Rep. James Clyburn says he supports expanding the Supreme Court: "13 is a pretty good number. A baker's dozen would be a good number to have on the Court."

And in your system of "separation" of powers, it's bonkers that the president gets to nominate judges. For the whole federal judiciary.

We can have 20 supreme court justices, but without sc reform, it is pointless. The so-called supreme court is a rogue court issuing unconstitutional "rulings"... Their legitimacy is trash and they are now defunct by their own doing.

13 matches federal circuit courts. We have 3 times citizens as we had when 9 was "official" number of justices. We've changed numbers over 250 years. It's time. We can flex number from 10-13 to allow for official recruiting, illness or death; add term limits; set clear rules & consequences.

Well better replace some Dem Legislators or they will piss that opportunity away when it happens- if, despite their kicking many cans down the road- we can get to that opportunity. Because right now- it would be 4 more sheet wearing heritage goons

First, address the root cause of the issue Elect 2 Senators from each Court District, they are the Judicial Oversight Committee and produce a list of SC Justice candidates President selects nominees from that list Impeach corrupt SCJs Then expand to 13 Each year, the most senior SCJ must retire

13 Justices honestly makes sense! The reason there are currently 9 is the last time the size of the Court was set, there were only 9 Federal Circuits. Today there are 13.

STOP FUCKING TALKING ABOUT THIS WHILE TRUMP IS PRESIDENT!!! If that jackass realizes that HE can expand the Court, he’ll add FOUR MORE Trump-ass-kissing 30-year-olds! Wait until that fucker is GONE, or it will become WORSE than it is NOW!!!

My concern is Trump will expand it first and stock with 4 more MAGA servants. If Republicans hold the Senate, it wouldn’t surprise me if they ditched the filibuster to push this through next year.

Biden did some good things during his 4-year term, but he also missed some opportunities. 2021–2023 Democrats held the White House and majorities in both the House and the Senate. 2023–2025 Republicans won control of the House in the midterms, while Democrats kept control of the Senate.

No need to expand the court. The racist white demographics particularly in the former confederate south will collapse this year. Maga is right anything that doesn't adapt get replaced. Follow the numbers. There's no economic or political solutions just like in Apartheid South Africa

The point is there’s 13 circuits. There used to be 9, then 10 and then they said “hold on, this looks like everyone will have representation on the Supreme Court, especially for appeals, surely that would be unconstitutional! So, let’s just pretend we can’t count for at least 150 years.”

When the Honorable Representative James Clyburn speaks, People listen... WE CHEER: "MORE ON THE COURT! MORE ON THE COURT! MORE ON THE COURT!"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the # of Supreme Court justices was tied to the # of federal appeals courts. There used to be 9. Now there are 13. Expanding to 13 makes perfect sense.

pretty sure every non-magat supports the expansion of SCOTUS. it's pretty obvious that it is broken in its current form. clear them out and start fresh with actual, enforceable limitations in place.

Sigh. USA will never fix it's problems until they recognise the actual problem. It is not the number of presiding judges that is the issue. It is the lack of checks and balances to ensure that the judges remain apolitical and have no conflicts of interest or integrity issues.

Not super familiar with Clyburn, but I must say what I remember about him the most is that he picks his moments. Pretty shrewd in this case

but there's also the need to do more than kick the can down the road--to arrive at a new settlement that redefines the court's power relative to the other branches here i think briley's "jury of circuit court judges" proposal is pretty good www.liberalcurrents.com/break-up-the...

Pointless, unless Clyburn thinks that the GOP will never hold a majority again. The problem isn't the number - it's the partisan political process that determines what political color the appointee is ... and the difficulty inherent in replacing them.

1 per Federal District that would be 13, but make it 9 justice rotation on hearing cases. One more thing Justices must be nominated from a panel of independent judges, the president can pick from that panel. No politicians involved! Also that panel can have a justice removed for crimes

Why just 13? Add all 179 circuit judges to 9 current SCOTUS members all with lifetime tenure. Pick & recuse 13 *random* judges from nationwide pool for each appeals court case. Those *random* 13 judges = SCOTUS *for that case* if it goes that far. No amendment needed. bsky.app/profile/atru...

TERM LIMITS TERM LIMITS TERM LIMITS TERM LIMITS TERM LIMITS TERM LIMITS TERM LIMITS We don't need 80yr old geriatric lifelong politicians.

