I was at an opticians yesterday and they were selling the Ray-Ban Pervert Glasses. I'd never gotten a close look before. They are virtually visually indistinguishable from any other pair of sunglasses unless you REALLY know what to look for. Ban them immediately, what the fuck?

I can’t believe that people want the ability to record everything they encounter on a daily basis. It was recently reported that Michael Barrymore has been using something similar to ‘create content’ during day to day encounters with unsuspecting retail staff.

I keep thinking this whenever I see that places are banning them. Would your average doctor's receptionist recognise these for what they are, would anyone not in tech or very online realise?

yeah I actually tossed my rayban glasses bc of them lol don't want people to think I'd wear that shit 💀

I challenged an optician saying they are creepy & privacy risk. He said because there is a flashing light it’s “ok” - the light was tiny & not visible unless up close I have a visually impaired friend who says they are empowering but I am concerned they can (and will) be misused

Are these not the glasses that remove clothing though? A flashing light isn’t going to prevent anyone from taking an image of anyone and uploading it. 🤷🏼‍♂️ They need to be banned because they are crazy!

The great thing for someone who has substantially lost vision is that the action of wearing glasses and looking at things is already a familiar habit. A low-vision wearer can hold a book or menu in the normal fashion and have the glasses read text into their ear.

I wear a pair of ltd edition Ray-Ban Clubmaster prescription glasses with photochromic lenses. They are prominent frames & often paired with in-ear headphones that have a 'click to skip' button. Naturally I'm going to be accused at some point but I also don't want to ditch v.expensive specs.

ALL of the wearers are perverts and those sales records only have to be leaked once and we have a list of people to avoid/shame. The very people stripping our privacy away are creating a list that will one day reveal them for the perverts they are. In the creepchipper with all of them

Just checked my opticians (Vision Express) and confirmed they do sell these. Feels like this issue is ripe for some active campaigning against firms who market these. Cut off the market and the manufacturers will maybe get the message? I’ve no idea how this would be achieved BTW!

Costco sells them. When I pointed them out the sales clerk looked embarrassed and changed the subject. Next time I go in I expect them to be covered in dust.

They are a miracle for people with low vision. My relative couldn't take a photo/video with them if her life depended on it, but the glasses read her menus, product packaging, etc. accurately and discreetly -- restoring independence and enabling her to fit in with others. So what's the solution? 1/2

Have the disabled wear glasses with special markings? Attack everyone wearing them, the disabled be damned? Drive them off the market? None of these are good choices. I don't know the solution, but I hope the benefits of this tech can be preserved.

Here’s the thing: You have to take a step back from the moral aspect of these devices. That’s a trap. The issue is the economic: These glasses are data harvesting on an economic scale unheard of since the last time Facebook launched. This is Zucks next data monopoly grab

We know what damage Zucks monopoly on social media did. We know that it hurt politics & the very fabric of some peoples reality. What do you think will happen when that same person owns the data of what you see & experience?

I think the Metaverse didn’t fail - it got shelved for now whilst Zuck worked a way out of harvesting better quality data for it. He can recreate the real world & merchandise it all off the back of rubes buying his expensive glasses.

Privacy laws were never going to work once people had a digital video recorder that could broadcast live to the world for basically free. But the tech firms knew this. They hacked society to convince people it was what they wanted

The issue is not just the video recording but also that the data stream goes via servers that can scan everything with face recognition, site recognition and there enable a deep tracking system and full data on Meta servers.

Visually impaired people do not need these things to be able to record, store or upload photos and videos. Enhancement and analysis in real time is the benefit there. They are also very clearly not the target market for this product, or the vast majority of its competitors.

"Perverts could find other ways to take bad photos." Yes, and instead of a gun I could kill my neighbour with an elaborate Wile E. Coyote style trap involving a trip wire, a Rube Goldberg machine and a falling anvil but most countries still ban guns because there's a benefit to raising difficulty.

Fun fact though, that light is not legally mandated as far as I can tell. Meta put it in because everyone was screaming at them, but their competitors are under no obligation to have one in a lot of jurisdictions. about.fb.com/news/2026/07...

Same as the legally required camera shutter sound in Japan when taking a photo. Personally I think they should be given to women for free to record 'not all men', but some. Would soon see them banned.

My mother in law who is almost completely blind has just invested in a pair of meta glasses. They will help her retain her independence allowing her to read cooking information on packaging, best before dates etc.

At this point anyone who purchases ray-ban anything is complicit. That branding is enough. Those that are wearing ray-bans that aren't smart are allowing the smart ones to go unnoticed.

I’m starting to think I need another eye test soon. Looked at booking one at vision express. These are two of the options 🤔

I think the more women go and loudly proclaim to the whole shop they want a pair so's they can see the size of men's dicks for a laugh, the quicker they'll be withdrawn...I mean, men are SO sensitive...c'mon ladies, do your thing.

Not sure this is a great marketing idea by Ray-Ban. Cool brand, now associated with perverts. Will people think “oh l like Ray-Bans but I’m not buying a pair because people will think I’m a nonce”. Who wants a product that may cause people to confront/ threaten you?

Very glad that I happened to replace my old bans that broke with Maui Jims. They weren't remotely the same style, but the name is gross now.

The thing is,you can tell the difference between the traditional raybans and the meta ones. Most people arent hyper brand aware So what's actually going to happen is the wayfarer style(or thick rim glasses in general) will now be associated with perverts. Dark times ahead for the vision impaired.

I don't think there's anything wrong with camera glasses. Claiming anyone with a subtle camera is a pervert is a logical fallacy. Technological augmentation is the future. However, it should definitely not be made by an evil spyware company run by a subhuman parasite like meta.

What if all the undocumented immigrants, civil rights observers, protesters, wore the meta glasses? Wouldn’t they be capturing video just like a police body camera? There may be a benign use for these things. 💡

Lots of benign uses of them. Just as you can easily have a discrete camera on your clothing We are moving into mass surveillance... govts have been doing it for ages and now individuals can do it Not sure it's a good thing, but banning glasses prob just means other personal recording devices

My daughter tried them yesterday, among other things being sold to her as a good option for keeping girls safe. She was massively unimpressed and came to the same conclusion. Also not impressed with translating everything within earshot if you are in a foreign country. All so questionable

instead of focusing on making actually useful AR or medical glasses they went straight to making pervert glasses. it really speaks volumes about modern tech companies.

General consumer is the volume market so you obviously start there, but they could have simply have disabled video recording and facial recognition. The problem is for gen pop what use cases exist beyond perving and harassment?

one thing that comes to mind: glasses that show directions in real-time or a map so you dont have to look in your phone every time. maybe some medical conditions that can be tracked with glasses/stuff on your head. would have been interesting to have this as an addon for prescription glasses.

Yes, there are disability use cases and the original AR concepts, plus no doubt cool Pokémon type stuff and weird live action roleplay. But would they sell it, or does viability depend on enabling pervs.

maybe a bit like the apple watch but with glasses. still, if this is still infeasible/not possible, then they always have the option to not make pervert glasses.

They are still supposed to have the LED for continuous filming from what i know, but instructions on how to bypass the LED are supposedly readily available. Then there's the facial recognition AI system that takes images every few seconds without the LED, if memory serves.
