyone vote in person on one specific federal holiday would increase turnout.

Imagine that, Labor Day, Presidents Day, Independence Day, Christmas Day, Memorial Day are all federal holiday’s where majority of union worker get off work. So since it’s not, does that invalidate Alito’s desperate stretch to premeditate Trump’s emergency exception?

There is also a chain of custody used for receiving and transporting ballots by polling stations and USPS. So, as long as ballots are received the day of and prior to Election Day, how is that not still maintaining custody? Am I missing Alito’s point here?

Massive bs. Ppl plan, prepare & engage in activities for Labor day, GW Bday and elections BEFORE the 'day of celebration'. Have been for eons. The "DAY" simply means its celebrated or culminated on that day, hence the person running becomes 'ELECTED" on election day. This is not rocket science

Very few people labor on Labor Day. It’s a planned day off. George Washington’s Birthday does take place on his birth day most of the time. What a huge stretch by a hack of a judge. No wonder citizens lack faith in the Supreme Court.

Of course he would say that…….that is why he is a fundamentalist……….black/white…….he is speaking to all of the simple minded folks who play the zero sum game

Alito is an idiot, how about we call it" elections" period. By Alito's definition there would be no early voting, mail in ballots or anything else! Screw those who can't make it to the poles on and only on election day!

Mr. Alito, when do you put your Christmas tree up? When do you take it down? If those events don't occur within hours of Christmas Day, then your election day argument is complete bullshit.

Aledo is a traitor. All the other "Days" that he is mentioning are constructs just like 'Election Day" is a construct. The Constitution mentions the "time and manner" of elections but doesn't use the phrase "Election Day". What a corrupt bastard.

Rs dont need to make sane arguments. Thats why Ds should have expanded/limited the court when they had a trifecta. Rs have a trifecta and they are pushing through every unpopular item they could think of...and more! When Ds have a trifecta, they squander it with excuses and no pressure on members.

Are they talking about dates or trying to reverse the 1914 laws? WTF is happening? The 17th Amendment: mandated that Senators be elected by the people of each state. Before State legislators picked senators. Women’s Suffrage at the State Level: Federal Corrupt Practices Act:

Early voting & vote-by-mail address deficiencies in voting infrastructure, such as: not enough precincts and/or voting equipment to adequately cover the voting population. Without these measures, voters *would* walk away rather than exercise their franchise. But you already know that, Justice Alito.

They’re not making an argument if the law is adversely affecting the American voter…… just that they don’t like it because it helps Democrats and hurts Republicans. Only because their standard bearer said it’s bad. If this is overturned it will hurt more Republicans than Democrats.

Democrats have the ability to vote in person more than Republicans, who are mostly older Americans. Plus many Red States depend on mail in voting. Trump continues to submarine his own party, because he’s crazy. And they’re too afraid to push back against him.

“So if I have nothing more to look at than the phrase ‘Independence Day,’ I assume that is the day when America dumped tea, fired on the British, crossed at Valley Forge, wrote & signed the Declaration of Independence,” said the Originalist Justice. Oh, if I had nothing more than the word Justice…

If voting happening exclusively on one single day is so important why isn't Election Day a federal holiday? 100's of millions of people need to vote all on a single day. Schools are closed so parents already need to deal with that. And why are states reducing polling places & hours?

Seriously?!?! Come on!! This is supposed to be some deep thinker? We certainly don’t all have to agree, but at least give me something. George Washington birthDAY? Get the fuck outta here

So if the ballots are not counted due to the polls closing a 8 pm and the end of "Election Day" is 11:59 pm, all Election activities stop. That means that any ballots not counted by the are null and void according to Alito's logic. No early voting, no mail in ballots.

What else has two words: mail service Guess what Alito, many parts of the country don’t have reliable mail SERVICE, especially over the past 10 yrs since Louis DeJoy was appointed Postmaster General, so letters can take over 10 days to arrive.