The Constitution does not give life terms per Article III Section 1: "The Judges, both of the supreme and inferior Courts, shall hold their Offices during good Behaviour,..." A strong ethics rules needed and a method for enforcing those rules, and removing Justices that do not abide by them..

13 makes lot sense.. why? 13 Federal COURTS.. thus your NUMBER should MATCH the NUMBER of FEDERAL COURTS.. vs. this RANDOM BULLSHIT.. TERM LIMITS and ETHICS.. and my big ONE.. APT via FEDERAL COURTS.. I judge per.. by peers for TEN YEARS!! WHY? you get JUDGES not hacks from SENATE

13 is a terrible number. It would barely put the liberals in charge with a 7 to 6 majority. Lose one liberal on a big case, or have a future Republican president appoint a conservative, and we are back where we are today.

As long as supreme & fed court judges are appointed by political parties, there will be no free & fair justice. You could put 50 judges in the SC & it will still be bent. It needs disbanded & a totally independent & non political system of judicial appts & oversight implemented.

He also said he erred in voting for the nomination of Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. “He has gone from an angry leftist [in college] to a very angry rightist.” Seems like he voted for the color of his skin instead of the content of his character.

The number of justices on #SCOUTS is *supposed* to be the same as the number of district courts. We have 13 district courts so there should be 13 justices. The Court was never expanded because Americans are stupidly superstitious about the #13

I'm glad the mainstream consensus is finally arriving at the necessity of this, but the actual number needs to be at least 15. There are six saboteurs on the Supreme Court whose votes need to be made irrelevant if we are unable to remove them from the bench altogether.

Great. Add to the corruption. This is one of the dumbest things I’ve heard. You need to fix what’s there before you add to it! Just when I think the stupidity can’t reach any higher, it finds a new level.

13 is an unlucky hotel floor number. Proponents of a 13-justice court would also be accused of witchcraft or Satanism, etc. Don't mess around with 13. This is not a joke. 15 is the right number for real court reform.

The need to expand the court is SCOTUS's own fault. They have been signalling for a while now that they are overworked. Between 'major questions doctrine' and the shadow docket, 9 justices is obviously not enough. Expand the court, add new districts, shrink some districts, and blame SCOTUS.

This right here reminds me of; “You can always count on the Americans to do the the right thing after they have exhausted every other possibility.” paraphrasing Winston Churchill Better late than never…I guess

Term Limits are also necessary. Lifetime appointments made more sense when the average median lifespan was 60 and communication was slower. Now-a-days, not so much. As much as I respect her legacy, RBG's dogged insistence to be replaced by Hillary fucked us. She had fucking CANCER.

I just had a cold sweat thinking about Republicans trying to defuse Democrats who want more Justices on SCOTUS by taking up the call themselves, claiming bipartisanship, then giving Trump 4 more puppets so everything is a 10-3 decision instead of a 6-3 decision.

Absolutely. Someone who was in line with the public views of the time in 1976 will not be in line with the views of 2026. Additionally, RBG died of cancer in office. We’ve had Justices with dementia. We have Justices who know how impossible it is to remove them and become corrupt. We need limits.

Clarence Thomas is an anomaly on the court. He isn't the texturalist he claims to be. He holds the words of the Constitution hostage to his interpretation.WWCD what would Clarence do if a case on interracial marriage came before him? Treat it as same sex marriage which he is against. 🤔 Humm.

There should be one SCOTUS justice for each circuit. And there need to be many more circuits, as some of the circuits are far too large for one justice to handle. Circuits should be thought of in the same manner as house reps - by population. Btwn 19 & 23 seems abt right w/ en Banc review possible.

You should NOT be suggesting this until Ds have more control. This is a dangerous time to suggest this. Very dangerous! We are now 6 and 3. What do you think it will be like at 10 to 3?

Not really. The current administration could already do this right now if they wanted to, but they've already pushed the political narrative that Dems are the ones that want to "pack the court". They already have a strong majority and nothing to gain.

Nah, it should be reduced to one. Just one justice. Still appointed for life, too. One to match the same power of a unitary president. Imagine just how much faster court decisions would take, no dissenting opinions to write (as if this opinion matters anyway).

So, basically, there would be a chance for republicons to steal more seats. How about instead of giving the corrupt right wing government the ability to appoint judges we give that power to the people to vote them in and give those judges term limits. Stacking the deck isn’t going to help.

Supreme court justices should not be picked by a president and confirmed by 100 senators. The republicans have shown us that the system we use now makes it possible to corrupt the court with unqualified idiots, the SCOTUS 6, There has to be a better way!
